We made a throw-away joke about Macky in last year's Selection Sunday bracket and he promptly fired off a heartfelt e-mail telling us how much he has changed since the infamous 1998 Final Four, so at the risk of further communication from Dean Smith's biggest (only?) mistake, we'll let you fill in the blanks.

Personally, I didn't give Duke a second thought after their predictable dismantling at the hands of Villanova; generally only teams that are occasionally able to reach the regional finals have relevance to me in March/April.

He made a wise career move coaching the Olympic team because he must have known his 2009 squad of Blue Dabbles would not get him onto the NCAA's gold medal podium. But then again, at Dook the main focus seems to be about K more than the team itself. I guess the challenges of running a top-tier program and being Top Assistant to Duke's President are just too much.
The momentum and mystique of Dook basketball are at low tide. UNC now has 4 consecutive wins at Cameron and 2 national titles since Dook got their last one. It is great to see Vince Carter, Jamison and Peppers having a big laugh at Dook's expense. And who is K's biggest recruiting disappointment...Paulus at point or his recent biggies (Randolph or McRoberts)?

Speaking of laughers, you should have been in the Dean Dome when Vince Carter soared over Duke's biggie at that time (Elton Brand, as I recall) for a thunderous monster dunk. The Smith Center rocked with deafening noise that glorious night, as Coach K stung the air profanely and later stomped of the court scowling in total defeat. It was another wonderful night as UNC defeated the Dookies by a margin similar to the stomping that the Heels just delivered to MSU. Even a Spartan will suffer under that kind of oppressive dominance.
