CHAPEL HILL -- Who said North Carolina couldn't shoot? That the freshmen weren't living up to their ranking? That it would take a while longer to put it all together?

In beating No. 9 Michigan State 89-82 at the Smith Center on Tuesday,10th-ranked Carolina finally started living up to all those pre-season expectations - just in time to face two more top 25 teams this month.

It was supposed to be a revenge game for the Spartans (5-2), who returned three starters from a team that lost by an average of 26 points to UNC in last year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and national championship game. Instead, it was the Tar Heels, who returned only one starter from last year's title team but led by as many as 19 points in the second half, who took control early.

Iffy on their outside shooting through their first seven games, the Tar Heels (7-1) swished a whopping 63.3 percent in the first half, while holding the Spartans to only one field goal for a seven-minutes stretch. And the freshman class, dubbed one of the best in the country, finally showed why..

The game was tied 19-19 with about 12 minutes in the first half left when UNC's rookies scored all 11 points during an 11-2 run that gave it at 30-21 advantage. Small forward John Henson led the charge, first taking an offensive charge, then throwing down a dunk. After blocking a shot, trying to save it from going out of bounds with his soon-to-be-patented pass-it-between-the-legs move, only to to see MSU's Durrell Summers grab it an score - Henson was then fouled on a steal attempt after freshman teammate Dexter Strickland made a 3-pointer.

Freshman forward Travis Wear followed that with a 3-pointer, his brother David added a bucket, and Strickland scored again before a more veteran lineup took their place.

But that wasn't the end. Strickland, back in the game with about two minutes left, made a steal and passed it off to Ed Davis, who completed a 3-point play to give UNC a 43-32 lead. Then Strickland buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Tar Heels a 50-34 lead at the break.

Carolina's rapid-fire scoring pace slowed in the second half. And MSU tried to make a push, but they had trouble slowing big men Davis and Deon Thompson, especially when forward Delvon Roe, one of the biggest Spartans, fouled out with 7:21 left after picking up his 4th and 5th fouls within a 30-second period.

Still, MSU cut it to 80-72 with about two minutes left when Summers buried a 3-pointer, then 80-74 when Kalin Lucas followed with a shot of his own.

But a Davis dunk, and five key free throws but Larry Drew II gave the Tar Heels enough of a cushion to post their best win of the season.

Davis finished with a season-high 22 points, and  Drew II added a career-high 18. Morgan had 18 for MSU.

Contribution

Okay, I will do my part. We beat the Wolf Pack over the weekend and beat State last night.

Wow

Incredible game, incredible atmosphere. Why MSU wouldn't play zone is beyond me. Drew II didn't hold back, Strickland didn't hold back and Ed played an excellent game. We won this game and we did it in a convincing fashion. As Gatr said, we need to frickin finish. MSU had way too many easy lay-ups in the second half.

There were still many mistakes that need to be corrected (I think MSU had 15 steals?), but overall, this was one of the best atmospheres I've ever seen at the Smith Center. First half was as loud as the Kentucky and Dook games of last year. Can't wait to see if this carries over to Saturday when we face the Cats. I just hope we beat the everloving [enter four-letter expletive here] out of John Wall.

all in all

it was a great game for the Heels. I thought it was 50-50 this evening. for about 25-30 mins of the game it looked like the 2008-09 team on the floor. these fellas need to learn how to close ball games ... make FT's, continue playing defense.

Will Graves played well, my guy, Drew II, played great. Ed played really well. I thought the Wears logged some great minutes. Strickland finally showed his worth, too.

The 2nd half of the Nevada game has really woke these new Heels up, IMO. new team. keep it up!

Question is...

will they stay awake?

Shooting

As far as shooting goes, no way they can do this every game, but it would be nice if they can at least against big time opponents.

Finishing strong is what is needed, but it looked like State kind of woke up at the end as well.

b/c of age

I doubt they can maintain it.  heck, no team can for that matter.

this team will still lose 7 or 8 games this year.  certainly no less than 5 but no more than 10.

they'll slpit DUIke and ncsu will give em hell in one of the games.

Dook

I don't want to split with Dook, I want to sweep them and beat them by 30 in each game.  However, realistically...that won't happen.  We gave up way too many easy layups last night.  Our guys bite on the fake and give up easy back-door's way too often.  We struggle against zone defenses and despite Dook's lack of athleticism (there, I said it, Gottlieb was right), they have  the personnel to exploit our weaknesses.  Scheyer will be good for 25 points and Singler will have a good game also.  That being said, I think we'll take at least one from Dook and whether we win or lose the other, it's not going to be a blowout.

I think we beat Kentucky and lose to Texas.  I haven't looked over the schedule in a few weeks so don't bet the house on this, but I see us escaping non-conference play with only 2 losses.  I think 11 ACC wins is pretty realistic, and maybe even 12 or 13 if we can build off of last night throughout the whole year.

I've only watched about 2 minutes of NC State this year.  However, I've seen 2 years worth of Javi so I'm not worried about playing them.  They've got some good freshmen that I think will play with a lot of heart, but the man in the red jacket is so bad of a coach that the only reason he has his job is because Archie Miller is the next best alternative.  If Lowe can't win with Ryan Harrow next year, I believe he will be excommunicated from the college basketball world.

Javi

I have seen most of every State game this year. Javi has played consistently well.

Fair enough

You just have to wonder if he's going to keep playing well once State is facing tough competition every week.  There isn't much margin for error.

We'll see

That's what's great about sports. It's a new year every year and guys can get better. Javi had good games against good competition at times last year (one of the UNC games, I recall). But can he be consistent? That is what the next few months will tell us.

can't finish

maybe they did take some notes from the football team.

what the f*ck????????????

what was Deon Thompson thinking???????????????? a three pt attempt with under 2 to play and the lead is the smallest of the 2nd half (8 pts)?

I feel ...

like I am one year younger watching last years team play this evening!  looking good, guys!  looking good!

I guess the bball team was just waiting for the football regular season to get over!?
