DURHAM — Duke guard Elliott Williams made a freshman mistake in the first half in the win over Rhode Island on Sunday but it's something everyone should keep an eye on. It was small but it's important that he fix it if he wants to contribute this season.
With about 8 minutes left the first half, Duke trailed 24-14 and was trying to right itself with some pressure defense on the Rams. The player Williams was guarding got caught with his back to the basket at the top of the key and picked up his dribble.
Instead of smothering him right away to force the issue and a possible turnover, Williams hesitated before he attacked to try to get that ball. Williams can't hesitate next time. The Blue Devils will need the athletic spark Williams can provide on defense but Williams can't think about being the aggressor in that situation; he just needs to be the aggressor.
