CHAPEL HILL -- Butch Davis tried to warn his team about winless Virginia. The Tar Heels didn't get the message.
Virginia beat UNC 16-3 at Kenan Stadium on Saturday for its first win of the season. Mikell Simpson ran for 100 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cavaliers to their fourth straight win over UNC and 10th in the past 12 meetings.
UNC's offense was ineffective and the return of Simpson from a leg injury, was a boost for the Hoos, who came into the game with an 0-3 record.
UVa's kicker, Robert Randolph, and blitzing defense were UNC's undoing. Robert Randolph kicked field goals of 36, 38 and 43 yards. The defense has allowed only 174 yards of total offense and nine first downs. The Hoos sacked UNC quarterback T.J. Yates four times and intercepted him twice.
The first pick led to UVa's only touchdown. Down 9-3 and with a chance to take the lead, Yates was popped by Nate Collins and the wobbly pass was picked off by Chase Minnifield with 9:22 left in the fourth quarter.
Simpson capped the subsequent scoring drive with an 8-yard run up the gut of UNC's defense.
A 39-yarder by Casey Barth at 5:09 in the third quarter were the only points Carolina's offense could muster.
The Tar Heels managed just three first downs and 67 yards of offense in the first half. The Cavaliers sacked Yates twice and held UNC's ground game to nine yards on 13 carrie in the first half.
The Hoos had a 20-yard touchdown to Kris Burd called back because of an illegal receiver down field penalty in the final minute of the first offense. Jameel Sewell, who has completed 7-of-12 passes for 55 yards, scrambled for nine yards, and recovered his own fumble, to set up Randolph's second FG, a 38-yarder at the buzzer.
The Heels have three sacks of their own and have given up only 129 yards but the offense hasn't been able to run block or protect Yates.
Receiver Greg Little has seven catches for 60 yards but UNC has been inside Virginia territory only twice.

Field of Vision?
Mon, 10/05/2009 - 13:37 — jeromfitzField of Vision is the key to winning games and where is Mr. Yates Field of Vision? The pass protection is letting him down a lot but he has to learn to scramble about into better means to making first downs. I don't blame him but its the whole team at fault because they didn't want to win. Just at UNC because I think I got a better chance to make the next level but ain't ready for the best opponents. I don't know who next at QB but it close to making Yates a last call for being a starter. Practice after practices or off days with offensive players is a key to good timing patterns and success.
U-G-L-Y!
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 13:39 — gvillegatrtwo weeks at the beach in a row. two horrible losses in a row. note to self: no more beach this year! thank god for golf courses ... only had to endure the last 10 mins of the 4th qtr.
start Blue and bench Yates. start Houston and never put Draughn on the field again. and please go sign some offensive linemen, ours are hurt, tired and bad.
I liked Toots article in the paper this morning about the inability of UNC to ever have a great QB. spot on.
breathe in, breathe out, move on. next week could be scary, though.
Note to Gatr

Oh well, pile it on...
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 21:07 — UNC1998Just remember what goes comes back twice as bad. UNC's offense is suffering greatly. It will be up to the coaches to figure out what would work best and fit it into the upcoming games. I'm getting more and more realistic about this. I could see UNC not winning again, but I honestly think they're best chances to win will be in the next two games.
just saying...
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 21:27 — mad_maxHow do you know this wasn't what "comes back twice as bad"? All the talk about how bad State looked against SC, and how UNC was a legitimate top-25 team...not trying to take a cheap shot, just showing the flaw in that assessment. It's just like people who talk about karma...when does it start and when does it end?
UNC will win more games this year (aside from just Georgia Southern), and heck they may even get lucky and win their last regular season game :P. As bad as they look right now, and as much as I hate them, it's hard for me to see them losing 6 more games this year. Things are always darkest before the light...though, that saying may not be any more valid than yours.
I think...
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 22:27 — Heels20...Jake Delhomme beat up Yates and took his uniform. We really could not possibly have played any worse (offensively) than we did today. Who knows how the rest of the year turns out? I still think that we have potential, but we need to do something about our offensive coordinator. I knew his flaws would show up at some point considering he was fired by the Raiders. Or maybe Marc Trestman was in on the conspiracy, and took Shoop's spot as the play-caller...
"Your comment about how UNC
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 16:57 — wsphutch"Your comment about how UNC will lose to UVA only proves that God works in ways so mysterious, that we could all spend years on why you were blessed with the right to talk, and still never figure it out."
...... bwahahahaha
No way out of this one for
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 22:01 — Heels20No way out of this one for me. You made your share of idiotic comments last week, but unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst. Good win this weekend.
The Big Four
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 09:20 — wsphutchDoesn't this year make you wish we could have a format where the Big 4 would play each year? I hate the fact that we play UNC like twice every 5 yrs. I know the system now is prolly the best we can do, but sometimes it seems silly to have separated such long standing series and rivalries.
And this year makes me miss it more b/c none of our (Big 4) teams are looking very good, so the intrastate games would at least give us fodder for football banter and friendly (and unfriendly) ribbing - ergo making the football season more fun.
By the way, I am thinking of adopting an SEC team to follow so I can at least watch some consistent football every now and then.
Haha
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 23:20 — mad_maxYou may be onto something there...with both the Jake Delhomme and Marc Trestman references.

I was at Kenan 4 years ago
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 17:03 — Heels20I was at Kenan 4 years ago to see Carolina's 7-5 victory over the Hoos. Sadly, I was much more impressed by that performance. We need to figure something out quick because the last 2 showings were completely unacceptable.

The Offensive Line is just Plain Old OFFENSIVE
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 14:39 — deucemacThe people who spent their hard earned money to attend Kenan Stadium today should be refunded in full. The offensive line couldn't block the sun even if they had maxium strength sunscreen! With a horrible offensive line you need a quarterback that is mobile, and mobile and Yates will never be in the same sentence. I suggest starting AJ Blue, he's athletic and has a strong arm, and the offensive line doesn't have to be good for him to be effective. In the words of Mick from Rocky, Yates is a bum, Cam Sexton would have given my Heels a much better chance of winning this season!
bleacher creatures
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 14:58 — noneyabusinessI think there were even fewer heels "fans" in the stands during the fourth quarter today than last years decimation by the Pack.

Just kidding around...
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 12:13 — UNC1998I really don't have it in me to trash other teams or fans. I believe it's just a game. There is a way to support your team without demeaning another. One thing I will agree with all fans everywhere is.... UNC played terrible on offense Saturday. I sat there and thought "will they win again this year?". To me, that's a serious question. The offense looked like keystone cops, and played like paper tigers.
Pathetic
Sat, 10/03/2009 - 14:00 — collinunc02Utterly pathetic. Between the Heels and the Panthers, we're certainly getting a lesson in futility.
