UNC notes: Gary has Roy's number, again

Bookmark and Share

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Gary Williams recorded his 19th victory as Maryland's coach over a top-5 opponent via Saturday’s 88-85 overtime victory against No. 3 UNC.

Five have come against Roy Williams — two at Kansas, three at North Carolina. According  to Patrick Stevens’ Washington Times blog, that means Ol’ Roy has almost caught Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has lost to Gary-coached Maryland when the Blue Devils were ranked in the top 5.

More notes:

NO FIFTH YEAR FOR FRASOR: UNC senior guard Bobby Frasor said the NCAA has denied his final appeal for a fifth year of eligibility. He was trying to get another season after missing most of last year because of knee surgery.

LOTS OF SHOTS: Roy Williams said he’d like to look at the game film before assessing whether point guard Ty Lawson was forcing his shot against the Terps. The junior had a career-high 20 shot attempts; he made eight.

"The shots I did shoot I think were open shots except for one,’’ Lawson said. “but other than that I don't feel I forced any shots."

WHERE ARE THE FREEBIES? UNC forward Tyler Hansbrough — known for drawing fouls and hitting free throws — made 3 of 4 free throws on Saturday, marking the fifth straight game the senior has attempted a single-digit number of foul shots.

Last season, he attempted 13.7 free throws per game.

“I haven’t really pinpointed anything, necessarily, with why I’m not going to the line,’’ he said. “Maybe it’s me.

Asked if it’s a concern, he said: "No, I'm not concerned about that right now. I just want to win ball games."

Ref School

Oh yeah and officiating is some good extra money.

3 in 7!

What a week for Carolina on the down side of their schedule and finish with a lost at Maryland. Last Sunday Started in Miami and end on Saturday at College Park. That's a lot miles in 7 seven days. Who made this schedule? I'm sure it's been revised for a ABC Television crew. I could tell the starters was running out of gas in the last few minutes in Maryland. They look good in the 30 minutes of the game. Another 10 minutes like the first 30 minutes would have made them no. 1 this week. What a week for Carolina 3 games in 7 days. Manys miles in the air and need only another 10 minutes of energy to finish off Maryland. Any coach would accept 2 of 3 games because it better than 1 of 3 and 0 of 3 for the week. Get Ready..!!!! Exam week is getting close....Get Ready....!!! Need some back up. Get ready...!!!!

Are you serious PHCQMFD?

BTW, could you please add one more letter to your sign on name? I dont know what your smoking but pass it to JAvi. Do you honestly think Roy, Mike and Dean are bad coaches? I'd hate to see what you said about Tiger Woods, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, MOses Malone the list goes on. I do agree we need to quit blaming the refs we should have never been in that position to begin with. But talking smack about three of the greatest coaches in College Basketball history makes me believe either, you've been in Dorothea Dix Hospital for 10 years or you're 9 years old. Do you think the maestro Valvano never worked the refs or went on rants? Oh by the way your boy Sid is a owner in the downtown restaurant that our taxes when to pay for. Hecka of guy that Sid. While in Europe say hello to the rest of Dookies team minus Boozer. Oh yeah and if you need a new mortgage call your allstar Corchiani.

Heels still cant read

It is a shame that you still did not learn to read.  Where did I say he was a poor coach.  I implyed that he did less with more than any other coach.

All-Americans - 26

Final 4s - 11

Titles - 2

Wonder if anyone did less with more

Good Coach who only sealed the deal twice.  Jon Wooden with less talent won many more - great coach.  Bobby Knight with even less talent won more - great coach.  The only less with more that compares with Dean is ol Roy or maybe Coach K.

BTW you heels fans are so easy to rile up

Joke

Well like Wooden stated their is 10xs more parody in college.  No one will do what Wooden did so to compare any coach to him is silly, stupid and someone reaching.  Since the tourney is 1 and done it takes talent, peaking at the right time and heart to win the NCAA.  It is 1 and done... all it takes is a 1 bad game to send you home.  Some coaches coach for decades with talent and never win one.

I remember some ex-coach on TV talking about how ignorant people were who used to say Dean Smith should have won more championships with his talent.  The reason being is during his era no one lost more players early to the draft during most of his coaching years.  He never would lie to his players about their draft status which was the common practice in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's before other sources were made available.  During that time players had to have coaches do research for them.  Dean always did the right thing with that.

Coach Smith

you cant correlate all-americans with national titles in his era or for any coach in that era.  a decent amt of his time on the bench, you could only make the tournament if you won your conference championship.

it must have pained you to go look and find all that great information though!  on behalf of all UNC fans, we thank you!

Refs

Man you tar heels kill me. I watch you get every call against duke and nc state and all is well. The last state game was not that close but when even your radio announcers are complaining that you are getting ever call, it surprises me.

UNC has one problem, the coach. ol Roy learned to choke at the feet of a master, Dean Smith. It is amazing that ol Roy could win one with Matt D. players but can win one with his own. Matt D. had fire, but the thugs he recuited wanted him run off. (Thanks McCants)

I always attributed Dean's lack of titles to his poor in game coaching. He was the best practice coach ever..  His players were always great fundmentally.   In the ACC, Carolina normally would, and still, gets just about every call. Then the NCAA tourn comes and they don't get the benefit of the doubt, and hense dont know how to handle it. If more calls went against them in the regular season they would learn how, play when the refs were against them.

Even if you did not like Dean, which I did not, I was impressed the way he ran his program. No foul language, no lip, no pouting, etc. And he even managed to not recuit thugs and punks.

Coach K could always give Bobby Knight a run for his money with the poor language, it is good to see that ol Roy is moving on up. Man I hope Sid does not follow in these guys foot steps.

BTW tell that punk Hansbourgh that the NBA will not put up with crying about the ref especially when they have no jump shot, so he can say hi to jules hodge in Europe for me.

coaching??

Just a FYI...
Arizona State is 21-5 this week and ranked 11th. Don't talk about coaching.

Dean's lack of titles? You mean the 2 National Titles and numerous ACC titles? How many does Valvano,Robinson,Sendek or Lowe have combined???

give me one example

where Tyler has whined about a call against him.  i'll save you the trouble, its never happened!  he doesnt even as much change his facial expression when he gets whistled.

drug use

It's obvious that phcqmfd is on something illegal and too much of something legal... or both.  Tyler will be in the NBA and anyone who knows one ounce about basketball knows that.  Ignorant people talk about Doherty like they know what the heck they are talking about.  With a little bit of research they would realize that the same complaints were made about Doherty by his players at Notre Dame.  So is it all the players?  No genius it's him... he has an issue that he stated that he needed to get help for.  Sounding like a bitter State fan... don't worry I would be bitter if I was a State fan as well.  Keep hope alive!

Good God WB91

Write it in your autobiography for christs sake. And GMonet 46 please oh please bring up the F$&k, Mother F89K, Son of a B96tch MF, one more time so these morons at the N&O can write another story about it. Why don't you tell Blackbeard not to have tirades, or any other athlete/coach in the free world of sports.

Points

echll, sorry there were points that had to be made.  I will do it again if the time arises... deal with it.

Good points

One good thing that might come out of this is that even some press not all but some press in this area (DC area) is talking about the terrible officiating. This should definitely bring some attention to the directions that the games are being called.

Refs

I rarely blame the refs for contributing to the outcome of the game but the refs were on something this game. First and foremost they are definitely listening to the complaints that Tyler gets to many fouls but they have gone overboard just like last year just before the ACC tourney when Tyler went like 2 games without hitting a foul shot when the coaches complained and they did that write up in the paper. I DVR'd that game and there are 3 calls that really stood out to me. The first and most glaring one was I believe with 1:35 to go and UNC had a 6 point lead Maryland was trying to foul. I live in the DC area and one of the guards stated they were told to go for the steal but if you don't get it and he dribbles up court foul. Green throws it into Tyler, Tyler gives it to Lawson they tried to catch him they missed 2 defenders converge on him and as Lawson tries to split them they run smack into him and knock him down. There is no call the ball is loose Maryland gets it, scores, cut the lead down to 4. The next play they get the ball in the same way this time they grab at Lawson to try to stop the clock (this could have gone either way) Lawson and Tyler run down court, Lawson in the middle Tyler to his left. Lawson dishes it to Tyler, he drives to the basket... stops just short of the Maryland defender. The defender goes straight up and doesn't get the block but Tyler never leans in... not in the slightest. The defender falls back to get the charge another defender comes over Tyler's back to block the shot. He hits him in the head. The ref calls charging on Tyler. When it was shown on replay the defender is so far underneath the backboard when he falls that the only part of him on the court is his ankles on down. This play happened just to the left of the goal underneath the back board. This should have been a no call on the initial defender and Tyler and a foul on the defender from behind. The last issue I have is the fact that they are blantantly was overdueing not calling fouls for Tyler.

Now all that being said UNC put themselves in a situation where the refs could steal the game from them. What I found to be very interesting was that Maryland fans up here actually agreed. A lot of my buddies who are Maryland fans said," I got to admit we definitely got some home-cooking that game". They said, "but you guys put yourselves in that situation" and I couldn't agree more. The refs may have helped Maryland steal the game but UNC gave them the ladder propped up next to the window.

I used to only condone a coach submitting a formal complaint to the Referee Association only if the refs cost the team a game against a superior opponent or an even aopponent... also in a tourney game. I think Roy should do it in this game only to bring attention to the total lopsided treatment Tyler is getting. I don't want him to have special treatment... just fair. Coach K has done it a couple of times and it ended in refs being suspended. I don't care whether they get suspended or not as long as they call the game fair. Ref responsibility in the game 15%.. and UNC 85%.

deaf ears

I've made the exact complaints on the Ty Lawson "lost" ball with 136 to play and Hansbroughs charge where the defender behind him hacks the hell out of him. no one cares and you will get no sympathy from the opposition!

fatc of the matter is, if Roy gets off his ass and puts the regulars back in the game (he took them out with a 16 or 18 pt lead) before it gets to 8 pts, we prolly put it to them. the "mo" was gone and the game too.

Refs and Guards Blow Game

I am a big UNC fan and the Refs have certainly turned their heads this year whenever Tylers getting killed inside. I have even had good friends who are Duke and NCSU fans tell me the same thing. However, if you look at UNCs loses it all comes down to who is guarding the opponent's guards ... Players, even the best do not score 30 points with someone in their face. Our guards are great at running offense but it takes good defense to win games also. Bottom line, I think it is a combination of Tyler getting killed on the inside and our Guards poor defensive play. Two things, Roy should be in the Refs face even if he gets a technical (Coach K wouldn't put up with it) and also demand better defense by our Guards.

It's in the water!

Carolina Panthers are noted for choke syndrome in the "should have won" catagory...and Carolina is not much different...Williams should halt his expletive tirades and get back to getting his players ready for EVERY game. He and John Fox must read from the same book!

First they say...

Ty Lawson doesn't look for his shot nearly enough. Now, after this game, they say he took too many shots. Well, attempting as many as he did is at least partially the result of your teammates being covered, right? He still needs to look for his shot; when he does, it adds another dimension to our offense. I guess our lesson learned from this one is that when we have a team down, when we start clamping down with perimeter "d", we can't let up. As I said before, I seriously doubt we're going to get burned by a comeback from 16 down like that one again this year. It's a pride thing.

Carolina loss

It was deju vu all over again; I hope Roy reads these blogs. Whatever call were or were not made; IF YOU HAVE A NINE POINT LEAD WITH AROUND TWO MINUTES LEFT, YOU USE THE CLOCK. WE DIDN'T. I am a tarheel fan, a big one, and I don't mind losing (although I don't like it), but if the coach did not tell the players to use the clock, he lost the game. People argue that a team should not "change" their game even with a lead. Well if you don't, this is what happens. I noticed when Gary had the lead, he used the clock. We will not win the national championship if we don't and with the guys we have on the court, we should. We can shoot free throws, we have spurts on non shooting, use the clock and make them foul us. It is very elementary, in my opinion.

Gary Williams certainly can coach 'em up for Goliath.

I just like to think that the coach draws it up and the players execute it. That said, Roy Williams has probably been in this situation before. He probably drew up something pretty nice. The veteran UNC team did not execute. It happens, and hopefully everybody will learn from it. They have proven once again that they have the same old issues.

I think you are giving Ol'

I think you are giving Ol' Roy too much credit

How so?

Ol' Roy has coached a lot of victories. Some with really talented teams, and some with so-so teams. To say he's not a good coach is to ignore past events.

choking in the last two minutes

Let's face it, winning at Maryland is not easy for any team, not with Gary Williams coaching. But, neither coach was on the floor the last two minutes as UNC blew a 9 point lead! Ok, make it 6 as they failed to guard the three all half! But, the poor clock management, poor floor spacing against the press, poor decisions to dribble through a triple team, and a poor decision by Lawson to feed Hansbrough to go up in conjestion and hope no charge is called when freezing the clock made more sense, all lead to rookie mistakes and not decisions by seasoned smart players!

your point is moot

if the refs call the foul on maryland when Ty Lawson "lost" the ball at the 1:36 mark off the in bounds and it ultiamtely made the game a 4 pt game.  then the charge call against Hansbrough when the guy going up with him hacked the crap out of him.  another 8 on 5 performance.  we are becoming all to familiar ... just this time the Heels lost.

someone send me a link on how I can sign up for referee school!!

Ref School

gvillegatr, I have been to ref school and it is pretty fun.  It gives you a different perspective when looking at the game.  It does make you look at the game with more critical eyes.  It is also fun to talk about calls and things and really know what you are talking about. LOL

No excuses..

But if you think those striped men called a good game on either side your blind as well.

tyler h

i think they are hiding the full effect tyler h.'s injury as shown in his apparent lack of quickness and slower first step and rebound reactions in comparison to the three previous seasons.

refs excuse again???

The refs didn't blow a 16 pt lead in the second half. The game should have been over at that point. Let it rest. Just a choke job by the Heels, thats all.

whatever

Big Perm, you know it can be both... you can't be that narrow-minded and blind.  UNC definitely shouldn't have been in that position from jump street, however they lost the lead and it is still the officials job to call a good and responsible game no matter what.

So did UNC choke?  Yeah for lack of a better term.  Did the refs help the fate of UNC?  Heck yeah.  I generally consider choking when someone is scared and they play that way and loose a lead.  UNC never looked panicked... they looked like...  oh well they are trying to come back but we will seal it in the end like we always do.  This attitude contributed the most to the lost.  I believe in killing an ant with a sledge-hammer.  I believe in making the game out of reach as early as possible.  I think you should punish them so bad early on that they question whether they are in the right sport.

As a Tarheel Fan....

1. When Gary Williams lowered (or elevated) himself to chest bumping...well...I knew it was over from that point...2. Another year for Frasor would only prolong the agony every time he heaves a shot...3. When no one but Lawson moves with or without the ball what other option does he have but to shoot or drive...4. and YES I may be a little biased as a Heel fan but come on...Psycho T as well as other post players are getting completely hammered in the lane. Only 4 charities against the slappy scrappy Terps! Wow! ACC refs (watch them run) have let it get way out of hand.... They have no idea what a charging fouls is..cant count to three..or five..and have no clue what a moving screen is (or was)! Will they ever retire!

Sometimes....

....'tis better to be a Terps fan....living in North Carolina....than it is to get lucky in Vegas. How sweet it is!!!!  Stevo....Pinetops, NC

That's about it...

Although I dig Maryland a lot... this quite possibly might be it for Maryland.  In recent years they always come up with a big win here and there but ACC magic... nothing... NCAA magic... nothing.  UNC beat them without much effort at all in Chapel Hill.  The game in Maryland is a prime example of taking an opponent to lightly and getting smacked for it.
