Miami's Jordan Futch (58) sacks UNC quarterback Bryn Renner in the second quarter. ROBERT WILLETT - rwillett@newsobserver.com
Update 6:38 p.m.
CHAPEL HILL – The potential problems were always there during North Carolina’s first six games: the lack of third-down stops, an inconsistent secondary, a still-learning first-year quarterback.
But what was overshadowed against lesser opponents during their 5-1 start was exposed during the Tar Heels’ 30-24 loss to Miami (3-3) at Kenan Stadium on Saturday.
Although a late touchdown grab by freshman Reggie Wilkins and onside kick recovery by sophomore Curtis Campbell gave Carolina (5-2) a chance to win in the final minute, UNC never really recovered from a slow start and early 17-0 hole.
Now at 1-2 in the Coastal Division, its dreams of an ACC championship berth are flatlining.
“I doesn’t matter what game it is, whether it’s a past game that you made a mistake, you’re trying to correct them each week,’’ said UNC interim coach Everett Withers, whose team remains one victory away from bowl eligibility. “I think the mistakes that we made today were critical.”
UNC’s issues – hidden amid the final winning scores against previous opponents like Louisville and East Carolina– showed themselves at key points:
• The Tar Heels gave up their first first-quarter touchdown of the season on Miami’s opening drive when Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris found Mike James for a 4-yard touchdown pass. UM converted two third downs and one fourth down during its almost-six-minute march, chewing up clock time and successfully keeping Carolina’s offense off the field.
That was particularly key the for the Hurricanes on Saturday, considering their defense was missing seven contributors, including four starters, and coach Al Golden had stressed this week that his offense needed to make up for the D’s deficiencies.
“The first drive they had on offense, we’ve just got to stop them,’’ UNC defensive back Charles Brown said. “…We’ve got to get them off the field.”
• After UM’s Nathan Gholston recovered UNC freshman T.J. Thorpe’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff return, the Hurricanes faked an end-around, and junior Tommy Streeter was wide open for a 27-yard touchdown that made it 14-0.
The Tar Heels were so concerned about Lamar Miller, the ACC’s leading rusher whom they limited to a season-low 29 yards, that their secondary ended up getting burned for 267 yards and three touchdowns by Harris. Keep in mind: Harris had only thrown nine touchdowns in four previous games this season.
“Our emphasis was to stop the run,’’ Withers said. “And they made plays in the passing game.”
• Although UNC had to settle for three points in the red zone in the second quarter, then zero points near the beginning of the fourth when tailback Gio Bernard was stopped on a fourth-and-two, UNC still had a chance to win it after a frenetic final period that saw Bernard score on a 3-yard run, Wilkins catch a 20-yard touchdown pass, and UNC recover an onside kick.
But with time ticking down, sophomore quarterback Bryn Renner was sacked for a 7-yard loss – yet again holding onto the ball too long, instead of throwing it away, as he had so many times in previous games. Two plays later, time ultimately ran out.
“I just can’t take those sacks,’’ said Renner, who was 29-for-37 for 288 yards and two touchdowns. “I don’t know what we can do in practice to make it any better; we do it every day. The more experience I gain in those situations, the better decisions I’ll make. But that falls on [me]; I can’t get sacked in those situations.”
Bernard (110 yards on 27 carries) was UNC’s highlight of the game, recording his fifth straight 100-yard rushing outing, the team’s longest streak since Ethan Horton also did it five consecutive times in 1984.
But it didn’t make up for the Tar Heels’ continued problems.
“The old saying is, ‘It doesn’t hurt you until it hurts you,’ – and that’s what happened today,’’ Withers said.

Mon, 10/17/2011 - 17:56 — unc098Listened to this on radio while visiting my daughter at UGA ( thank god it wasn't a home game there)
This was a very disappointing loss. I hope that this doesn't set the tone for the nex 3 games. It really seems that this team is very slow getting out of the gate and that will spell doom against VT, Clemson and Wake. It also seems that Shoopism is taking its toll. I am thrilled that this will be his last season.
Bright side

Tue, 10/18/2011 - 14:13 — danofncThe State game has been a sure "W" in UNC fans' minds for the last 4 years. How's that working out?
Wonderfully
Tue, 10/18/2011 - 15:58 — SurferNo, not the past 4 years, but I would say the last 2. Yes it is something (a UNC victory) that UNC fans for so many, many years have been accostumed to, that yes the past 4 in a row have been sort of a shocker. How is it working out? Quite well, thank you. You guys still have TOB, and for that we are grateful.
It gets harder to compete
Tue, 10/18/2011 - 16:42 — danofncIt gets harder to compete when your players have to do their own work and your coaches aren't paying for their trips.
Nice one
Wed, 10/19/2011 - 11:51 — SurferBest excuse I have heard in quite some time. But you left out that they have to walk miles to class, up hill both ways and in 3 feet of snow.
Exciting finish
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 12:18 — mad_maxI figured UNC would have quite a few losses here soon, but this one was a toss up for me.
Saw most of the game, and to me it looked like Miami got up early, then played a little more conservatively in the 2nd half. To UNC's credit, they kept going full speed and nearly embarassed Al Golden. Heh, I went from celebrating, to biting my nails, to celebrating again.
Renner has been looking a lot more like I expected the past few games. He's definitely not bad, but he's young and inexpericed. Just glad his stat line from the season opener hasn't been repeated.
My preseason prediction for the Heels was 6-6. While it looks like they will probably beat that prediction, there aren't really any guaranteed wins left on the schedule. I could see them winning anywhere from 1 to 4 games over the last 5. Clemson and VT will be tough, Wake looks pretty good this year, Duke always plays Carolina close and is looking competent this year, and then there's the State game. It will also be interesting to see what happens, if anything, after the meeting with the COI two Fridays from now. Will the team fall apart, or will they rally together with their backs against the wall?
Gio Bernard
Sun, 10/16/2011 - 21:50 — gvillegatrDid anyone read what Gio had to say about the play calling on saturday ? Basically it broke down like this: Renner threw 37 passes, Gio ran the ball 27 and Houston 5.
UNC clearly was more effective on the ground than through the air. Gio basically put it on Shoop saying he was the one who calls the plays and i'm a team player and will do whatever i'm called upon to do. Shoop sees the defense from up in the booth ... blah, blah, blah.
I read it as Gio calling Shoop out. Good for you, Gio. Someone needs to.
Look at it this way fellow Tar Heel alums and fans: This is Shoop's last season. I'll sleep well knowning that !
JABARIWOCKY
Sun, 10/16/2011 - 12:01 — realsonicI'm shocked by this loss. I mean Jabari Price just informed us that UNC was one of the best football teams in the country. Why they were 5-1 and getting no "respect". Pitty poor Clemson as the Tarheels take out their rage against the hapless Tigers. I'm also glad Mr. "Not Still Bill" Withers isn't concerned about the impressions he makes on new AD Bubba Cunningham. Maybe he and Coach Davis can re-unite with a new team next season.
Hahaha
Sun, 10/16/2011 - 22:17 — mad_maxVery well played sir. All the Heel fans can do is call you names and make personal attacks...that's how you know you've got them beat!
Funny thing
Sun, 10/16/2011 - 17:23 — gvillegatrI almost paid a dollar to see you in the half spider half man exhibit at the SF. I may just double back and check you out.
First off...
Sat, 10/15/2011 - 22:44 — UNC1998congrats to Miami, it's players, coaches, and fan(s) on a hard fought victory.
UNC blew it. I'm not talking about the last time they had the ball with a chance for the "hail mary". I'm talking about the defense allowing UM to walk down the field to start the game, then fumbling the kickoff, then allowing another score, then punting. Those series set a tone. UNC was Miami's dog on a leash pretty much the entire first half. By the end of the game the only two categories Miami led in were the score and turnovers. Sure, that asleep at the wheel worked vs. Louisville. It almost worked out vs. Miami, and will get you identified by dental records after Clemson gets through with you. I've watched this team all season, and held faith that the words Withers spoke would manifest on the field. I'm now hoping the next coach can do a better job. There is no doubt now that UNC will have a new coach. I just hope the players keep investment, and don't quit a la Bunting at UVa (on big TV, ugh). I'm not throwing in a towel. I have decided I will not let the game ruin my first trip to Clemson next week.
BTW, I found Cunningham's words "We have an interim coach, and need a full time coach" telling. He was at the game today, and I'm sure is forming a list. Let's hope he finds a gem. I trust him due to his past success in that area. Granted UNC isn't Tulsa, and the goals are much larger.
short but ugly
Sat, 10/15/2011 - 16:39 — gvillegatrproud of the defense and how they didnt quit at all in the 2nd half. But you bent too many times in the 1st half minus the short field off the fumbled kickoff return in the 1st qtr.
Mr Renner,
As I have said twice before, you keep regressing. Your check downs take way too long and you have no awareness in the pocket ... and i'm not talking about your 2nd to last play of the game either. It was noticeable long before that. C'mon man. You're the guy so be the guy. Nov 5th is barreling down upon you ............
yep
Sat, 10/15/2011 - 19:03 — SurferYep, the kick off fumble and next play TD was the difference, but admittedly the O had ample other opportunities. It is looking more and more like an 8-4 season, maybe, which isn't so bad (just ask TOB), but Oh so close, with GT losing, a win today would have been HUGE, thus is UNC football I guess.
Nov 5th...TOB...
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 11:48 — noneyabusinessI thought duke was the official rival
you are correct
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 17:02 — SurferThey are, and always have been as long as I can remember.
Hmm
Tue, 10/18/2011 - 14:58 — mad_maxYou must be closer to my age Surfer...
Huh ?
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 13:11 — gvillegatrWhere did Surfer say anything about state being a rival ?
State who?
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 17:03 — SurferWaiting, waiting....
It's a shame
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 11:42 — JPDOhioHow the mighty have fallen. No longer is the goal competing for a National Championship. Matching TOB's best year so far with the Pack is now acceptable.
I can see the promo's now: "UNC football- at least we are better than the Wolfpack!". Except of course when they play the Wolfpack.
misinterpretation
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 17:10 — SurferSorry, but not saying that matching TOB's (one good year) best record is a goal, nor is it acceptable. Only saying that TOB would like to have that record (8-4) for himself this year. And it doesn't look like that is going to happen.
Oh, and no promo needed, everybody already knows it. ;)
UNC is far from being
Tue, 10/18/2011 - 10:04 — danofncUNC is far from being guaranteed 8-4.
correct
Tue, 10/18/2011 - 11:56 — SurferUNC is only guaranteed no worse than 5-7.
Woooo
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 12:03 — mad_maxJPD with the brutal smack talk!
Maybe the rest of us Pack fans should just stop posting and let you do all the talking. Haha, one of the funniest comments I've read in a while. Awesome.
Please...
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 12:31 — JPDOhioDon't encourage any Pack fans to stop posting. We need more. It's getting lonely around here!
I only saw the last few minutes of the UNC-Miami game and probably would have left it alone. But I couldn't let Surfer get away with another swipe at TOB, who may not be the savior of Wolfpack football but definitely OWNS the Tar Heels.
expansion needed
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 17:16 — SurferYep, TOB "owns" the Tar Heels (at least for the past 4 years), but he might want to start investing a little beyond that if he wants to coach at State beyond his retirement age.
P.S. TOB is the most "swipe-able" guy around, I am going to hate to see him go, not that I expect him to anytime soon that is.

Mon, 10/17/2011 - 13:09 — gvillegatrJPD, you're supposed to be the voice of reason here in this romper room and you're not doing that today. I'm gonna hbe to ask you to go in sit in the hall for a few minutes. :)
