ATLANTA — For the second straight season, North Carolina is the unanimous No.1 selection in the ACC's preseason basketball poll.
The Tar Heels received all 40 first-place votes Sunday in the annual poll of media members who cover the conference.
Duke was second in the poll, followed by Wake Forest, Miami, Clemson and Virginia Tech. Here is the complete poll, with voting totals in parentheses:
North Carolina senior center Tyler Hansbrough, who was the consensus national player of the year last season, was the unanimous selection as preseason player of the year.
Boston College guard Tyrese Rice joined Hansbrough as a unanimous preseason All-ACC selection. Miami guard Jack McClinton, North Carolina guard Ty Lawson and Duke wing Gerald Henderson also were All-ACC selections.
Wake Forest freshman forward Al-Farouq Aminu was voted the preseason rookie of the year. He received 18 votes — 14 more than his nearest competitor, Virginia's Sylven Landesberg.
Ken Tysiac has covered the ACC for The Charlotte Observer since 2003, and spent the previous eight years covering Clemson for the Anderson Independent-Mail and then The State in South Carolina. He grew up in Rochester, N.Y., and is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

Smells Like A '57 to Me
Tue, 10/28/2008 - 00:17 — E. A. Powell (not verified)Think I'll just sit back and watch Duke lose to The Heels before they walk on court, and uh, how's about "McRoy's Miracle?" I got this warm, fuzzy feeling for all the ABCers: After Carolina goes UNDEFEATED this year, well, to hate like THAT would make "yooz guys" happy forever, eh? Thus, here's to your eternal BLISS!!! OR another way of perceiving this emotional state could be, "if it makes you happy, why the hell are you so sad?" I also hope The Pack surprises everybody--even a "bleed the only true blue alumnus" could swallow that loss. Wowie. But actually, I think State takes Duke. Hmm. Hate on that!

Tue, 10/28/2008 - 20:03 — Anonymous (not verified)Excellent, E.A. As a Pack fan, I envy youz guys over in Chapel Hill. But, heck, red is red and blue is blue. Kinda like blue blood over there. I hope your team does go all the way, cuz they are dynamite (HOO WAH), and I hope the Pack can win some they aren't supposed to. It won't be until Lee retires that the Pack MAYBE will be back in the race (with a new A.D. bringing in a real coach). So I will tip my glass to youz guys and watch the Heels kit arse in the meantime. Cheers!
It will be tough for any
Mon, 10/27/2008 - 18:28 — Anonymous (not verified)It will be tough for any team to beat the Heels this year. What I can't understand is why the Wolfpack is not predicted to finish last!! They lost their last 9 games last year, lost their best player, Sidney doesn't know how to motivate, and they still have chemistry problems. UGH!
North Carolina Could Win Regular Season Undefeated?
Mon, 10/27/2008 - 10:53 — Sadac Israel (not verified)I think that this year the ACC has three teams other than Duke, that could go a long way in making it very hard for UNC to just run through the ACC even with all their talent and experience, Look for Wake Forest and Clemson to make some noise in the ACC and out of conference. Chapel Disappointment
Mon, 10/27/2008 - 10:03 — Anonymous (not verified)Ohh you poor Carolina fans always thinking that we well win it all. I think that is great to have such a positive attitude but in reality you are just setting yourself up for more disappointment. You will probably win the ACC and get your #1 see in the Tourny but alas you will meet your demise. Roy can't win with his players last time I checked he won with Matt's recruits, you know the ones who cried and ran him out of town.
Prepare to be a Champion...
Mon, 10/27/2008 - 20:19 — UNCAlumnusThat's how the players do it, so I'll just enjoy the season (and all of it's successes)
I guess it's Title or bust...
Sun, 10/26/2008 - 18:41 — UNCAlumnusUNC will start, and probably finish number one. I'd like to see them set up goals like, don't lose at home, win ACC as an undefeated champion, number one seed in NCAA, Final Four, Championship. I'm interested in seeing how the freshmen fit in. I think this year's back up point might end up being better than last year's. We'll just have to wait and see. Once again, hope springs eternal. Don't give up before the season starts, everyone.
UNC will lose once to Duke,
