What a difference a coach makes

Bookmark and Share

Monday's photo-op at The White House made me think of a different UNC press conference, one more important to the health of the program but not quite as formal.

Matt Doherty's "resignation" in April 2003:

Six years  ... and two national titles later:

IIRC, Doherty was awarded

IIRC, Doherty was awarded National Coach of the year ala Guthridge. Even our supposed worst coaches were better than some others around here.

Just the Facts

SoPinesHeel-

Point of correction...UNC stands tall at the very front of the line. Carolina does not take a back seat to Michigan, Florida, Stanford, or UCLA...not in football or any other category. According to James Howell's database for all-time college football records, here are the facts about UNC versus these teams in football...

Florida (the Heels have won 7, lost 2 and tied 1)

Michigan (UNC has won 2 and lost 1)

Stanford (Carolina has won 1 and lost 1)

UCLA (never played)

Overall, against these opponents, Carolina has won 10 of the 15 games played, lost 4 and tied 1. Who would not be extremely proud of that record?

More importantly, look at the whole Carolina package (not just the confines of Kenan Football). That picture is simply one of the best out there.

Yipee!!!!

As I read this, I pictured Heelsnoone smiling ear to ear and shouting "YIPPEEE" at least 8 times.  What an inspirational post!

My favorite lines were: "stands tall", "very front of the line", "extremely proud", and "best out there" (simply of course)!

 Just so uplifting!  Yay!!

Good

Wolfpackcaniac,

Great...delighted to know you have been uplifted!

YIPPEE must be a popular cheer for State fans...never use the term myself.

Yeah 1998...its me. Now, as

Yeah 1998...its me. Now, as the rare football first Tar Heel fan, if we can just get the football team standing up there with Obama one of these years wearing suits, UNC would take its place above the Michigans, Floridas, Stanfords and UCLAs of the world.

yeah, Ol Roy won 2 NCAA

yeah, Ol Roy won 2 NCAA championships but he at least gave credit to Matt Doherty, in the N&O, for the 1st one. Matt recruited those kids.

That was the point

First photo- underachieving bunch in serious need of a size 12 right where it counts.

Second photo-disciplined group that earned its title thru hard work and focus.

I would suggest that Matt would not have won a championship with the same group that Roy did. What a difference a coach makes.

Also . . .

IIRC some of the players Ol' Roy won the '05 NCAA hoops championship with were just about to bolt right out of Chapel Hill if Matt was retained as HC. Also (we'll never know of course) the Heels likely wouldn't have won in '05 if Roy hadn't recruited Marvin Williams to the hill for that one season.

Hahahaha! This post is so

Hahahaha!
This post is so true...so true. I wish more members of our society could understand the importance of how you present and carry yourself in life.
Good Post JPG!

Are you the same...

SoPinesHeel as on another football site? It's a small world. I agree a winning atmosphere and attitude is built from the ground up.

Predictable

JPG-

What a cynical perspective! This whole Obama/UNC story is a happy and positive one, but we can rely on your stellar craftsmanship to introduce some negative angle. In these troubled times, what is your problem with a positive story playing out on its own merits?

Besides, the top picture should never have happened in the first place. From my perspective, Dick Baddour and his staff made a huge mistake by orchestrating a national news conference to announce Matt Doherty's dismissal. Instead, they should have issued a short news release (one paragraph) announcing the change and allowed Coach Doherty to make his own statement if he so desired. That was no way to treat a fellow Tar Heel who played on one of UNC's national championship teams. A simple and straightforward press release was all that was indicated.

My point is that UNC's press clippings are not always as happy or positive as today's story about the 2009 champs and our President. Neither does NC State, Duke, Wake nor virtually any other college always enjoy positive press. So, why introduce the negativity on such a happy occasion?

no coach

in the first one, it was a resignation. there was no coach. slow day, I guess.
