Wall sparks Facebook frenzy

Bookmark and Share

RALEIGH — The N.C. State athletics department has told a university student to shut down a Facebook group urging highly touted basketball recruit John Wall to commit to the Wolfpack program.

The university's compliance office for NCAA issues, Michelle Lee, sent a cease-and-desist letter to the N.C. State student this morning. The letter cited concerns that the "John Wall PLEASE come to NC STATE!!!" group launched on the popular social networking site constitutes improper contact with a prospective student-athlete, according to NCAA bylaws.

"NCAA bylaws go on to state that all in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts, as well as correspondence and telephone calls, with a prospective student-athlete shall be made only by authorized institutional staff members," the letter said. "With this correspondence, North Carolina State is alerting you to the applicable NCAA legislation. Any current or future recruiting contact, as well as correspondence and/or telephone calls must cease immediately. Should this activity not cease and/or it continues in the future, we will have no choice but to take further action."

The letter does not go on to specify what that further action might be.

News of the Facebook group devoted to the Raleigh Word of God senior, who is rated the No. 1 point guard available in this recruiting class, first came to light in an article published Tuesday in the Technician, N.C. State's student paper.

Wall has yet to commit to a college but lists Memphis, Baylor, Duke, N.C. State, Miami, Kansas and Kentucky on his list of possible schools.

Wall currently is in Portland, Ore., preparing to play in the Nike Hoop Summit, an exhibition game featuring an international all-star team. He also is scheduled to play in the Jordan Brand Classic game in New York City on April 18.

straight up

I have it on good authority from a 10+ owner of seats at the Smith Center that signing John Wall is of high probability.

hold tight fans!!

Perhaps

Certainly a possibility, if:

  • Ty leaves, probably;
  • He has the grades, maybe;
  • Roy likes his character, unknown.
  • He would consider staying more than one year, not sure.

I am a UNC alum and fan who hates all posters that trash

the "other" school!!! Granted, JW isn't likely to go to State but those comments make you look cheap and give the opposite haters just the few cases they love to point too to back up their ABC hatred!

The NCSU student should tell the compliance officer to stick it!! The US Constuitution trumps the NCAA I am pretty sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Learn from this.

This is what happens when a rigid bureaucracy tries to micromanage an inherently personal activity for what it perceives to be the greater good.

Get used to this everyone. Next in line is a cease and desist to making partisan comments in ACCNOW and, when that fails, a JP Giglio perp walk.

Not going to happen

It is not going to happen, so all NC State fans need to move on now. John Wall is not going to come to NC State. He is being recruited by the elite coaches in the NCAA (John C., Roy W., Mike K.). They all have point guard vacancies. Why would he want to waste a season being yelled at from the sideline by Sidney Lowe when he can get solid coaching and guidance from John C., Roy W., and Mike all who have produced excellent players who are playing well in the NBA. After all, the NBA is where John Wall ultimately wants to be. Why not play for a coach who can get you there!

Wow...

I am a State grad twice over and am sorry to see our compliance officer make an absolute fool of herself and make a laughing stock out of our athletic department. Is there anyone in this office with any semblance of legal training?:
"...recruiting contacts, as well as correspondence and telephone calls, with a prospective student-athlete shall be made only by authorized institutional staff members." This phrase obviously means authorized institutional staff members as opposed to any staff members in general, such as an AD, professor, etc. A student is not a staff member in any sense of the word. Taking her faulty logic to its conclusion would preclude anyone who goes to State from ever talking to John Wall, even his friends in town....ridiculous.

"NCAA legislation"...oooohh, scary!

"Should this activity not cease and/or it continues in the future, we will have no choice but to take further action." What are they going to do? Sue him? Kick him out of school? NC State has no jurisdiction over students' Facebook pages and the student has broken no articles of the Code of Conduct. This letter is a disgrace....

just say No to cease n desist

welcome to the age of social media ncaa

I wouldn't be surprised at

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the First Amendment trumps "NCAA bylaws" on this point.

Proof

The proof is before you folks: Would an adminstration that wanted to win issue this ultimatum? If that is the way it is going to be, NCSU should seriously consider stepping down from the ACC. We may actually be competetive in Davidson's conference.

NCAA

The NCAA really needs to get a grip. I'd love a breakoff organization to form.

Carolina Fans are so predictable

I am no longer surprised to see more Powder Blue Bandwagoners come onto NC State stories and spew venom than any other demographic of the state. UNC Fans, revel in your championship, this one was earned. If there were as much class in the UNC fan base as there were the storied reputation of the school, then the blogging would be so much cleaner and family friendly. The monacre of being an upper eschelon institution is only reserved for the Alumni and Faculty, not the come as you are fanwagon.

John Wall can go wherever he would like to go. The NBA will be there, if he is good enough, regardless of his college choice.

Pfft

Let me get this straight -- NC State sent a cease-and-desist to a fan? What a bunch of morons. I hope he/she keeps it up and tells them to go pound sand.

How about something like "We love you man. But, the NCAA doesn't, and we don't want to get nailed because they think that you're recruiting. Yeah, they're a bunch of idiots, but we have to deal with them anyway. So, please take down the facebook page. Oh, and here are some front-row tickets to next year's State-Carolina game."

You have got to be kidding...

the NCAA will allow a coach to hire the family or friends of a prospective player, but some student uses the internet as a mechanism of free speech and he/she has violated some stupid contact rule...and the irrelevant NCSU Athletics Department rolls into high gear to stop this egregious violation...I would tell them to kiss my %^&!!!!
Now, I know this "John Wall come to NCSU" website is a waste of time...John Wall will not play for NC State, but the University staff needs to worry more about getting players and/or coaches worth a damn.

NCSU students are definitely

NCSU students are definitely wasting their time, but Awoo1979 has "10th rate" grammar. Nice try, though. It looks like you are probably a UNC fan that wasn't quite smart enough to actually go to school there.

wolfpack vs facebook.....

The school can only do so much! It may actually be a freedom of speech deal I think. Either way a waste of time. Chances are he will go somewhere else. NC State hasn't been all that relevant for a good while.

 fat burners on sale

you are an idiot

Of course someone talking shit about State can't even spell or post grammatically correct sentences. You are probably a Carolina or Duke fan who's never even been to Chapel Hill or Durham, much less attended the university you cheer for. In short, shut the hell up.

"who's" got the errors???

deadprez,

how bout you learn when to use contractions and WHEN NOT TO!

"You are probably a UNC or Duke fan WHO HAS never been to Chapel Hill or Durham ..."  "who's" is so incorrect!!

clearly they don't teach grammar at the University of Florida

Who's is a perfectly acceptable contraction for "who has"...go look it up if you don't believe me.  Maybe you should go back to the University of Florida (if you ever went there in the first place) and take a couple basic english classes.

go easy on the little

go easy on the little fella.  he doesnt know any better.  he is an ezu alum.

If the shoe fits . . .

What's up here? Are you the N.C.State Police who decide who has an opinion worthy of being on this blog? He (or whe) has as much right to express his or her opinion as you do. What gives you the right to tell someone to shut up? Maybe you're the one who is out of line here.

just as ignorant as the person you're defending

If he was actually adding something to the discussion and not just spewing some anti-NCSU nonsense then I would be fine with him expressing his opinion, but that wasn't the case.  Of course, I wouldn't expect someone who also lacks a basic comprehension of spelling or grammar to understand this.

John Wall

Please cease and desist because you are wasting your time! I doubt John Wall wants to spend his one year in college playing for and 10th rate program.
