UNC-Michigan State: 5 things to watch

Bookmark and Share

Just one win separates North Carolina from its second NCAA title in five seasons and the realization of a lifetime goal for seniors Tyler Hansbrough and Danny Green.

Here are five things to watch in the championship game as the Tar Heels meet Michigan State at 9:21 p.m. Monday:

1. The pace. Michigan State got Kalin Lucas, Chris Allen and Durrell Summers out on the fast break to speed past Connecticut in an 82-73 win in the NCAA semifinals. Lucas said he wants to do the same thing against North Carolina.

"I want to push the ball up the floor every time," he said. "We have some good wing players that can really run, and bigs that can get up and down the floor as well. . . .It's going to be a track race."

The Spartans had better hope it's not so much of a track meet, because they don’t have anybody fast enough to keep up with North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson. If there's a wide-open opportunity to run for an easy basket, Michigan State needs to take it. But it would be a mistake for the Spartans to just run for the sake of running.

2. Hansbrough vs. Suton. North Carolina center Tyler Hansbrough should be strong enough to overwhelm Michigan State's Goran Suton in the post.

Suton didn't play in the teams' first meeting because of a knee injury, but he is not an incredibly effective post defender. If he is going to hurt the Tar Heels anywhere, it will be when Michigan State has the ball.

"Suton I think is a guy that, you know, is capable of shooting the 15-foot jumper and is a pretty good shooter outside," Hansbrough said. "So it adds a little bit different aspect than some guys down low banging all the time. I understand he goes to the boards, is a good rebounder, but you also have to contest him outside."

3. Banging on the boards. Three times in the last four games, North Carolina has been outrebounded by its opponent.

That includes Saturday night's NCAA semifinal, when a smallish Villanova team posted a 53-48 rebounding advantage that worried the Tar Heels even though they won 83-69. Michigan State, which leads the nation in rebound margin at plus-9.4 per game, fought a huge Connecticut team to a 42-42 standstill on the boards.

"Every time I looked up, they're getting an offensive rebound," said North Carolina coach Roy Williams. "The announcer started saying, 'That's 14, 15, 16,' So it is a huge concern, but it's a concern any time you play Tommy's teams."

4. Spartans' depth. Injuries have prevented North Carolina's bench from being a strong point this season.

Michigan State, on the other hand, has outstanding depth. The Spartans got 33 points from their bench against Connecticut in the semifinals.

"When you can go 33 points off the bench, you're probably a very, very deep basketball team," said Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun.

5. Heels from three. North Carolina is shooting an astounding 46.3 percent from 3-point range in five NCAA Tournament games.

Danny Green, Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson all are over 40 percent, with Lawson hitting at a 60 percent clip. If the Tar Heels shoot better than 40 percent from 3-point range against Michigan State, it will be nearly impossible to defeat them because they do so many other things well.

The championship game

The championship game is very tight, thank you for this reminding.

A 'Lifetime goal' for Danny 'wish I was in the NBA' Green?

LMAO!!! Let's get real people. I absolutely believe Hansborough but to throw Green in that equation is RIDICKULOUS!

Michigan State Wins!

In Detroit the fans will be behind Michigan State. UNC is great at wearing teams down but I don't think they'll be able to tame the energy in the Big D. If not I'm going to need some Sleep Aid seriously. Nothing is going right in Michigan and this is where things change!

UNC WINS

I have a good basketball sense and I feel like it is UNC time to win. They have been trying 4 years with hansborough so you they want him to go out with a championship. I'm not really a fan of either team but I respect the game of basketball so much, that I don't care what team I'm watching as long as it's good basketball!

The Heels need

to use the bench anyways to keep things balance as usual. I heard that Michigan State bench is getting over 1/3 or more of the team points total. I think UNC bench is going to have stop the Michigan State Bench from scoring up when the starters not on the floor. I'm sure UNC got some players on the bench that can play defense. I hope things stay balance. Go Heels!!! Keep on MOOVVIINNNG!!!!

tar heel win

I predict another double digit Tar Heel win. This Tar Heel team wants this championship very badly and they will not be denied!! MSU is much better than when UNC met them in December, but the Tar Heels are MUCH better now than at any time this year. GO HEELS!!

BB Rituals

Hey Ole Roy isn't the only one with critical pre-game and game rituals.  We all have them and we know if we don't do them (and properly), they'll be dire results for UNC.  Dire if you are a UNC fan.  I've posted one of mine, and am interested in hearing about yours.

Track Meet?

Always be careful what you wish for, because it just may come true. If Lucas wants to push the ball up the court every time, advantage Tar Heels.

I hope both teams play at a high level. It is going to be a tough, competitive game. With wins over 2 Big East powers, the MSU team has to feel that they are a team of destiny. Although the Spartans are impressive, they have already experienced what UNC can do in terms of running the floor. If the Heels can maintain focus for 40 more minutes and play team ball at both ends, I like their chances. Go Heels!

Let's throw and Number 6 in

Let's throw a Number 6 in this mix too - Defense. Carolina has been playing very good defense in the tournament and while I expect them to do it again tonight, it is imperative that they do. I don't mean just perimeter defense but they need to clog the lane. MSU is ranked 260th in the country with just over 5 made three's per game so they may not shoot it from deep that often. The love to penetrate and look for offensive rebounds. Carolina will have to box out and crash the boards. Will also need to have that inside/outside game going good. Wouldn't be a good thing to have an off night from three point range in the championship. I know Carolina can score but they will need to bring that defensive urgency again and hit the boards!

UNC must get production from the big 3

Hansbrough, Ellington, Green. If Lawson lays in another 15 to 20 and Thompson gets 10 -12....It don't matter if MSU gets 40 from the bench, because they will still lose. I agree that UNC must, MUST box out and get rebounds. I noticed that too many times vs. Villanova UNC had one shot. There were few instances of offensive rebounds, except Frasor in the second half. Villanova often got a few chances on the offensive end. When the shot goes up find an MSU player and BOX OUT! If UNC is hitting the three point shots....warm up the fat lady.
