Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez has been voted player of the year in
ACC basketball by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media
Association.
A senior from Caracas, Venezuela, the 6-foot-5
guard was named on 39 of 53 ballots cast. Duke guard Jon Scheyer was
second with 12 votes and Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney received
the other two.
"This means so much to me," Vasquez said. "After four years of
working so hard, to be the ACC Player of the Year is unbelievable. I
don't have enough words to express how happy I am for my teammates, my
coaches and my whole country. People in Venezuela have been so
supportive and making me a better player and a better person."
Vasquez is the sixth Maryland player to win the award and the first since Juan Dixon in 2002.

Bevis Assquez
Tue, 03/09/2010 - 23:37 — Heels20I was kind of surprised Scheyer didn't get it because I feel like he has the most to offer as far as holding a team together. Then I recognized that despite the pure hatred that may have had me temporarily blinded me from what Vasquez has done, he has helped earn his team just as good of an ACC record with less to work with around him. Milbourne and Hayes are both fantastic players, but can't be compared to Singler and Smith. As much as I hate the guy, Assquez deserves it.
Agree---he's a real hot dog
Wed, 03/10/2010 - 09:34 — Shoreman67Agree---he's a real hot dog and a player opposing teams love to hate, but he backs it up with great play, particularly in the clutch. He deserves the award. I'm glad to see him go---maybe State can now win a game against Md........

Vasquez
Wed, 03/10/2010 - 02:16 — LetsGoPittGood point, Heel20, the Terps are not as talented nor as deep as the Blue Devils, making Grevis' body of work that much more impressive.
But, man, why so much hate for the guy? Where's all the tolerance and diversity and multiculturalism that oozes from our universities (especially at Duke)? Venuzuelan culture is a little different than Chapel Hill's ( see Ozzie Guillen). So he gets a little carried away; at least he didn't pull a Chris Paul.
I have a feeling that Venezuelan culture...
Wed, 03/10/2010 - 12:39 — Heels20...has nothing to do with why people dislike him. There's nothing wrong with shouting out to your home country or holding on to the culture. There is something wrong with going out on the court, putting up 25 points, and yet leaving fans only with the realization that you were never spanked as a child. As a player, he's got the talent. As a person, acting like a complete thug and calling opposing fans racist when they call you out for it is only a sign of immaturity.
Vasquez
Tue, 03/09/2010 - 19:53 — mad_maxHis play on the court makes him worthy of this award. His attitude and personality makes him worthy of the title, biggest douche in the ACC.

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 16:33 — JPDOhioJon Scheyer was worthy of this honor as well, but you can't really argue against Vasquez. A guy you love to hate, but wish was on your team.
