CHAPEL HILL – (UPDATED) The NCAA’s investigation into North Carolina’s football program – which began with a probe into possible improper contact between players and agents – has expanded into academics, UNC chancellor Holden Thorp said tonight.
Flanked by Tar Heels football coach Butch Davis and athletic director Dick Baddour, Thorp said that during a joint investigation with the NCAA, the school learned of possible academic misconduct that involves a former undergraduate tutor and student-athletes on the football team.
“We are treating this issue with the seriousness you would expect from this University,'' Thorp said. "We will straighten this out. We are still gathering information, but … we hope the scope of this is limited."
Davis said the tutor in question "is someone that has previously been employed by our family" to be an academic coach and academic adviser for his son.
"This is someone who worked with our son, and to be honest with you, we're a little bit surprised and possibly disappointed,'' Davis said of the tutor. "But there's been no revelation ... as to what actually transpired."
Baddour said the focus of the academic investigation is on the football team, but added that the school would look at it as an opportunity to take a look into the tutoring program within other athletic programs.
Baddour said Davis “still has my support.”
Baddour also said that although they would like to finish the investigation before the Tar Heels' football opener next weekend against Louisiana State, “it is likely the review will extend beyond the start of the season.”
"The investigation now how two prongs," he added. "I want to caution you about making assumptions if student-athletes don't play. ... We resolve to find any misconduct and deal with it seriously."
Baddour said he could not talk the number of players involved, or name the tutor, who has since been terminated.
"We are looking at improprieties that occurred outside the classroom," he said.
UNC professors Jack Evans and Lissa Broome (both former faculty athletics representatives), senior associate athletic director John Blanchard, Lance Markos from the compliance staff and university lawyers all are part of the team looking into the possible academic misconduct, Baddour said.
For about two months, the NCAA and the school have been investigating allegations of a possible improper relationship between sports agents and UNC football players. An undisclosed number of players were interviewed when NCAA investigators visited campus July 12 and 13, and investigators conducted more interviews during a return trip earlier this month.
Defensive tackle Marvin Austin and wide receiver Greg Little were among the players interviewed. The investigation also involves associate head coach John Blake.
One potential violation of NCAA rules occurred when former UNC defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer paid for Austin and then Tar Heel defensive tackle Cam Thomas to train in California in the summer of 2009. Thomas confirmed that Balmer paid for the trip, which may be construed as an extra benefit by the NCAA.
Thomas and Austin trained at Proactive Sports Performance in Westlake Village, Calif., where clients of California-based agent Gary Wichard of Pro Tect Management train for the NFL draft.
Blake, the North Carolina assistant coach, is a former Pro Tect vice president and a longtime associate of Wichard, who also is Balmer's agent.
Austin also was connected with the NCAA's investigation at the University of South Carolina, where the NCAA also has interviewed multiple players, including Gamecocks tight end Weslye Saunders.
Saunders was asked about his friendship with Austin, his online interaction with Austin on the social media site Twitter, and a trip to Washington, D.C., according to Weslye's father Barry Saunders, a metro columnist for The News & Observer.
UNC announced the Thursday night press conference around mid-afternoon, shortly after Davis' regularly scheduled pre-practice briefing with the media was abruptly canceled. The early portion of practice, which was scheduled to be open to the media, also was closed.

God, I am starting to sound
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 10:51 — unc098God, I am starting to sound like Greedbluster!!!!!!!!! Yikes
The truth is I am one PO'ed poster.
When things stink...
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 20:51 — heelsno1...it usually starts from the head. All of this mess from an AD (who built his credentials under John Swofford with responsibilities including the oversight of NCAA compliance and governance matters)...give me a long pause for a deep and extended breath!
The AD said he supports BD, but do Thorp and the faithful Tar Heel contingent support Dickie Baddour?
This whole matter has become utterly insane.
Amen!
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 01:35 — bobmacThe fish rots from the head down! What an embarrassment for UNC, the entire university system, the state of NC, and the reputation of the ACC. Why stoop to the mentality of the SEC football factory. I remember when a minimum SAT score was required for any athlete to play sports in the ACC. I want to say 800 was required. Many universities would have less headaches if a similar requirement was in place today. My alma mater and the Chris Washburn debacle comes to mind. My solution would be to take any athletic scholarships which were lost because of honor code violations be scholastic or civil/criminal violations which would be ruled an embarrassment to the university guidelines and conduct a lottery drawing for any student not already under full scholarship. Then, the university would reward a truly deserving student. It is amazing how many scholarships become available after the first semester. If such guidelines were in place, college recruiters would look for the student first and the athlete second not the vice-versa method used by college recruiters today. This UNC honor code violation is a real acid test for Thorp. Will he uphold the standards of "The Carolina Way" or will he redefine "The Carolina Way"? I know what his mother Bo would do: she would throw the whole rotten fish out!
I know what your saying BO
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 08:56 — unc098I know the clan ( Thorp ) and there is no lack of spunk. I actually have a lot of faith that Holden will do the right thing.

Sat, 08/28/2010 - 01:30 — mad_max"This whole matter has become utterly insane."
Totally agree. This has been the most bizarre preseason around here that I've ever witnessed.
More waiting to come
Thu, 08/26/2010 - 22:50 — mad_maxOkay, so let's look at everything that is going on...that we know of.
1) improper contact with agents, trips to Miami and DC
2) the whole Thomas/Balmer/Austin/Wichard/Blake situation
3) possible academic fraud on a large scale within the football program
It's going to take quite a while for the NCAA to sort through all of this and come up with what they feel is the appropriate action. Obviously things won't be resolved before the opener against LSU, but I'm wondering if the NCAA is going to have this wrapped up before the season is over. Whatever happens, and whenever it happens, Butch Davis is definitely going to be feeling the heat. It's not looking good for ol' Butchie...however, Baddour doesn't really seem all that worried IMO. I guess he figures that as long as nobody comes near the b-ball program, then he is safe.
Butch and the Nanny
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 12:45 — JPDOhioI am not sure that "Nanny" is the right word for this person, although the term was used somewhere in the multitude of articles and posts on this subject. But, as far as Butch is concerned, this is the one thing that I find difficult to explain away.
When you run a program with almost a hundred players, it is impossible to keep tabs on everyone. And, no matter what you do and how much you preach, you are going to get a few that cross the line. The first two points max refers to happened outside the program and would be difficult to police (or know about unless some idiot talks about them on a public social media site). So I can see where Butch can be defended on those transgressions, other than perhaps his decision to hire an assistant with an allegedly checkered past.
The third allegation is bothersome to me, especially when one of the people under investigation worked in his home. Was Butch just oblivious, or did he know and look the other way? How could he not make sure that someone in his employ working in his house with his family was squeaky clean? I guess this will eventually come out as the investigation continues.
I get no pleasure in saying this, but I think Butch is done. There is enough smoke here that there has to be fire somewhere and Butch will be the ultimate sacrifice. That may or may not be fair, but it certainly is the way the world works these days. I developed a soft spot for Butch when he coached the Browns, so I hope I am wrong. But I have a bad feeling about his longevity at UNC.
I agree with you JDP. There
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 08:41 — unc098I agree with you JPD. There is to much smoke and I thing Butch is on the rotisserie. I would be surprised at this point if he survives this season. And that goes for Baddour as well. Its going to be long haul for this program to come back from this. I wouldn't be surprised to see Butch at his alma mater within the year.
As far as the basketball program is concerned: These are two different programs with two different coaches and I would be surprised if this went outside of football.
Why would u be surprised
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 09:27 — gvillegatrIf this didn't reach the ball program? I'll be surprised if it does not. These guys hang n the same circles and u know they talk. The coaches do not have to be involved for this to happen...
Nah
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 10:10 — Heels20Sorry Gatr, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Many of these football players are dumb as rocks. The guys on the court are very different. Part of it is because of the kind of people Roy recruits (passes on the likes of John Wall). Another part of it is that the basketball players are under more of a microscope. We went 20-17 last year and we still got more national attention than just about any NCAA team. Any time one of these guys slips up, everyone knows about it. When Quan and Elzy got busted for pot, it became a distant memory in a week. When Graves was caught with bud, he was suspended for the rest of the year (and cops weren't even involved).
It's extremely disappointing that all of this is going on, but it's even worse if Butch knew about it all. There's no denying that John Bunting had tremendous struggles when it came to recruiting and coaching, but he loved this university too much to sacrifice its clean reputation. If a player blatantly violated rules (Adarius Bowman, Isaiah Thomas, Fred Sparkman, etc.) they suffered the consequences. Also keep in mind that Bunting lost to NC State fewer times in 6 years than Butch did in 3. I'm not trying to hate on Butch too much, but I do feel it's important to give credit where it's due.
We all know that there is
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 10:55 — unc098We all know that there is only so much that coaches and their staff can do to monitor their charges. Gatr has a point and I am a little nervous, but I tend to agree with you concerning BB. The players seem to be on a tighter leash and there are only a few of them so the microscope is more focused on their activities. Also the tradition of the program dictates a different standard then football not to mention that there is much more continuity in terms of the tenure of the coaches. That being said I am hoping this is contained to a few and the perpetrators receive the same punishment as any other student at the university.
I have to admit I was somewhat alarmed by all the news in the Spring concerning players being academically ineligible and suddenly they all seem to be back on the squad.
I always liked John Bunting and felt that he was treated poorly by Baddour and the power brokers. I liked the way he ran his program and his allegiance and love of the university was unassailable. It is undeniable at this point that at a minimum there is a significant lack of oversight on the part of BD and his staff .
No doubt about it
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 13:28 — Heels20Despite his coaching shortcomings, nobody loved UNC more than John Bunting. He represented the program very well.
I'm not singling no one out,
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 14:43 — gvillegatrBut where was all this koombayah for Bunting when he was losing his job? I also feel like you guys are throwing BD under the bus b4 anything concrete has come out
C'mon guys. Let's have a little faith.
Well
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 17:08 — Heels20I'm not necessarily saying we shouldn't have fired Bunting. I was kind of on the fence at the time for reasons previously stated (crappy coach/recruiter, but great representative). Keep in mind that what I'm saying about Butch is under the assumption that he knew of what was going on. As 098 said, only so much has been proven so we don't know for sure how guilty these guys are. At the same time, I feel like there is a lot of evidence that stuff went down (as it does at most other schools, whether to this extent or not) and Butch probably knew about it. It may be unfair for me to make that assumption, but hopefully we'll find out in the coming weeks. Just like 098 said, I hope I eat my words.
And I hope with a pickle on
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 18:21 — unc098And I hope with a pickle on top.
BTW
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 15:45 — unc098How is Gatr junior doing and fatherhood in general?
On shedule
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 21:14 — gvillegatrThe 4 yr old is starting futbol next week and he'll eventually be splitting the up rights b4 u know it.
The new Born is basically cheer leading, but give him time.
Thx for asking, 098.
Great
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 22:42 — unc098Glad to hear the family is doing well.
Good point about Miami, but that was long ago in a galaxy far far away. Like I said earlier I don't believe he orchestrated the problem. I think this thing has gotten away from him. My problem is his lack of knowledge of what was going on. Hard to say and there is much to be revealed.
Bilecat is back which makes me believe you are right about Tdiddy.
I commend you Gatr on your
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 15:57 — unc098I commend you Gatr on your reasoning and I want to go that route as well, however with every passing day BD is throwing himself under the bus. And in Chapel Hill you don't have to do anything and you have a good chance of getting clocked by one anyway.
Sadly he is not exercising enough control over his student athletes or his staff and that is very disturbing. I hope I will have to eat my words...and will if proven wrong. I am mostly really POed. that this has occurred.
For the record, and this was before I started posting on this site, I was not in favor of firing Bunting. There were many people including one very heavy hitter, whose namesake is on several edifices on campus, who was very wary of hiring Davis along with others.
It doesn't make sense.
Sun, 08/29/2010 - 21:08 — gvillegatrHe cleaned up Miami after they were basically given the death penalty. Nobody would have had the balls to cheat at the U directly after that.
So why is he gonna come to UNC and cheat of all places.
It is very plausible the tutor went rogue to earn some more money.

If Butch knew about this
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 12:08 — Heels20then he should be fired. Period.
Agree
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 12:41 — SurferBut I am thinking that DB already asked Coach Davis about that. Otherwise he would not have given him a vote of confidence? Of course, we don't know everthing there is to know at this point either.
Vote of confidence
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 14:34 — willncsu34You know who else got one of those right before he was fired? Senior Amato.
Seriously though, I bet you will just get a slap on the wrist. Its not like they were selling shoes or anything.
Nope
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 15:00 — Heels20Now that Thorp is involved, they'll get the boot. As they should.
Ditto that...
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 09:25 — heelsno1and I wonder what (...if anything) is stipulated in their respective employment contracts about the terms of dismissal if the reputation of the university is damaged for matters under their leadership.
My bet.
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 16:57 — JPDOhioThere is such a provision in the contract.
Yeah, but the devil is in
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 17:13 — unc098Yeah, but the devil is in the details and establishing proof is a long and costly endeavor. The usual buyout and 'get rid of the problem' scenario will probably play out.
Agreed
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 17:20 — JPDOhioBut it is better to have it in there than not.
Sadly, I am very familiar with contract disputes and legal tactics that are used to disregard or reinterpret plain language. The usual result is a payoff that is undeserved, but necessary because the alternative is too scary.
Rant # 2
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 17:58 — unc098Absolutely! But there is always a smarmy way to get out of anything with the right amount of dough. This whole business is engorging the cynic in me. Uggghhhh.
I am more interested to see how Thorp handles this mess then anything. So we (UNCers) all get to be disappointed in our athletic program for a while. A bad decision on the part of the chancellor at this junction will doom us to more of the same. I also see it as a conflict that has been coming for some time ( decades ) between the big money athletic donors with political connections and the administration in terms of who will steer the direction of the image of the University. High profile athletic teams are supposed to be enhancers of the image of the University and sliding down the slippery slope of unchecked athletic departments that run on their own money and make their own rules, one pays the price of inattention.
The Rant
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 10:52 — unc098Well there are a lot of hungry lawyers out there and I am sure the terms of the contract will be fought over for quite some time. I actually believe that Davis didn't know what was going on but lack of institutional oversight on his part and his staff is inexcusable and it goes right up the chain to Baddour as well. I am with Bill Friday on this one. Its time to right the ship and this is an opportunity for the academic leadership in this country to stand up and have some courage. The big money dogs that reflect our sick societies compulsion for entertainment and 'win at all costs' mentality have had their way to long in college athletics.
The Boot
Sat, 08/28/2010 - 08:46 — unc098As they should. The tail has wagged the dog long enough. From the destruction of the most beautiful football stadium in America to this scandal I think its time to put a halt to this madness.I never liked Baddour and its time for the boot to be up his butt too.
