UNC extends Dick Baddour's contract

Bookmark and Share

MEMPHIS — North Carolina's Board of Trustees unanimously approved a three-year contract extension for athletics director Dick Baddour on Thursday, a team spokesman said.

He will earn a base salary of $295,000 a year — the same as his current salary — and will be under contract through June 30, 2012.

Two new bonuses have been added to Baddour's contract: he will earn an additional 1/12 of his base pay if the baseball team goes to the NCAA tournament, and an additional 1/12 of his base pay if UNC's teams collectively post an average Academic Progress Rate  of 90 or above. He will continue to earn bonuses if the football and basketball teams play in the postseason.

very slow start

but Baddour has redeemed himself over the last few years. prove me wrong by saying we could be doing better than Roy Williams and Butch Davis?

well, I am waiting ...

Baddour

This Tar Heel and all others are eternally grateful that UNC landed Roy Williams on the second pass (although that first rejection was painfully awkward for everyone, including Roy Williams and his family).  In my opinion, Baddour deserves little credit for the selection and hiring of Roy Williams.  I could easily be wrong about this, but I believe that Dean Smith probably deserves most of the credit for UNC eventually landing Roy Williams.  Simply stated, Roy could not say no to his longstanding mentor and dear friend the second time around.  Bill Gutheridge may have also helped in this effort.

The timing was right for round two in the courtship of Roy. According to reports during the second attempt to persuade Williams to leave Kansas, some tension and discord had developed between Williams and the Kansas AD at that time.

Butch Davis was a great hire.  He is a good fit for UNC, and Baddour deserves credit for closing that deal.  But as Coach Davis often says about his players, you must look at the body of work.  I will agree with your premise that the last few years have been an improvement over the remainder of Baddour's overall tenure.

Baddour

Baddour inherited a pretty solid department that was effectively led for years by John Swofford with Baddour as his assistant. In my opinion, Carolina has endured some really low moments under Baddour's leadership. John Bunting and Matt Doherty were sentimental choices, not sound business decisions or particularly wise selections for head coaching slots. The manner in which their respective departures were handled by the AD was a complete embarrassment. Beamer really did a number on us.

Hey, it could be worse...you

Hey, it could be worse...you could have Lee Fowler.

Why in the hell did you do this UNC?

Read my title, that's all I want to know.

Conspiracy theory

There is only one reason for UNC to do this. Now State will have to give Fowler an extension, which will incite Wolfpack Nation to a new level of howling foul.
