North Carolina associate head coach John Blake resigned on Sunday night, the school announced.

Blake has been involved in the NCAA investigation of the UNC football program, according to Gary Wichard, an NFL agent and Blake's close friend. UNC coach Butch Davis has also connected Blake to the investigation for possible improper contact with sports agents.

Blake, 49, will be paid for the remainder of the season, $74,500 according to a UNC release.

"[I]t has become apparent to me over the course of the past few weeks that my presence has become a distraction to my family and to this great University, too," Blake said in a statement released by the school.

Blake coached in UNC's season-opener on Saturday night, a 30-24 UNC loss to LSU in Atlanta. Thirteen UNC players did not play because of the on-going NCAA investigation and UNC's own investigation into possible academic fraud.

Davis and Blake have a relationship that goes back almost 35 years, when Davis taught Blake in high school in Oklahoma in the late 1970s. Davis and Blake worked together as assistant coaches for the Dallas Cowboys in the early 1990s before Davis hired Blake as a his recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach at UNC in Dec. 2006.

Blake, considered one of the game's top recruiters, scored his first coup for UNC by landing defensive tackle Marvin Austin, a prep All-American from Washington, D.C., late in the recruiting process.

Blake's connection to Wichard and Austin led to his involvement in the NCAA case.

Before returning to the college game in 2003, Blake worked for Wichard's Pro Tect Management in California. Former UNC defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer, who played one season for Blake, signed with Wichard after getting drafted in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2008.

In the summer of 2009, Balmer paid for a trip to a training facility — that Wichard has used for his clients — by Austin and former UNC defensive tackle Cam Thomas, according to Thomas.

That trip to California, and other trips to Miami and Washington, by Austin this past spring attracted the attention of NCAA investigators. UNC suspended Austin indefinitely last Wednesday. Two other defensive linemen, Robert Quinn and Michael McAdoo, were held out of Saturday's opener by the school.

UNC athletic director Dick Baddour would not comment on Blake's role in the investigation.

"That's a road which to make any reference to it would put me in a situation where I can't go," Baddour said in an interview with the News & Observer.

Davis has previously refused to comment on Blake's role in the investigation but issued a statement on Sunday.

"All of us who are part of the football program have been both disappointed and embarrassed by recent events," Davis said according to the release. "Our student-athletes, coaches and I are committed to working every day, both on and off the field, to build a better football program, one that everyone associated with the University of North Carolina can and will be proud of.”

UNC did not say if it would fill Blake's position for the remainder of the 2010 season. He will be paid the prorated amount of his $240,000 salary for the rest of the season, according to the UNC release.

"I have grown to love and respect the school, my fellow coaches, and the young men who have worked so diligently to improve both as students and as football players," Blake said in the statement. "That love and respect has led me to the conclusion that the best decision for all involved is for me to step aside at this time. I wish the players, the coaches, and the University all the best."

UNC has an open date before returning to the field on Sept. 18 against Georgia Tech at Kenan Stadium. UNC has not said how long the 13 players will be held out.

With all due respect...

In Kool Aid it's tequila, and with Arnold Palmer it's Vodka. Not that I do that often.

Actually I am that

Actually I am that proverbial wine and cheese guy but will imbibe any of the above under the right circumstances. ie: After reading to many articles about  UNC problems with their accompanying hateraide filled ABCers comments.

The Fall Guy"

The one thing I have learned in life is that there is "ALWAYS" a fall guy, John Blake has become that man for UNC. We all have friends in different walks of life, there were no illegal dealings, just the mere fact that John and Gary have been friends for over 25 years. I think it's a shame that it had to come to this. UNC not only lost a GOOD coach, they lost a GOOD man!!!!

GOOD man...

Unfortunately, GOOD men don't have BAD reputations following them throughout their chosen industries. A GOOD man wouldn't have the nickname Black Santa if he didn't earn it.

Well...

...it looks like UNC has found their scape-goat.  Let's see if the NCAA drinks the kool-aid.

35 yrs old

and I still love all flavors of kool-aid except black cherry.  I imagine the NCAA likes kool-aid as well!

I like to mix two packets of

I like to mix two packets of different flavors together, and make a jumbo batch!

Not to jump in...

mix the Ice tea and Lemonade Crystal Lite in a jug and get a gallon of Arnold Palmer drinks... and they're pretty good.

But its the 'white

But its the 'white lightning' ingredient that really brings it together

speaking of white lightning

I had some Peach Brandy over the weekend.  yummy!

If its well made theres

If its well made theres nothing like it on earth. Love the stuff but you gotta strap yourself into your chaise lounge on the porch and leave the driving to other folks.

Me

I just think I'll grab a beer.

On the local

ABC TV stations website.... They have a telephone interview with AD Baddour from today (Sep. 6). He said he doesn't expect any players to be dismissed fromt the team. He also said he's confident no more coaches will leave/be let go.

I read elsewhere that the word on Blake is that he was given a choice by Holden Thorp...resign or be fired. The reasoning behind this decision was that Blake indeed was connected to the mess, and that he was the only coach on the staff with that connection. There was also mention of the idea that some of the other coach(es) on the staff did not like the way he went about his job as "recruiting coordinator". In detail they said he was abbrasive, and often stepped in to close the deal with recruits, and thus, claim credit when they commited. I know Blake has a reputation as a great recruiter, but there is also the fact that part of the reason Tommy Thigpen left was that he and Blake didn't see "eye to eye" on some important issues. I'll be honest in saying I never dreamed that any of this could be reality. I'm not real sure what to make of it. It could be shoveling dirt on him or true. I just hope this is the beginning of the end of this, and that it shows the NCAA that UNC is being proactive. Also, that Davis and UNC indeed have total control over the program. Lastly, that these issues, however unsavory, are isolated with regard to their presence throughout the program.

Swofford Comments on This Disgrace

Hey JP : Has any attempt been made to get a comment from Swofford or the ACC office concerning this disgrace? I'd really like to hear some strong words from them on the measures they intend to take to ensure ongoing academic integrity in the ACC. Their brand is being threatened. Isn't it time for them to take a stand?

not really a surprise

I think John Blake had to resign, it's not a big surprise. But the situation is really messy I agree ...

Sorry JP, I know this is off

Sorry JP, I know this is off topic....do you know if they have the foootball helmet schedule this year?  And if so, think you could give us a link?  Lol thanks :)

not surprising

I think the mass majority of folks on both side would agree John Blake was probably going to get the boot.

I still do not believe Coach Davis is going to get the boot for this unfortunate mess.

It depends

If it turns out that the problem was one tutor and Marvin being stupid, I would agree. And it is possible it could turn out that way, because we just don't know yet. But if the NCAA finds more systemic problems, Butch is still in jeopardy.

Butch is definitely not out

Butch is definitely not out of the woods. IF this is contained as you say then I suspect he will hang on. The other question is does he want to?

I agree....

I do not think Davis will be gone after this season. It just seems to me that he's saying the right things and doing the right things. If he decides to leave I do not think it will be to take another job. With all the places I've read that Davis not coming back it seems I've not read one thing that he's said or that people close to him have said that would even intimate such action. UNC it seems is doing all it can to proclaim his job is not in danger. I believe them. Those saying Baddour is in danger seem to forget he is always in danger according to a faction of UNC fans. What really matters is what Chancellor Thorp thinks. While he looked incredibly uncomfortable in the news conference announcing the tutor stuff he has since gone out of his way to show support for Davis and Baddour. While in some cases that is the "kiss of death", I do not think that applies here.

Carolina Messy Situation

Blake took the first hit. Now we need  about three or four players to go. Butch is not off the hook yet.

Interesting

I guess more stuff's about to come.

There seems to be a fast

There seems to be a fast forward element here. I suspect the administration wants to clear up the first part of this investigation as soon as possible and it looks like Blake is the first hit. I am sure we will not see Marvin in a Carolina uniform again. As for the others and the academic side of the investigation we will just have to wait and see.

I did talk to a friend who used to be a faculty member at UNC and was part of the faculty oversight committee for athletics during his time there. I asked him what the worst case scenario would be in this situation. He said that the student in question would receive an F for the class and be put on probation. He felt that the players would not be kicked out of school because it would be a harsher treatment then a  regular student would receive. Given that a particular player would receive an F for his class would that knock his grade point average low enough to make him academically ineligible for the season? Not to mention whatever sanctions would be imposed by Davis.
