DURHAM — North Carolina football coach Butch Davis told a banquet crowd this afternoon that the NCAA has promised it will move quickly in the probe that brought investigators to campus last week.
“The NCAA has assured us that they will make this as quick, and as soon as possible will expediate(sic) [the investigation],” Davis said at the annual Triangle Pigskin Preview at the Washington Duke Inn.
The event marked Davis' first public comments about the investigation. Davis, above right, talking with East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill, shared the banquet podium with coaches David Cutcliffe of Duke, McNeill, Mose Rison of N.C. Central and Tom O’Brien of N.C. State.
Before today, UNC athletic director Dick Baddour had issued the university’s only public comments on the matter, confirming that investigators visited Chapel Hill. He declined in his comments, however, to identify the sport involved.
In his first remarks at the banquet, Davis didn’t offer many details.
“I know there’s a lot of people sitting here today that would love to have a lot of answers,” Davis said. “As we go through this review, there’s things obviously that the NCAA has asked us not to comment on. One thing I can share with you is that the University of North Carolina is doing absolutely everything from a cooperating standpoint.”
Greg Little Sr., the father of North Carolina wide receiver Greg Little, has confirmed that his son also was interviewed by NCAA investigators. The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer also have confirmed that Tar Heel defensive tackle Marvin Austin was interviewed.
Investigators also have talked to South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders, who is from Durham, and Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus. (Saunders father, Barry Saunders, is a metro columnist for The News & Observer.)
“One of the things you can see is that there are a lot of other institutions around the country that are going through this currently,” Davis said. “There probably will be some more in the very near future.”
Davis began his comments on the issue by responding to something McNeill had just said. A first-year coach, McNeill said getting ready for the start of his first season has been a “whirlwind.”
“You think Ruffin would like to trade whirlwinds?” Davis asked, drawing laughter from the crowd.
He then gave his brief comments on the investigation before turning his comments to football. Davis is expected to speak with the media after the banquet, but it’s unclear if he will share any more details about the investigation.

Tarheels love corruption
Fri, 07/23/2010 - 01:44 — GreedbusterThe four schools involed.
The University of Florida president Bernard Machen is the former dean of the dental school in Chapel Hill.
The University of South Carolina's AD Eric Hyman is a UNC alum
UNC's everything is run by UNC alums.
The University of Albama's AD Dave Hart Jr's son Rick and daughter-in-law Allison are both UNC Chapel Hill alums. Of course ole Dave is looking out for his son who was brought into the athletic administration game by the UNC tarheels. Rick Hart is an athletic director himself.
for someone who hates UNC so much

UNC=Unethcial & Notoriously Corrupt
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 19:48 — GreedbusterI'm back, dunna nunna nunna. The tarheels have been cheaters for decades. They create scandal in college sports then rush to be the heroes who clean up the scandals they create. South Carolina says their player Saunders did nothing wrong. The focus never even came to SC before two UNC players found themselves in hot water. With a UNC alum as AD in Columbia, SC, and UNC alums as AD in Chapel Hill, as well as ACC conference comissioner, why would they not all get on the phone and do damage control and drag many others into the mix? The question is, why has the UNC basketball program never been investigated? Oh I get it, because the head coach, as a UNC alum left Kansas on probation and was responsible for the firing of Kansas' AD. Well fellas, Myles Brand died. The friend of college basketball no longer is available to start an extra unit using the Knight family who once owned most of these newspapers down south. He even fired Bobby Knight to keep him from breaking Dean Smith's record while Bill Clinton joked about it in the NC legislature in 1997. Dunna nunna nunna.

Thu, 07/22/2010 - 16:28 — GreedbusterJPDOhio, what if I am married to a black, Hispanic or Asian woman? Your comment sounded like a racist who feels his power slipping away and his white wife is his only hope. Like Bill & Hillary Clinton. Remember his nickname is Bubba. While a UNC alum John Swofford teamed up with Dave Hart Jr, whose son Rick and daughter-in-law Allison are both UNC alums, expanded the ACC to help UNC Chapel Hill make more money, they sent out a poverty champion to run for President. Meanwhile, as the co-founding chair of the NCAA Knight Commission, UNC's Bill Friday said conference expansion was greedy and it was all because of football...while John Swofford said the ACC needed to expand to make more money...and while the current UNC system president was trying to get his old boss's wife elected as US President. Bill Friday and John Edwards both were frauds on the poverty/greed issue and the ACC expansion was about tarheel greed. John Swofford may have been a football player in college at UNC but he is an alum of a big time basketball program. Dave Hart Jr may have been AD at football powerhouse Florida State but he played basketball in college and his two kids are UNC alums. Rick Hart is even an AD as a UNC alum.

Thu, 07/22/2010 - 19:35 — AgentPierceGreed; I'm not here to mud wrestle or trade snappy repartee with you. I'm just curious about the strong "passion" you seem to always exhibit in your comments. And I can't figure out if its a who or a what that you are so angry with. Or is it sports or social justice?
If I recall, most/all of your comments are tied to UNC sports stories. But you have a more determined anger or frustration towards UNC than the average NCStater or other ABCers. You know a great deal of inside UNC sports history that you weave thru your posts as if in some long-running sports conspiracy theory.
I'm fine w/ ABCers. I can appreciate how the arrogance of some UNCers could generate such animosity, but is there more in your case? What point are you trying to drive home about UNC?
LOL
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 17:23 — JPDOhioFirst, I have no idea what you are talking about.
Second, it was obviously a joke, which only a handful of people wouldn't get.
Third, anyone using the term "slave" in this context loses all credibility. Although, I have to admit it does not rise to the level of Jesse Jackson using the term to call out Dan Gilbert for reacting poorly and publicly to Lebron James running off to South Beach.
Wasn't aware until recently that today's slaves can be paid outrageous money, go to pool parties and have entourages. Times have certainly changed.
College sports-reparations.
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 17:37 — GreedbusterCollege athletes do not get paid but the billionaire bankers who advertise at their events do get paid and drink the best wine and eat the best food the university has...and of which none of the students ever see in the dining halls. The only reason the democrats who run academia decided to give free rides for jumping high, running fast, and so forth is because it was a form of reparations. Black people now identify with the party which runs academia, not because they're highly educated but because they were given something they otherwise would not have had without sports. The elite are looking for ways to now take back these things but they've got to find a good reason and blame it on the black players themselves. Being a college athlete is like being a 4 year intern for Donald Trump. You make $25,000 a year while watching him eat caviar and ride in Bentleys. You can only hope you have the talent to go professional but even then you'll be an employee to a billionaire with a Bentley. Thank God they are well endowed though or else white women would have no use for them whatsoever.
Wow

You're bringing your trash to ACC Now, huh? Beware, we've got a troll.
Only a troll probing for posts would retort with something so asinine as what your recent posts detail. Nice. Get out from under that bridge much?
Women are the new slave owners
Thu, 07/22/2010 - 16:02 — GreedbusterI am a white guy but I wonder if any of these black players still feel like slaves. Isn't this a political year? And isn't a white woman trying to win in politics on a story about bad things men did in an all male sport? (Elaine Marshall). College sports are used by the establishment for political purposes and unfortunately the women will take full advantage of this event to help themselves get more power.
"NEW" slave owners?
