CHAPEL HILL -- Entering the season, fans were looking to North Carolina’s highly-touted freshmen to lead their team back to prominence. But with a much-needed victory on the line Saturday, it the juniors who made the biggest impact for the Tar Heels down the stretch.
While point guard Larry Drew II clamped down on defense, 7-footer Tyler Zeller scored 12 of UNC’s final 16 points to top No. 10 Kentucky 75-73.
It was as close to a must-win as you could get this early in the season for the Tar Heels (5-3), considering they had already lost three games, fallen out of the top-25, and were facing serious questions about their toughness, offense, and ability to improve.
“It was extremely important for us, for every reason, to go out there and win the game,’’ said Drew, who helped his team hold the Wildcats to two field goals in the final 9 minutes, 57 seconds of the game. “Nobody came in here with the mindset of ‘What if this happens?’ or ‘What if this doesn’t happen?’ We all came in here to say, ‘we’re going to get this win no matter what.’’’
Indeed, UNC won despite the fact that Kentucky (5-2) made 42.9 percent of its 3-point shots; the Tar Heels didn’t score a field goal for the final 6:46 of the game; and superfreshman Harrison Barnes (12 points), who scored seven straight first-half points in a crowd-igniting display, went scoreless after halftime.
Poise, execution and clutch free throw shooting were key.
Trailing 67-66 with 1:36 left, for example, Drew came out of a timeout with one thing on his mind: get the ball to Zeller, who had made six straight free throws and was dominating Kentucky’s thin, foul-plagued frontcourt.
“They were either going to foul me or I was going to get a lay-up,’’ said Zeller, explaining his mindset down the stretch.
And that’s just what happened. Instead of playing as a bunch of nervous individuals and throwing up an errant jump shot – which has happened all too often this season and last -- the Tar Heels got the ball to their hot hand in the lane. Zeller got fouled, buried two more free throws and put his team ahead.
Kentucky took the lead one more time on its next play, when forward Josh Harrellson out-wrestled Zeller for an offensive rebound and scored to make it 69-68 with 53 seconds left.
But Zeller followed with another two free throws to give his team back a 70-69 lead, then Drew followed with two more foul shots after that to give the Tar Heels enough of a cushion to survive the final 21 seconds.
Zeller made 11 of his 12 free throws for the game and finished with a career-high 27 points, plus 11 rebounds and five blocks; teammate John Henson recorded his fourth double-double (13 points, 12 rebounds of the season). The duo also held UK freshman Terrance Jones, who was averaging a double-double, to 9 points and 6 rebounds before he fouled out.
Although Drew’s shooting slump continued – he was 2-for-7 – he helped hold Wildcats freshman point guard Brandon Knight (15 points) to 1-for-6 shooting in the second half. Carolina also only had three second-half turnovers, and the junior’s calm was key, as he showed the experience that the freshman class has yet to go through in tight games.
“One of the things I do on planes is when it starts shaking, I look to the flight attendants, and if they’re freaking out, I’m freaking out,’’ Drew said. “But if they don’t, and they’re calm and relaxed, then I’m like – OK, they’ve been through this. So I’m sort of like the flight attendant, in a sense, when things are getting heated, and it’s getting close – if my teammates look to me, and I’m relaxed and poised, then they know they’re going to be ready to do anything.”
That attitude will be key for the Tar Heels, as they continue to try to improve their shooting (1-for-11 from 3-point land) and cohesiveness. And while the freshmen continue to improve, the juniors made one thing clear with their performance: right now, they are the best leaders.
“I think everybody plays a role, and each game, it might change,’’ Zeller said. “But the upperclassmen did make plays today.”

My early nominations- Scott Wood and Tyler Zeller.
T-Rex Zeller

After listening to multiple Gus Johnson orgasms after every single bucket by Carolina, we get the mumbled comment, "He's only a sophmore" after Henson air-balled two free throws. Classic announcer bias...you really can't make this stuff up. At least Kellogg was there to keep Gus in check a couple times...hope somebody else was able to pick up on that humor.
UNC did some good things today, but I think they were very fortunate to get the win. Kentucky is good, but they certainly aren't the 10th best team out there right now (I don't think most people would argue that after their loss to UConn). UK had several opportunities to put this game away, but it looked like their inexperience prevented them from doing so. Kentucky's youngsters will probably learn a lot from their first road game today, and they will unfortunately get better (nobody wants to root for Calipari). Henson and Zeller looked pretty good, but that was expected. I'm surprised UNC won...I thought all the fans were saying that they wouldn't win until "KMar" was runnning the point. Anybody change their mind about Drew II? Or do you guys still think he should be sitting on the bench at the start of the game? Just curious.
Now hoping that State can keep the scoreboard respectable in a couple hours here.
Max
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 18:08 — unc098As I said , my lengthy analysis never made it past the cutting board of the preview, but I did eat some crow on the KMAR/D2 issue. D2 was far and away the better pg today. He particularly played a good second half. Good anaylsis in general. I am hoping this will be a confidence builder. Good things happen when you play 40 minutes of solid defense.
Nice analysis
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 16:31 — Heels20Zeller and Henson were huge for us and I thought Roy coached an excellent game. It's the first time I can remember him ever using all five timeouts, and I think he used all of them well. It wasn't Larry's worst game, but it wasn't his best. Marshall was AWFUL today, but that's just growing pains for a freshman passer going against guys with tremendous athletic ability.
I didn't see this win coming at all. Max, you're dead on when you point out Kentucky's inexperience as a big factor in this game. Henson played great defense on Terrence Jones, and you could tell Jones was becoming more and more frustrated as the game progressed. Kentucky looked a lot better from the perimeter than they did last season, so it was crucial that we not give them much down low. By the way, when did Cal's teams learn to start shooting free throws?
There are a lot of things we still need to work on, but I'm happy to say that the necessary level of effort was there. Barnes needs to start taking better shots, Bullock needs to gain some confidence and we need to shoot nothing but free throws for about 5 hours a day.
Good win today. Let's keep 'em coming.
Just lost my very lengthy
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 18:02 — unc098Just lost my very lengthy analysis but you said enough for the two of us . Great win and Zeller just played like we have all expected him to play. All the perimeter players need to take better shots
Great defensive effort. If this team continues to do what they did today defensively they will continue to win. As I said before its the only way this team will win if they continue to shoot as abysmally as they are.
There was an intensity of effort today that has been missing and they maintained it the entire game and finished very strong.
Great win
Uk fan beside me
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 16:48 — gvillegatr... Said Jones was easily the best player on UK's team and the Heels handled him very well today. Talk all the crap you want to (and I will) when they don't play defense, but they played some in the 2nd half ... especially when they went n2 the half court! Recognize the good as well !
Prove me wrong, Heels!!
talk about cheating
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 15:17 — PuddentainAt 11:45 on the clock, the score was 55-51 Kentucky. Kentucky made a basket. The score was given to unc. 55-53
Lol
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 16:51 — gvillegatrI'm down in N Myrtle Beach (Overtime's) and sitting beside a UK fan from Salisbury ... I said the same thing! UNC is cheating.
Being funny of course, BUT I also thought the game was over at that point. UK had a couple o transition buckets and then the un Carolina like TO. Who'd a thought !?
Bc of foul trouble, UK had to go into a half court offense and that was that. UNC (Tyler Zeller) FINALLY made FT's and we played some defense.
I thought the victory was possible bc of UK's youth and it being a home game. Huge win and HOPEFULLY a game builder ....
Good day ( every day ) to be a Tar Heel fan ... Especially in the state of SC !!
PS: still was piss poor from the line and behind the arc ... I'm not that blind.
WAR EAGLE !

Sat, 12/04/2010 - 15:20 — mad_maxDude, that happens all the time. The score was corrected by the time they came back from commercials.
If you want to talk about charging/blocking calls or about 3 seconds in the key, then yeah, we can discuss why Jamie Lucky was allowed to ref this game. But really, you're complaining about a common scoreboard error? C'mon now...
Whoops, my bad.
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 15:24 — PuddentainI didn't think they had, but checked again and you're correct
