CHAPEL HILL – After North Carolina notched a less-than-inspiring 80-69 victory over UNC Asheville on Tuesday, coach Roy Williams’ locker room talk to his Tar Heels was a lot longer than usual.

“If I live through this team, I think we’re going to be a heck of a lot better by the end of the year,’’ he quipped during his post-game press conference. “And there is a big question as to whether I’m going to live through it.”

Led by junior Tyler Zeller’s career-high 23 points, No. 25 UNC (3-2) snapped a frustrating two-game losing streak. But in-so-doing, it showed again, that it has plenty more frustrations to work out.

The Tar Heels, playing their fourth game in six days, were too sloppy, recording 13 of their 19 turnovers by halftime. They still lacked the transition zip, and toughness in the lane, that Williams is searching for. They took questionable shots. And leading by as many as 22 points, they allowed the Bulldogs (3-2) to make it a game at the end.

“You can’t make those kinds of mistakes, take those kinds of shots,’’ Williams said. “We had fast breaks in the first half [where] we looked like we had never practiced the fast break in our life. But the frustration is on the defensive end. We’ve got two guys who are not freshmen, and our last play, where the [opponent] drives the baseline, and one guy says ‘I’m helping, I’m helping,’ and the other guy’s thinking he’s switching. Why would you think that? He didn’t talk Swahili, he talked English.”

After guard Matt Dickey gave UNC Asheville a 13-11 lead on a 3-pointer early, the Tar Heels turned the ball over four times and missed two additional shots. But the Bulldogs couldn’t convert on their opportunities, missing two free throws and at least five field goals of their own.

UNC freshman Harrison Barnes – who opened the game with a 3-pointer -- buried another one with 11:26 left in the first half, jump-starting a 15-4 run.

When Carolina took a 55-33 lead early in the second half on a Zeller hook shot, it looked as if the Tar Heels were finally going to run away with it. But then UNC started hoisting questionable shots, and missing stickbacks. Meanwhile, UNC-Asheville, which posted a 12-point comeback to beat Auburn earlier this month in overtime, started connecting.

Zeller hit a layup  with 6:27 left – officially setting a new career high by surpassing his 20-point tally against Vanderbilt on Sunday.  But UNC committed two turnovers and had a missed 3-pointer by point guard Larry Drew II, while UNCA buried two free throws, then got a made 3-pointer by J.P. Primm to cut the lead to 70-64 with about five minutes left.

“Our defense wasn’t great, at times, and we started letting them get good shots and gain confidence,’’ Zeller said. “But at the end of the game, I think we started making plays to pull it out.”

Indeed, with 3:45 left, forward Justin Knox scored on a goaltend to give UNC back a 72-64 cushion. With 3 minutes left, Zeller buried two more free throws to make it a double-digit game, again.

“If we had made a couple of free throws, made a couple of shots, it might have been fun at the end,’’ said Bulldogs coach Eddie Biedenbach. “But it didn’t turn out that way.”

Primm led UNC Asheville with 21 points.

Barnes chipped in 13 for the Tar Heels, who played without freshman Reggie Bullock, who sitting out because of a sore left knee.Sophomore  John Henson recorded his third double-double of the season, 10 points and 11 rebounds.

And Williams may be preparing for more long talks with his team in the days, and weeks, to come.

“We have a great deal of opportunities to learn from our mistakes,’’ he said.

UNC

I think the recent struggles of UNC's basketball team should really remind us of how small of a gap there is between being a mediocre team and being an elite team.  I know the Heels don't look very good right now, but you throw one or two key players in the mix and they could easily be an elite team.  I think some people have gotten spoiled around here after so many years of Duke and Carolina being able to stay at the top year in and year out.  Sometimes, you're just missing a piece of the puzzle.  But honestly, if UNC doesn't patch things up this year, then I'm sure they will get the puzzle put back together in the next couple years.

Not acceptable

UNC doesn't do mediocrity in baskets like so many other schools do.

Well, apparently they do.

Well, apparently they do.  I love that elitist attitude though.  Haha, you remind me of that record producer guy on South Park:  "I am above the law"!

It's your ...

Inferiority complex that always gets in the way, wuff pup max.

(twerps recover a fumble on an open field tackle on Graham.)

Not sure what's wrong with what he said

UNC doesn't accept mediocrity.  After an 8-20 season, most schools would be thrilled with 19-16 the following year.  At Carolina, Doherty was fired in that situation because the team was still mediocre and was looking at a stretch of mediocrity with Manuel, May and McCants all wanting to transfer.

Same thing at Kentucky.  Gillespie blew it in just three years and they went as far as selling their souls to the devil just to avoid becoming a consistently average program.

If Krzldjaflsdflkjas's successor at Dook can't continue the tradition of contending for a national title year in and year out, do you think they'll keep him around?

Too soon to give up on this year completely

I agree that this team has some gaping holes, but that doesn't mean that none of those holes will be filled throughout the season.  As all of you know, we have talent.  The question is whether or not we can utilize that talent in a way that produces the most wins possible.  We need to find the five guys with the best chemistry and we need to do it fast.  By doing so, the team can establish consistency in one line-up and those guys will improve throughout the year.  There are some things we can't fix, such as lack of depth and muscle in the post.  However, there are also things we can fix, such as leadership issues, poor perimeter play and finding the right floor general.

I agree that it is to early

I agree that it is to early to stick a fork in it. I truly would like to see D2 playing backup to KMAR. The only way this team is going to win games against superior opponents is playing fearsome defense and scoring points off of transition where they can use their speed and athleticism. That meas keeping teams off balance with withering D and keeping them from getting into their comfort zone offensively. Does this team have the ability to do this? Not sure given the present configuration.

Couldn't agree more

And the fact that Strickland is starting has been a big factor in our transition game.  The only issue is that he's just about the only one who has the speed and finishing ability to be effective on the fast break.

But

He is UNC's worse defender and when he is out on transition, he is more likely to turn the ball over or blow a lay-up.

I know that all of us ( Tar

I know that all of us ( Tar Heels ) are anxious to see our team return to some semblance of normalcy ie: competing for the top of the ACC and going forth into the NCAA tourney to compete for the national championship, but I agree that this team is in for another season like the past one and we might as well temper our expectations to that end. We just do not have the muscle in the paint to compete with many of the teams in the ACC and our newbies will take some time to get acclimated to the team. Given the talent level of the freshman, the one thing we can count on is that this team will improve as the season progresses. Injuries will determine what kind of season this team will have. The defection of the traitorous, gutless Wears and the lose of Graves has really set this team back. So lets sit back and enjoy the ride and wait until the following year and see what Roy can do in the way of recruiting.

Recruiting

I don't know if we can't get the type and caliber of players we got at one time but I think we simply do not have the talent to play at a very high level. We have no 'muscle' in the low post, or at least not enough to control the boards. We have a point guard but Drew is not of the caliber needed to have a great team...I think he does the best he can but unfortunately that is not good enough. We do not have a consistent perimeter offense capable of hitting the 3 and by doing so spreading the floor....And worst of all we do not have a leader on the floor...someone capable of motivating the other players. I wish Coach Williams and the team the best but I'm sorry to say we just don't have the players, the talent to play on a national stage.

agree

You are right on all accounts. But what I am optimistic about is the future. These guys are talented and athletic, but not "one and done" guys, even Barnes. So by staying and improving and then injecting future talent (and Coach Williams knows exactly what is needed, see previous championship team) we can cycle back around to the top, just give it time.

Tough year

A tough year may lay ahead no doubt. Step up the defensive intensity, aggressiveness, and confidence, that is the only way to improve on last year's let down.

Tough puzzle

Step one: Find the five most important pieces.

42 games and counting

Coach Williams' has been at this for two seasons now.  Until he looks in the mirror and says, "By golly, Drew II simply isn't the answer." he'll continue down this path and ultimately so will the Heels.

No leadership

Like I was saying over the weekend, it's gonna be another shaky year.

Drew needs to just sit and get spot duty while Marshall leads this team. While he may make mistakes at least he has confidence in himself.

Second, the Wears f@cked the Heels big time. They desperately need some more size down low.

Post play

Kentucky's bigs are going to murder us.  We'll be lucky to keep it within 30.

zeller

You guys better hope he stays healthy all year. With the lack of depth in UNC's frontcourt, I would suggest he is the player you can least afford to lose.

Indeed. If Zeller goes down

Indeed. If Zeller goes down it will be worse than last year. We are really missing Graves.

Lack of depth

Is an understatement!

Yea

With no work tomorrow, I'll watch their game tonight at 10. I just need to see it for myself.

Okay...

Now I'm nervous

They should have stomped

They should have stomped this team by 50 points. This does not bode well.....
