UNC is not perfect

The Tar Heels are still the best team in the ACC and the country, they're just not perfect.

Free throws, of all things, doomed UNC in the ACC opener. That and a very, un-Dean/Roy-like comeback strategy that relied on 3-pointers instead of 2s.

UNC was flinging 3s from 5 minutes in as if the ball was on fire — way too rushed and way too soon in the game.

BC gave the Heels every opportunity in the final minutes of the game to escape with a win but 15 of 27 from the free-throw line just doesn't get it done. Those are free points, hence the name.

That's not to discredit BC's effort. The Eagles won the game and it wasn't a "Tyrese Rice is unconscious" Game. The Eagles made just 9-of-24 from 3 but made the most of their 14 offensive rebounds and forced Ty Lawson into a "bad" Ty Lawson game from the second half of last season.

With quick guards, to keep up with Lawson, and bigger bodies to bother him in the lane, BC kept Lawson even in the assist-to-turnover department (four each) and forced him to go 3-of-13 from the field.

Look back at UNC's losses the last three years and it's a sure bet you'll find a subpar shooting effort from Lawson — who is/was either trying to do too much or missing too many shots.

You'll note Tyler Hansbrough scored 21 points. He's the given. It's the others — five points from Deon Thompson, a 3-of-10 shooting night from Danny Green — that will decide UNC's championship fate.

Duke can win without the 3-pointer

Kyle Singler and Gerald Henderson are giving Duke's offense a diversity it lacked by the end of last season — when DeMarcus Nelson decided to stop taking the ball to the basket — and earlier this season when Henderson was struggling to find his points.

With the "forwards" — and using quotations there because Henderson guards the 3 or 4 but is essentially a shooting guard on offense — moving the ball from the high post and taking the ball to the basket, Duke isn't completely reliant on the 3-point shoot. That's a good thing.

The Devils made six 3s against Virginia Tech, but five came in the first half. After VT made it a four-point game in the second half, Duke actually went inside on the next two possessions and pulled away with the benefit of only one 3.

Duke's defense wasn't bad on Sunday either, which is particularly encouraging because VT generates its points from the perimeter — Duke's Waterloo the past two NCAA Tournaments — but Malcolm Delaney (12 points) and A.D. Vassallo (seven) were held in check by Duke's defense.

N.C. State is getting better

The Wolfpack didn't start ACC play but stepped up a level from Loyola and Towson with a road trip to Florida. Like the Davidson and Marquette games before, State actually controlled the play but couldn't win the game in the final minutes.

Being competitive is the first step back for this program, which lost nine straight games to close last season.

They're in position to win, now they have to win the games. A little better bench coaching wouldn't hurt.

Sidney Lowe spent his professional life in the NBA, where a timeout after a made basket gives you the ball just past halfcourt on the inbounds.

In college, it gives you the ball under the basket, 94 feet from your basket. Lowe's decision to call a timeout with 11.3 seconds left after Nick Calathes put the Gators up 68-66, allowed Florida to set up their press.

It wasn't the reason State lost — help-defense anyone? — but it's a coaching adjustment, three years into his college transition, Lowe should have already made.

In the big picture, Farnold Degand's season-high in minutes (31) and Brandon Costner's ability to carry the offense (again) are signs that there are ACC games to be won for the Wolfpack.

The nonconference resume (0-3 in their notable games) is not there for an NCAA bid, but with enough ACC wins (seven to avoid Wake Forest's fate from last March) the Wolfpack can get valuable postseason experience (and extra practices) in the NIT.

Attention Readers

Ah, Gatorboy quite possibly the worst poster on this board. To quote a movie, “do you like apples? Well how’d you like them apples?' Ever notice how gatorboy is the first to comment on all articles on the blog about Duke? Inferiority complex anyone? And he always spells Duke as DUIke. That’s rich as Carolina athletics has a rap sheet much longer than Duke’s. Phil Ford knows about those three letters very well. And as always he’s got an excuse for everything. So Carolina of him. Besides Gators? Oh you probably like the Florida Gators in football, Carolina in basketball…how bout the Yankees in MLB and perhaps the Cowboys in NFL? Don’t worry you can go to one store and get all your apparel, Wal-Mart. That’s it, had to get that off my chest, as I know many of you readers feel the same way. Cheers!

P.S. Duke’s 1999 team ACC record of 16-0 remains intact. BTW that team would wipe the floor with this Heels team. Tyler meet Mr. Brand. Hopefully, both teams will share in the same fate.

I appreciate the fact ...

... you took time out of your day (and wasted an email addy) to make an acct here at the News and Observer on behalf of me!!

theres about one of you every 2 weeks.  just building a fan club is all!!  I love it!!

I guess it doesnt matter that I said UNC wasn't perfect huh!?

anyway, gvillegatr doesnt stand for Florida Gaytors.  it stands for Greenville Gators.  name has stuck for more than 10 years now.  an old fantasy football name of mine.

if you dont like the truth, go somewhere else b/c thats what I dole out ... THE TRUTH!

HAVE A GOOD DAY!~

I'm jealous

Must be nice to have your own fan club!

lol

be a smartass and tell the truth while you're at it and you, too, can have a fan club that sits and waits by their cpu's ready to sign up again and again here at the N&O with a moniker thats funnier than the last!!

If you are not aware...

If you are not aware... Wal-Mart sells NC State and Duke also. What you said makes no sense. good try though..

next..

State getting better?

It's so funny to watch NCSU fans during basketball season. They know their team is terrible so the best they can hope for is for UNC to lose. It's absolutely pathetic.

Talk about pathetic

You've got the best team in the country (still) and you're watching State fans and calling them pathetic? Look in the mirror.

Tarheel , you are NOT

Tarheel , you are NOT invincible as you thought. NCSU never claim to be on cloud-9. It's about time you Tarheel fans get off cloud-9.

LOL

The only thing we learned this weekend is UNC is not perfect.  The other two is a load of crap.

How is NCSU getting better??  Against a better team, they lost another game they had won.  thats not getting better.  getting better is winning those games against the Floridas and the Davidsons.  still in the mud form my position.

DUIke playing well against VT at home doesnt prove they are better from inside.  This VT team continues to prove they are not as good as they were last year.  Everyone thought VT would be better, but they are not.  go look at their schedule again.

Crap?

Come on, Gatr, you are better than that.

Duke won an ACC game without the 3-pointer, that's not crap it's a fact. Look at the box score.

And State is better. Did you see the Miami game in the ACC Tourney last year?

No one is saying State's ready to set the world on fire, just that they are playing better. Again, that's not crap.

It's like all the progress we made in football season is gone, Gatr.

hhhmmm

well, I guess it was a pretty good honeymoon!?  I think you are just wanting this to be true more than it is actually true.

Who has DUIke played that deems them worthy of their new "inside" role??  lets see what their inside game does against Clemson, UNC or WFU before we go praising.

and NCSU, when given the oppurtunity to beat a better team, has not.  furthermore, they have choked those games.

Who'd a thought we'd a had a falling out when I agreed with you UNC was not perfect anymore ... lol.

You can tell...

that B-ball season is heating up.

Football season is great, but there is nothing like ACC basketball to stoke the fires!
