UNC notes: Bad day for Sexton

Bookmark and Share

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — North Carolina quarterback Cameron Sexton said his performance during his team’s 17-15 loss at Maryland on Saturday “was easily the worst football game I’ve played this year; it will probably go down as one of my worst.”

Sexton completed only 10 of his 24 passes, fumbled the ball in the first half and tossed an interception on No. 17 UNC’s final offensive play of the game.

Immediately after the game, the junior had few answers.

“I played poorly today, I didn’t play well, and we win and lose as a team and it’s a team effort, but as the quarterback of this football team, I have a big weight of responsibility, I think,’’ he said. “And I left so much on the field, I played a poor game, I never got in a rhythm, I just was off. I don’t know how to explain. It wasn’t my day today; I have to play better than that for us to win.”

MORE TIME?:  With about two minutes left, officials in the booth overturned a call on the field, saying a pass from Maryland’s Chris Turner to Torrey Smith on the 1-yard line was incomplete. By then, the clock had wound quite a ways down, and even after the game, UNC coach Butch Davis said he didn’t think enough time was put back on it.

“I was going to challenge the call, because I didn’t think he had caught it,’’ coach Butch Davis said. “And then we were arguing that there should have been 25 seconds put back on the clock, but I think they only put eight on.”

In the end, the time left was probably moot. The Terps kicked a field goal after the overturned call, and although UNC got the ball back with 1:36 left instead of 17 seconds more, Sexton tossed an interception with 49 seconds left — with plenty of time still on the clock.

A FIRST: Wide receiver Cooter Arnold's 59-yard grab in the first quarter marked the first touchdown of his career.

Correction

UNC wide receiver James "Cooda" Arnold scored the touchdown. His name is NOT Cooter.

me and a buddy were watching

me and a buddy were watching the game when that call had happened and I immediatley said, stop the clock at 2:19. never did. but, it was moot. so be it.

sexton, I paid money to come see the Heels next/this week. Butch, put Yates in, although the conference is over for us.
