UNC to start Yates again

Bookmark and Share

Citing T.J. Yates' experience as a starter and a sense that he's making progress, UNC football coach Butch Davis says that the sophomore quarterback, and not Cameron Sexton, will start again when the Tar Heels face Duke at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.

Yates, who returned to the lineup after missing six weeks because of a broken ankle, struggled with his mechanics in a 41-10 home loss last weekend to N.C. State. But after two days of practice, a chance to study the game film and consult with his staff, Davis decided Yates is ready. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound passer completed 10 of 22 passes for 116 yards and no touchdowns against State, threw an interception and was sacked three times, still looking a little gimpy.

Sexton, a 6-1 junior, replaced Yates after three quarters and was 4-of-6 for 31 yards and two interceptions.

I agree with gvillegatr

THIS IS THE RIGHT DECISION BY FAR. You don't lose your job to an injury. There was a reason Yates beat Sexton out the last two seasons as starter. He is bigger, sees the field better, has a more grand arm, and has more of an upside. Sexton, by himself, lost us 2 games this season and messed up a third. A healthy Yates, I believe, would not have thrown those late interceptions against Virginia and Maryland; would have beaten VTech; and would have generated more O against NCSU (a HEALTHY Yates). He is a pro-style QB and we need him to get reps in this game and to regain his footing in time for the Bowl game.

Sexton is a "play not to lose" choice. Yates is a "play for the future of our program/to win" choice. Don't get lost in the wave of stupid stats and recent results, which don't even reflect the QB as much as the rest of the team. Sexton is not that good.

Hey gvillegatr--can I get the chance to compete for your depth chart? I think I can beat out Sexton.

Are you kidding me?  First

Are you kidding me?  First of all Sexton didn't even play in the Virginia Tech game.  What are the 3 games Sexton either lost or messed up? He lost 2 games at the very end.  You really think Yates who may have an arm but can't scramble if his life depended on it would have the record Sexton did?  You say Yates can see the field but can he escape a sack?  Let's see.  Sexton may not have the profile of an NFL QB but he was winning and the team was used to him and were playing good.  The whole season came down to the State game and Davis is going to "play for the future"?  What a crock! The State Game was a joke.  Like I said Sexton lost 2 games at the end at least we were in position to win, you can't say that for Yates record.

you most certainly can compete.  i'll update my chart.  those things change day-by-day anyway!

You and I think a lot alike when it comes to Sexton.  He simply hasnt played well since the Miami game.  He plays "not to lose" and has no confidence IMO.  thats a pretty harsh assesment, but it is what I see.  He simply never recovered from the UVa game.

Let's see Butch Davis

Let's see Butch Davis says he is using the whole body of work to help make his QB decision, well I beieve 5-2 (Sexton) is > than 6-10 (Yates). Can you name a Quality win by Mr. Yates--Duke in OT at Kenan in 2007! What personal decision has worked this year-Paulus as the backup-NO lose to VT; how about Barth at placekicker (walk-on with no D-1 offers) over Wooton (offer from LSU, Fla, Clemson) --No lost to Maryland (that kick looked like a friday night kick not a kick to help a team get to the championship game). Then UNC's Chemisty Major Mr Davis creates a QB compition during State week--- Well the chemisty experiment blow up in his face. Has he lost his team-- players know who should be starting!!! OH I forgot Sexton was ahead by 4 points with 1:30 left in the UVA game and coaching lost that game so Cam really was 6-1 and that is > than 6-10. Mad scotland co fan GO DUKE!!!

More bitter

Just think how much more bitter you are going to be Saturday afternoon.

if I were coach

1.) Yates (short leash)

2.) Paulus

3.) Me

4.) UNC1998

5.) Tarheelvp91

6.) JPDOhio

7.) Sexton

Two words to make my case...

George Blanda.

4th string?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, gvillegatr. I do have some eligability left if the Heels need me to hold the clipboard.

If I drop down in the depth chart any more....

I demand to be released so that I can transfer elsewhere!

actually...

I think if you guys lose, you may get even more recruits. What we'll find out for sure is if BD really knows how to manage the egos of essentially young men. This is something that Amato did not seem to have a handle on and it appeared absent last week.

I would also be willing to hazard a guess that as Sexton kind of floundered at UMd, he may have been looking over his should a bit. UMd was very uncanny for Sexton over this little stretch.

I've come to the conclusion

that it's basically 6 of one or one half dozen of the other. Neither is all that mobile. It was said Yates had a stronger arm, but it sure wasn't last week. I'm the first to admit that I'm just a fan, and all I want is a win vs. Duke. I'll not agree with Tudor. Paulus probably isn't the answer. Yates was looking really good before his injury. There's nothing to say he won't get back to that form. I think all of the players will have a chip on their shoulder come Saturday. The coaches have something to show, too. Namely, that their team hasn't regressed. I'm confident both will come through on Saturday. Go Heels!
