UNC adds assistant coach to replace Blake

Bookmark and Share

UNC has added assistant coach Charlie Coiner to replace departed assistant John Blake, head coach Butch Davis said today.

Coiner will help with the defensive line and special teams, Davis said. Coiner joined the staff on Tuesday, Davis said. Blake, who resigned on Sept. 5, has a central role in the on-going NCAA investigation at UNC.

Coiner, an NFL assistant since 2001, most recently worked for the Buffalo Bills as tight ends coach. He previously worked with UNC offensive coordinator John Shoop with the Chicago Bears.

"He's a good fit," Davis said. "He's a good football coach who's smart and bright."

Art Kaufman will continue to work the defensive line, Davis said, and the coaching structure of defensive staff will continue to be a "collaborative" effort.

Blake was UNC's defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. He will be paid $74,000 through the end of the season, according to UNC. There are no contract numbers available on Coiner, who has technically not been hired by the university yet, according to team spokesman Kevin Best said.

The most intriguing aspect

The most intriguing aspect of Coiner's hire is that it casts some light into Butch's possible future at UNC - which I had written off as done by season's end.  One would expect that, if UNC has plans - or even sees it as a possibility - to ditch Davis at some point, then why would they approve his hiring another staffer?

Maybe I'm all wrong and maybe, just maybe, Butch is the saintly saver of programs he's reputed to be.  Maybe being the captain of a ship that clearly has more below the waterline than above doesn't necessarily reflect on the captain.  Whatever the case, my theory about Butch's imminent demise has been called into question by this most recent turn of events.  I would expect his request for a new defensive line coach to be met with a resounding "No!" by the UNC powers-that-be . . . if his head truly was on the chopping block.  I would think they'd tell him to make do with what he had, at least until the NCAA review is completed.

I suppose I'll refrain from further theorizing until all the chickens have come home to roost.  This stuff just doesn't make sense.  Apparently the UNC administration has good reason to back Butch and, in light of all that is swirling around him, that could only mean some empirical knowledge of Butch's innocence in the two scandals currently being investigated.  But what of my theory that, despite the amount of blood on Butch's hands (or lack thereof), he's still the head coach and responsible for everything football-related?  Doesn't a good captain always go down with his ship?  Wouldn't it appear to be in UNC's best interest (as a University, not as a pit-stop for talented athletes) to simply clean house in the football department at season's end and start anew?  Wouldn't that make it clear to the world just what the priorities are at Carolina and show the commitment of UNC's non-jocks to reinstate and maintain the school's previously sterling reputation?

Then again, maybe the NCAA & university officials are just chasing ghosts around Chapel Hill.  Doubtful?  At this point, sure.  Possible?  I guess so.  But really, why not?  Nothing else here seems to make any sense.

We'll just have to wait and see.

As for new coach Coiner . . . well, I hope he hasn't just jumped aboard a sinking ship.

Very good point. It would

Very good point. It would seem that actions speak louder then words in this case.

Interesting post

One can't help but wonder why this hire would make sense for either side if the guys at the top really wanted Butch's head.  As you said, so many questions have risen and so many rumors that contradict each other have been flying around.  It only makes sense to wait for the facts to come out, but it does make sense to speculate that Butch is getting some kind of support if this hire was made.

let me get this straight.

let me get this straight. they aren't going to hire a replacement for Blake according to the head coach....but they did....or at least the head coach said they did....but the team spokesman said they didn't. who over there are you supposed to believe?

Blake's "replacement"

bppack:

Maybe the problem you have with following the proper characterization of Coiner's hire is one of semantics.  Blake was, I believe, officially listed as "Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach".  Coiner has been hired to "work with the defensive line".  Clearly, he is not being handed all of Blake's responsibilities.

Your getting twisted into

Your getting twisted into knots here dude. Its f--king football. This is not brain science.See th post below...... This is idiotic

Anybody see that Saunders

Anybody see that Saunders was dismissed from SC?  Guy got what he deserved.

Wow, check out this news I

Wow, check out this news I just found about Hawkins.  It might not affect UNC and the investigation, but it's not painting a pretty picture.

Also, reports are saying

Also, reports are saying that the NCAA came back to CH yesterday, and they have been questioning Robert Quinn.  Thank god for ESPN and SI.  Local media outlets have been mysteriously absent lately.

Haven't seen the reports on Quinn

But he's already been ruled ineligible for GT, so something is there.  This is also after he told the media that he was guilty of no academic infractions.  Let's just hope he didn't lie to the NCAA.

And hopefully we will see

And hopefully we will see Mr. Quinn on the field Saturday.

Saturday

Austin, Brown, Little, Quinn, McAdoo and Houston are all out for Saturday.  Deunta is currently listed as the starter on the depth chart, but it's been noted that it's pending NCAA clearance.  I've been hearing rumors that Burney has been running with the ones, but that was just from one source so I'm not sure if that's true.

You'd think

that the majority of the people commenting here would be smart enough to not totally mirror my opening comment.  There is no way you guys actually went/go to college.

Are you thinking what I'm

Are you thinking what I'm thinking Pinky????? All this investigating is bound to uncover the real 'truth'; UNC is trying to Take over the WORLD, HAhaHAHHAHhhaHAHHA

As I understand it -

The Rams Club will take care of Blake's 'departure money', so the University won't bear the expense, right ? I'm assuming the University will have to pay coach Coiner's salary, whatever that will be.

And the money flows!

Pay the disgraced Blake $72,000, and hire another coach essentially paying double for one position. The NC legislatures shoot down the UNC law that allowed state universities to charge in-state tuiiton for out of state athletes. How bogus was that, although NC State and others benefited. No real "oh nos" when it was repealed. So obviously, money abounds for UNC. Obviously Butch Davis did not suffer any consequences other than having other people and organizations making his players sit out. Will the "Educational Foundation" be raising its rates? Have to pay for a lot of extra stuff!

Hi P_Mike ...

I have a question for you Mike.  I know a number of “State fans” in ages from 30s to well past 60. Most/all are proud WPC members, longtime FB/BB season tickets holders, and quite knowledgeable of the history of the UNC-NCSU rivalry, the various controversial incidents and personalities on both sides.  They have all, certainly, been following this current UNC FB mess with interest. .... I was with one for several hours this AM.  We are all curious how this mess will be resolved and how the rivalry will evolve as a result.

None of them however have the clenched teeth venomous passion over this that you have exhibited from Day One.  I assume you fit the adult “State fan” description above except for that part about keeping it in a rational perspective.  Do you rant like this in person or is this just an exaggerated  persona that you act out here?  Please tell me it’s the latter. ..... oh, and good luck Thurs night.

Agent Pierce

honestly, if we all met at a bar for some beers everything would be AOK. sure we'd debate till the cows came home, but the hate and vile that sometimes rears its ugly head here would not come out.  Just like the situation you had this morning with a ncsu fan.

The Real Story Going Unreported

A new coach hired. A running back cleared to play. Wow. Terrific. What about the quiet "investigation" into academic fraud?

Mr. Blake

On the West Coast you have the Heisman Trophy winner taking out an entire national championship program.

Mr. Blake needs to be taken care of for the system was altered entirely by the waving of  the graduation requirement. This simple system meant athletes could not be contacted until they had a diploma. It was argued by defense lawyers for the NBA and NFL that under this old system the risk was on the athlete and the rewards went to the colleges and universities.Using a dubious application of the Curt Flood Rule from MLB,the court decided in favor of early graduation.

Few if any coaches, businessmen, military men and women,or professionals think its a great idea to form and train a team and then watch it self destruct. It sends the wrong message as members choose, often incorrectly,to go onto the NFL or NBA.

More than a couple of athletes wash out of the higher levels of competition. You can check the records of non-graduating athletes and count the numbers who find themselves adrift at age 22.The media won't publish this information, nor will the athletes listen since they only see successes on the televisions.

This new approach  ruins the morale and sacrifices of the students who work so hard to finish. No wonder athletes end up with no sense of responsibility toward anyone outside their family.

Inherent problems with NCAA Amateurism

The NCAA wants to promote "big time" Division One athletics, creating a massive bureaucracy, the climate for outlandish coaching incomes, Billions of Dollars in TV contracts, Logo and mascot clothing and paraphenalia sales and future professional employment.

At the same time, the professionals float around between coaching jobs, working for scouting combines, clothing/shoe/equipment marketing operations and broadcasters.

While coaching at the NCAA level, these professionals are to walk away  from their professional contacts,  and in the bargain enforce the NCAA's  rules which run counter to the pseudo-amateur world they have created.

Butch Davis has credentials of being able to clean up "dirty" programs.  But there is no way to recruit a staff without the risk that  someone, from laundry and locker room cleaning staff to assistant head coach, will continue long established contact with a verbotin NFL player's agent.

With the NCAA, there needs to be no actual misconduct, just a technical brush against NCAA rules is adequate to bring penalties, suspensions and fines.

Maybe Blake was responsible for actually crossing the line, maybe some UNC cheerleader or co-ed on one of the many UNC campuses, has been responsible for contacting a scholarship athlete in hope of a romantic relationship.

'Maybe several accused players did accept airfare and expenses from an old friend, now an NFL player represented by an agent, who is also assistant coach for the team.

With his track record, Butch Davis is not  neccessarily responsible for or implicated in  any of the alledged midsconduct.

On the other hand, Osama bin Laden is a logical candidate for a laundry room job, from which he has been ennabled to make bombs. Relax, those bombs are only to be used against  Aryan Nation's training camps.

But of course, the haters among us must attempt to cast insults and slurs against the democratically elected [With a huge majority] president, because he obviously has huge amounts of time to devote to undercutting UNC athletics while securing help from Erskine Bowles to control the federal deficit.

The official Treasury department report for fiscal year 2009-2010 reveals the first full year of the Obama/Biden administration produced reduced federal spending, a full 8% below the last full year of the Bush/Cheney administration.  This despite the awful economic collapse and two mis-managed wars Bush/Cheney left.

Maybe some of the haters can find grounds to attack Obama/Biden about that 8% reduction in federal spending.

Why is Blake being paid off?

If John Blake "resigned," why is UNC paying him the balance of his contract?  I thought if someone resigned, he lost whatever was coming to him.  If the university fires someone with a contract, then he could be bought out of his contract.  However, Blake is apparently responsible for the worst NCAA scandal that UNC has been involved in for the last 50 years.  Why didn't UNC just fire John Blake for cause and save that $74,000?  The players could probably use that extra cash now that Blake is gone.

Bernie Oakley!

Is this the one and only B-Town Bernie Oakley?

Scandal

What scandal? (duck)

simple answer

To avoid potential litigation that could result in legal fees dwarfing $74,000. Whether Blake's case would have any merit is irrelevant.

In other words...

That's 'Carolina Way-speak' for Hush Money

Well, yeah

Happens all the time.

Nice preemptive strike, Heels20

UNC really should have hired Gary Wichard. They would save money by cutting out the middle man.

I heard

that this guy is a liar, cheater and has strong ties with the tutor who most certainly wrote papers for the entire team.  He also set up Jim Valvano to get run out of NC State, and is a strong supporter of Osama Bin Laden and Barack Obama.  The university should be shut down for this hire.

In other words

A great hire and a perfect fit in Butch's corrupt program.
