UNC signs 25 in highly-rated class

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina coach Butch Davis stood in front of the podium this afternoon with a look of satisfaction on his face.

"Today was a very good day," Davis said at his news conference to announce the Tar Heels' 2011 class on national signing day.

Rivals.com has ranked North Carolina's class No. 3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels signed 10 players on offense, 14 on defense and kicker/punter Miller Snyder of Charlotte.

The Tar Heels got a big signing day commitment from McKeesport (Pa.) defensive tackle Delvon Simmons, who's rated the No. 80 player in the class by rivals.com.

They accomplished the strong class despite an NCAA investigation into the program that caused 14 players to miss at least one game and seven to miss the entire season in 2010. North Carolina officials have said they don't know how or when the NCAA will rule on possible sanctions for the program.

But Davis said athletic director Dick Baddour researched similar cases in the past and what the sanctions might be and shared his findings with parents of prospects who were concerned.

"First and foremost, we were always honest with the kids we recruited," Davis said. ". . .We never tried to paint a picture of things that weren't realistic."

I'm not that familiar with how things go for dirty football programs in recruiting, but I imagine the main impact is for the year after the news gets out - like how there's usually a one-year delay in how a season influences recruiting.

Curious if the so-called chancellor or some trustees were present to do a dance routine with pom-poms. UNC has the only chancellor or trustees I have ever heard express concern about football recruiting. I guess that's how it goes at outlaw programs like UNC.

Davis' claim that the school was open with recruits about what sanctions might be directly contradicts what many recruits have been quoted as saying - which is that Davis or his staff told them there'd be no serious sanctions. I'm also interested in this quote: "athletic director Dick Baddour researched similar cases in the past" - WHAT similar cases? Can anybody name a case since SMU when double-digit players were suspended for part of the season and multiple players have been permanently banned from play by the NCAA? Not saying UNC's situation is as bad as SMU's or that the penalty will be that severe, but I'd really be curious what Baddour's frame of reference was.

The Florida State's entire AD was caught cheating in a particular class which included a lot of football players. They missed some games just like the UNC guys and that was that. Also, a few were kicked off just like at UNC. No loss of scholly's. No missed bowl games. The individual players were dealt with on a personal basis just like at UNC.

You guys are in for one big, fat disappointment. IMO, some scholly's may be taken away . That's it.

One thing all the other fan bases need to realize is while UNC has had some good recruiting classes, none have been better than this one I do not think. Add the controversy of the past year and that "ain't" too shabby. The rest of you, in your own little circle jerk, have to be scratching your heads.

While this year's class is a good one, esp. considering the circustances (negative recruiting), I do not think it is the best, 2007 for example was number 5 or 6 (top 10 anyway, IIRC).

....it's ridiculous to hear about either being a football school. Neither is.

That said, the closest this state comes to a traditional SEC-style football-school Saturday gameday every year is the atmosphere the one day each year that NCSU & ECU play each other. Not because of program quality (usually one or both suck) but because it's the only day each year that two in-state schools meet who clearly emphasize their football programs over their basketball programs.

that determined the overall records would start from the beginning and fail to mention the fact that UNC Cheat recruited football players long before NC State did and that is a big factor in the lopsided overall records. It's easy to leave out the facts when it makes your team look better. So starting back 25 years ago when both schools were recruiting football players is makes a lot of sense. So over the last 25 years NC State has a winning record against the holes. I am sure you knew that when you spouted off about the overall dominance and I'm sure you knew that NC State had a winning record at Kennan Stadium.

Let me get this straight. Way back in the dark ages when UNC was recruiting and State wasn't and UNC won, those wins didn't count. So now in the present when UNC is recruiting and State isn't and State wins 4 games, that means that they are the superior team because they beat UNC with club players, yet had only 1 winning season, all the while losing to Dook and ECU.

Got it. No matter who recruits superior athletes, State will always win because it is a part of "their culture".

1. The record is basically even since the ACC started over 50 years ago. Over half of those wins came when ncsu only had a club team and wore leather helmets. To claim that unc owns the wolfpack shows just how little you know.

3. Of the 4 seasons they have been here, BD only has a better record in 2 of them, 08 and 09. In 08 we put a savage beating on unc, @unc.

You should be more concerned with who your center is than if Glennon is any good. Wilson's mobility was a huge factor in his success against UNC. Glennon could be the second coming of Peyton Manning, but if his O-line is getting beat like a rented mule it won't do a darn bit of good.

then why are the newspapers suing them to release all of the coaches emails and parking ticket records for the players. If there was nothing there, they would have released them in a second instead of hiring lawyers with black sharpie pens to redact any incriminating info before they give them to the media.
