UNC formally severs ties with former football tutor

Bookmark and Share

The University of North Carolina has sent a disassociation letter severing ties with Jennifer Wiley, the former tutor associated with the school and NCAA's investigation into possible academic misconduct within the Tar Heels football program.

In the letter, dated Nov. 5 and signed by athletic director Dick Baddour, states that Wiley provided impermissible academic assistance to some of the school’s student-athletes in 2009 and 2010.

The letter also states that Wiley provided impermissible financial assistance in excess of $2,000 in connection with travel and transportation issues. The university released the letters to the media this afternoon as the result of public records requests.

In a statement sent to the media by her lawyer, Joseph B Cheshire V of Raleigh, Wiley acknowledged her role in the investigation. The statement said the providing of funds mentioned in the letter she received from UNC related to allowing one individual to use her credit card where a credit card was required. According to the statement, bank deposit would show she was immediately repaid for the cost applied to her card, and she did not realize such a transaction was impermissible.

"She did not intend for her work to 'provide impermissible academic assistance' and to the extent it did, she is deeply saddened, particularly as it has affected the young men she cared so much about," the statement read.

Through Cheshire, Wiley requested privacy and said she would have no further comments at this time.

"Disassociation" from the program means that the school will not accept any assistance from Wiley or permit prospective or enrolled athletes to have contact with her, among other things.

Wiley is the third person whose disassociation letter has been released to the media in connection with the investigation. Former UNC player Chris Hawkins, who’s been labeled an agent by the NCAA, and Miami jeweler A.J. Machado are the others who have been disassociated.

UNC also released a document providing additional details of the investigation.
Reinstatement requests sent by the university to the NCAA indicate that impermissible gifts, including cash, jewelry and travel and entertainment expenses were provided to football players by:

  • Former UNC player Hakeem Nicks ($3,300).
  • Former UNC player Omar Brown ($1,865).
  • Former UNC player Mahlon Carey ($140).
  • Vernon Davis ($20).
  • A person from Miami whose full name is not known to the university

Some of the benefits provided were repaid by the UNC players before they or their hosts knew that receipt of the benefits violated NCAA rules, according to UNC.

Surfer, which claim that I

Surfer, which claim that I made was unsubstantiated by either press releases from UNC, a ruling from the NCAA, or a media report?  I didn't paint with a broad brush, i just repeated facts found out and/or confirmed by others.  Oh, and I forgot to mention that three of your player told bald-faced lies to NCAA investigators.  That's the "Carolina Way" I guess.

As for you Letter of Inquiry, none will be issued in the near future b/c the NCAA is still gathering evidence and they have a LOOOOOONG way to go.  The thing that YOU and other UNC-CHeat fans need to worry about is when the NCAA will stop following leads and put a period on the investigation.

At any rate, I'm glad to see that you are finally facing reality and hoping against hope that the Letter won't come from the NCAA.

Goheels, you are doing one

Goheels, you are doing one of the best Baghdad Bob impersonations that I have ever seen.  Keep it up.

The NCAA is on your campus.  Your assistant head coach had to leave the program because he took money from an agent and acted as a runner.  Numerous players have been suspended because of academic fraud.  Your head football coach hired a tutor fired by the university...the same one that helped your players cheat.  You have players that have been ruled permanently ineligible for taking illegal benefits from agents.  Your athletic director and chancellor are being sued for abuse of FERPA laws.   Your head coach denies knowledge of ANY of this.  Half of your football program, the tutor, John Blake, your chancellor and AD have hired expensive lawyers.

Yet, you have the unadulterated gall to tell us that nothing is going on.  Prepare for the hammer of thor from the NCAA.

Details

That is a pretty broad brush you are using 4 wheeler, whatever makes you feel good I guess. Time will tell re: any NCAA actions, but right now no letter of inquiry at this point.

Good post

Great blog post. It’s useful information.

2nd time's a charm

So this is the 2nd time UNC has severed ties with the tutor only for her to be hired by Butch.

The question now is:  when is Butch going to sever ties with her?  Burney still has one more class to gradgeeate

ESPN article offers more information

And more clarity if you ask me.

Bring in the BIG GUNS....cause the Clowns are already here

I think that several folks have already hit the nail on the cranium.....this letter is about as pompus and pious and putrid and pitiful as it could be.  I ran out of words....

The fact that an elementary teacher is being "publicly ridiculed" and DISASSOCIATED is about as laughable as two current events.....Nancy Pelosi saying that she is going to run for the House Minority Leadership to SAVE the party and prevent the EVIL EMPIRE (watch out, Darth must be on the loose) from undoing the PEOPLE's WILL.

The second thing that is laughable, even more so than the letter from Dickie Baddour, is our own (actually Y'all's OWN...I don't claim him) Erskine Bowles setting up meetings at the Ritz Carlson for his "Waste Reduction and Elimination and Deficit Reduction Bi-Partisan Committee".

And you KNOW when Joe Cheshire is representing Ms. Willey, she done got REALLY Lawyered up.  When Joe says "NO MORE", you know he means it....

This is Thursday.....we ALL know that someone has incriminating pictures of Dickie (I don't know the state of dress or undress, the masters or the dominated, the gender of the participants or the number of participants in the room....but it is obviously GOOD....in the worst way).  This person has control of Dickie and is requiring him to hold Thursday pressers (maybe that is the afternoon that the digital image holder has off) and do RIDICULOUS things and make RIDICULOUS statements to show the world how smart that Lee Fowler actually seemed.  Did I really type that....it just came out....but it does make me wonder if even F. U. Fowler would have handled this whole sordid affair better.

LORDY, I will miss this so much when the NCAA finally gets around to making a ruling....

Allow Me

Since Heels20 is probably still laughing, allow me to explain EXACTLY where you went wrong. UNC is releasing the information they are allowed by law to release, they don't care what you haters know or want to know; their concern is to satisfy public disclosure laws without violating privacy laws. I understand that may be over your head. The letters of dissassociation are a formality to satisfy NCAA requirements. The guilty players, Blake, nor the tutor have been "thrown under a bus"; they behaved in a way that was detrimental to the University and the Athletic Program and were kicked off the team, suspended, fired, or forced to resign as a result. If they hadn't been then haters like you would be going on and on about how they were allowed to play or remain employed in spite of what they had done! One rogue tutor or a player accepting $20 does not equal a "corruption machine". You are grasping at air. As for those canaries, if they had anything to sing they would be singing. There is nothing else to tell. The situation at UNC has never been nearly as bad as the local media and you haters have wanted it to be. It is turning out to be much ado about nothing. Heels20 is right, you are funny.

The saddest thing about this

The saddest thing about this ridiculous letter is that the tutor did exactly what she was told to do for the University AND Butch Davis.  The tutor worked for UNC-CHeat's head coach after the University fired her for getting "too close" to certain athletes.  You simply can't make this stuff up.  The NCAA is going to have a field day with this.  Don't listen to Baddour.  He said that this would all be wrapped up "soon" MONTHS ago.  He's lying to everyone and butch is lying to recruits and telling them the same thing.

Any recruits that sign with UNC this year might as well get used to no bowls and NCAA probation.

You simply can't make this stuff up

Congrats! You just did!!

If Coach Davis was implicated in any of this, he'd a been out of a job a while back.

Are you not better than this?

This is just too funny.

This is just too funny.  Keep peeling the onion.  Dirty Dirty Tarheels.  If Baddour writes a disassociation letter to every ex-player that gave illegal benefits to current players then you'll never see another ex-player at a UNC-CHeat football game.  Nicks, Davis Brown, Thomas.... the list goes on and on.

Why?

Did these young men ask for the money?

Aren't they liable for anything?

This woman seems to be a scapegoat.

As to being self righteous,I cannot imagine a more self-righteous group of athletes than the former Duke lacrosse players who felt they had been unjustly accused of hiring a stripper.Here,here.Everyone knows outside Dick Nixon no group has brought more dishonor to Duke than these young men, despite their high powered attorneys demands for restitution.

Abolish the NCAA Knight Commission.

Since a Chapel Hill alum was co-chair of the NCAA Knight Commission and held up as the perfect example of how to run your athletics department, I find it ironic they are even being investigated.  It's probably because Myles Brand died as NCAA president.  For years the perfect tarheels were trashing everyone else's way of business.  Now it is they who have been exposed as corrupt.  In the end, no one is important to the institution, just ask Matt Doherty.  The institution bites the heads off it's members because the institution needs to be viewed as perfect while the living people are portrayed as imperfect. So go ahead and give you entire life away being loyal to bricks and mortar and basketball gyms and football stadiums.  In the end, they will throw you under the bus to protect the non living entity.  The NCAA Knight Commission has been a farse since it's founding, just ask the Duke lacrosse players who watched NCAA Knight Commission member and UNC professor Hodding Carter III lead the press conference at the end of the lacorsse scandal....after a UNC alum in Mike Nifong did what he did.

This is it!!

Jeez. I'd be willing to bet most of us here at ACCNow could lend $3300, $1865, $140 and $20 to a friend or relative.

While wrong, this is starting to look more and more like minor violations.

The football players at Oklahoma who were "working" at a car dealership did worse than this and the school/football team got barely a slap.

OOH, OOH, OOOH

I want a UNC disassociation letter.  I mean, I don't have any association with UNC, never would, never will.  But I would dern sure like to have one, I would frame that puppy and put it in my office PROUDLY!

comical

35 year old Omar Brown gives players $1850 and unc explains it away as "helping friends" and "they didn't know"?????  Gimme a break.

UNC "dissociates" from tutor - ROTFLMAO

Well, well, well....The big ol' pompous "wine-and-cheese" Chapel Hill'ers got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, now didn't they?  So do they do the right thing and 'fess up?  Puh-leez....They do what ALL desperate privileged institutions do...INVADE GRENADA!!!  Meaning pick on the little guy, blame someone, blame a young girl, (truly shameless), point fingers, yell, scream, kick, bite, and above all, DENY, DENY, DENY!!!

Shame on you, UNC, you gutless wizards.  Legal cowardice at its finest.  Where did a football tutor get THOUSANDS of dollars to kick around??  (Gee, I wonder.)  The kicker is the football program stinks anyway.  What a bunch of pompous self-important mendacious low-lifes.  How they sleep at night is a true mystery.  Satan's coming for ya, boys......

Lmfaoau

You're so out of touch with reality it's comical!

Ouch!!

That hurt :-)

Thinking small

Reggie Bush reportedly received over $350k. Same for Chris Weber, the former Michigan basketball player. Cam Newton, QB for Auburn, allegedly was offered up for $200k.

$20 dollars?

Is it better to ask forgiveness than permission?

Wow. Vernon Davis ($20)???

Vernon. That is all you got???

It took UNC until now to fire the tutor? What has she been doing since this was exposed??? Cheating for other players.

UNC Double Standard

Nicks($3300) & Brown ($1865) were only helping friends - they didn't know any better BUT Jennifer Wiley ($2000) got a 5 year disassociation letter!!! You can make this stuff up. Thank you Thorp & Baddour for making UNC look completely IGNORANT!

(CUE: We can't prove Butch knew that his son's tutor was giving financial aid to his players)

"Disassociation" ???

Disassociation ..... Is that worse than Double Secret Probation ?  Can Penicillin treat it?

For a bling bling jeweler in South Beach to be "disassociated" from UNC seems like cruel and unusual punishment.  Someone notify the ACLU.

Who said "this can't possibly get any more embarrassing than it already is ..."  YES, it can.  Hey Bob Winston, it's time to drive up in the little car and all the clowns pour out.

Butch Pays Tutor, Tutor Passes It On To Players

This information confirms that a money trail existed from Head Coach Butch Davis to the UNC-CH football players.  Butch paid the tutor, the tutor took care of the players.

The tutor needs to step up and explain both the origins of the money paid, the details of who received the 'impermissible financial assistance', and what these benefits were exchanged for.  If this is not forthcoming, it can only be assumed that the payments consisted of money passed to her by Butch Davis to pay for benefits to the players just for signing on and playing at UNC-CH.

More of the same BS

This is just another example of Carolina throwing people under the bus.  They did it to Blake.  They did it to some of the players.  Now they're doing it to the tutor.  Carolina only makes public the information that they WANT us all to know.  They only released phone records that helped incriminate coach Blake.  The rest were kept private.

It should be obvious to all that Carolina is a corruption machine, and they are controlling information so as to protect themselves.  They have no interest in getting the WHOLE truth out to the masses.

Here's hoping some of these folks start singing like canaries soon.

Haha

I enjoy laughing at morons like you.

Laugh all you want

and when you're done laughing, feel free to point out exactly where I went wrong in my observations.

Um, let's see

How about where you have nothing to back up the fact that we're hiding something.  I would say that a 10 year old girl is capable of making the statement you just made, but it would be an insult to 10 year old girls.  You spew stuff out on this blog with absolutely no facts.  The fact that you might actually have a degree from NC State is an embarrassment to the ACC.
