UNC running back Anthony Elzy is due in court on Aug. 24 for a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, according to Orange County court records.
Elzy, the second-team fullback, was charged on May 22 for possessing less than half of an ounce of marijuana. The junior from Warren, Ohio has already been disciplined by Tar Heels coach Butch Davis, according to a team spokesman.
Elzy rushed for 321 yards on 92 carries as a freshman tailback but was moved to fullback with the emergence of Shaun Draughn. He had only three carries for five yards in seven games in 2008. He missed the final six games with a broken scapula.
Elzy is one of three UNC football players who has been arrested since spring practice. Former offensive lineman Kevin Bryant was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female on July 1 and freshman defensive end Donte Paige-Moss was charged with misdemeanor simple assault on July 17.

This happens at every school
Wed, 11/24/2010 - 06:49 — ajbronzenThis happens at every school, nothing to see here. I guarantee you that if the NCAA launched a probe of every Super cheap meds online, they would find wrongdoing and academic violations at 90-95% of them. At least Carolina had the integrity to turn itself in, unlike its neighboring school 30 miles down the road which quietly brushed aside police reports stating that several of its players were in possession of NCAA banned performance enhancing drugs.

Sun, 08/16/2009 - 00:19 — jeromfitzwith all the ingredients that keep hope alive before you bottom out the injury reserve list. We've all seen how campus life is in college everyone or some of you have done the same but never got caught up. It's a shame to the game that they cut down your fun and good time to fame. recruiting
Thu, 08/13/2009 - 18:49 — sweetseaI am a Carolina alum but it looks like we may have picked up a transfer from the State Pen...uh I meant Penn State. Seriously there are some players too sorry to be recruited. I ran into Jim Valvano the day after he signed Chris Washburn in an airport and congratulated him on signing the #1 basketball recruit in the country and he said thanks but I don't know how it will work out. He did not act excited about it at all and was in fact even seemed apprehensive. Now we all know why. Washburn was just too stupid and had behavioral problems that were unmanageable. The Tar Heels as do all college teams need to be selective to avoid embarrassments such as those mentioned here.

Thu, 08/13/2009 - 16:49 — hamm32The stupidity of most of the comments is overwhelming. Anyone who knows the facts surrounding Butch Davis time at Miami knows that he came in and cleaned up a program that was on probation. The facts have never gotten in the way of those from Dook and state.
State suffers from such an inferiority complex that their babbling hardly warrants consideration.
The behavior of the Dook faculty and students during the lacrosse fiasco will always serve as a shining example of Dook objectivity.
Wow, what a great mind you
Fri, 08/14/2009 - 09:19 — mad_maxWow, what a great mind you must have. Everyone else is stupid and childish, but you're a genius and the only person that's worthy to post comments on this blog. Get off your high horse and stop generalizing fan bases. It can easily be done right back at ya, but most of us on here aren't that foolish and petty. Also, I just don't understand why unc fans even bring up the duke lacrosse scandal. I mean, they were innocent...set up, accused, and thrown under the bus by who? None other than a unc alumnus, mr mike nifong. What a joke it is to even think that bringing up this topic is somehow offensive to duke fans.

Please. We've all seen the "Rap Sheet." unx has a long tradition of fball player thuggery. It is what is.
The behavior of the Duke faculty and students during the lacrosse

Agreed. They were NOT objective. Thing is,Duke fans will readily concede that fact rather than divert, spin and ignore. unx'ers should try it sometime.

Thu, 08/13/2009 - 21:13 — BeNiceYou're not even a very good troll. I mean, you've based most of your antagonistic behavior on a typo that's years old. Look, we know what most State fans mean by "thuggery" (which isn't even a word, by the way, not that I'd expect you to know that). It's just a shame that people like you can't move past the Dixiecrat era and into contemporary society. A real shame.

Thu, 08/13/2009 - 14:57 — followthemoneyIs this three arrests in three days?
And to think, some of Davis' supporters said he was not going to turn UNC in the University of New Convicts. Shameful.
Not really
Thu, 08/13/2009 - 15:11 — JPDOhioThe actual incidents are spread apart, but the court date announcements (apparently) and Bryant not showing up at camp all hit around the same time. So I think it is somewhat of a coincidence that this is coming out now.
The legal process will take care of itself, but this demonizing of the UNC program is ridiculous. When you have almost 100 19-23 year olds, you are going to get some of this stuff. I am not condoning or condemning the behavior. But kids are going to do stupid things and the coaches cannot be with them 24/7.
This happens at every school in varying degrees. The important thing is that appropriate disciplinary action is taken that is commensurate with the infraction.
On the other hand....
Thu, 08/13/2009 - 15:12 — JPDOhioThis reporting may just be pro-Wolfpack Giglio sticking it to the Tar Heels like he always does.

Thu, 08/13/2009 - 14:49 — roypaysplayersWhy am I not surprised? The "tradition" continues. unx sold its soul a long time ago to attain fball relevancy. These 3 latest incidents are unique ONLY in their frequency. They've come in quick succession rather than a more staggered (but no less predictable) fashion. Thank goodness for Duke fball, huh holes? The Devils have been so bad that the unx program was spared a harsh scrutiny that they would've never survived. Unfortunately for OCCC,Duke has re-committed itself to building a winning program. The "free rides" are over and more fans will become aware of just how low a school has been willing to go to win some fball games. Here's hoping that your delusional fanbase enjoyed these last few seasons. The microscope's about to get a little more focused on the shenanigans and chicanery that's always been a part of that Mickey Mouse fball program.

Fri, 08/14/2009 - 00:34 — bobmac"No big deal..."? Tell that to the mom & dad of a high school athlete who wants to be a Tar Heel.
"A slap on the wrist.." - Evidently, Butch feels the same way since "the jjr. from Warrenton, Oh has already been disciplined by Tar Heel coach Butch Davis," per team spokesman. Sounds like Elzy did the crime and served the time since the sentence was complete and it was business as usual in the Davis camp. I guess Butch never served any time in the Marines.
Usually drunks want to fight and assault while Mary Jane users chill & enter the Twilight Zone. Butch, can you spell character? How about discipline?

Thu, 08/13/2009 - 12:25 — JamesinWillowSpringsNot that State hasn't had its own share of issues recently (*cough*Men's tennis team, Pete Singer*cough*), but damn, UNC is awash in weed it seems lately.
How many weed-related arrests has this been since Bunting was hired back at the start of the decade? A half-dozen or so?
I think weed-related crimes are a joke, for the most part, but until it gets legalized it's still a crime to smoke, possess and/or sell it, but it seems like that hasn't slowed the Tar Heel players down any over the last ten years.
Can't spell "Blunt College" without the U-N-C...
Why would anyone want to
Thu, 08/13/2009 - 13:58 — JHook81Why would anyone want to spell "Blunt College?" Do you do so on a regular basis? Did you know that spelling "Blunt College" also requires b, l, t, o, g, two e's, and three l's? You'd need those too, if you were going to walk around spelling "Blunt College" frequently. Of course, I don't know why you would.

James is just trying to act like Steve Spurrier is all. You know, "you can't spell Citrus without UT." As in Tennessee always comes up short in the SEC and has to accept the Citrus Bowl.
I can think of a lot worse things to be called than Blunt College ...
No, I got what he was
Thu, 08/13/2009 - 21:33 — JHook81No, I got what he was saying. I'm familiar with the expression. But James just made up a phrase ("Blunt College") so that he could say, basically, "You can't spell this phrase I made up just for the purposes of putting 'UNC' in it without putting 'UNC' in it."
