NEW YORK -- North Carolina coach Roy Williams said his team didn't get very good leadership during its lackadaisical victory over Valparaiso last Sunday. Obviously, that stuck in senior Marcus Ginyard's craw - and he stuck it to No. 15 Ohio State.
Led by Ginyard's defense, determination and timely buckets, the sixth-ranked Tar Heels (4-0) survived a late-game surge by the Buckeyes, 77-73 Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in their first real test of the season.
They will play Syracuse, which topped No. 13 California in the earlier game, Saturday night at approximately 7:15 p.m. in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic.
Ginyard, particularly peeved by his performance against Valpo, was particularly intense from the outset. Matched up with OSU wing-turned-point-guard Evan Turner, he forced the junior to travel on the Buckeyes first possession, dove into the Tar Heels' bench to try to get to a loose ball on another, then drew a second foul from him with 11:30 left in the first half by drawing an offensive charge.
By halftime, Turner - who entered the game averaging 19 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists - had only six points and two rebounds. The Buckeyes (1-2) were shooting 29 percent (and 50 percent from the free throw line).
Meanwhile, Ginyard, who was not being guarded by Turner, had two 3-pointers - the first with 14:05 left in the first half, which gave his team its first double-digit lead (15-5), and the second with 2 seconds left in the first half, giving the Tar Heels a 38-24 lead at the break.
And the Tar Heels, who questioned their own intensity just four days before, fed off his energy.
There was Will Graves (14 points), mixing drives with his jump shots.
There was Tyler Zeller, giving that extra effort not just to score, but to get fouled, too.
There was point guard Larry Drew II, burying a 3-pointer with 6:10 left in the game, when Ohio State cut what was once a 19-point lead to 58-47.
Forward Deon Thompson - the other player Williams called out Sunday as needing to "step up and do what leaders do -- to get kids to concentrate, to get them to play very hard, too get them to focus and focus on the important things, not on the unimportant things" - did his part, too. Eleven of his 15 points came in the second half, including a key block and two free throws after Drew made that 3-pointer.
OSU cut its lead to 68-60 with less than two minutes left when guard David Lighty made a layup. But Ginyard -- who else? -- buried a 3-pointer. After the Buckeyes countered another 3-pointer, Ginyard made a steal that kept the Tar Heels ahead. OSU cut it to as little as 75-73, but Drew II buried two free throws in the final seconds to seal it.
Ginyard finished with 13 points -- and the unquestioned role of team leader.

No one in Ohio is smart
Tue, 11/24/2009 - 04:00 — Lisa_PNo one in Ohio is smart enough to get that payday lending (supply) is created by a demand (fewer middle class jobs, therefore more poverty) but apparently intelligence is illegal there too, and they've restricted any loan to 28% APR. Supply follows demand, which is true for many things cast as good or evil, which includes payday lending. Legislatures, even in Ohio, apparently aren't smart enough to know the difference between a financing charge and interest, but whatever. They're fine with driving out the jobs that are created (most paying over minimum wage) created by payday lending businesses in Ohio, and now more people are going need payday loans that they can't get – therefore making things worse.
They have some good things
Fri, 11/20/2009 - 13:41 — lawrencemartinThey have some good things going for them, but let's be honest, if OSU could have made their wide open shots or even made a free throw, this game would have been much different. I get the feeling that Syracuse won't come out so flat like OSU did, so UNC is gonna have a much bigger test in front of them.

I'm not shocked that OSU
Fri, 11/20/2009 - 11:36 — mad_maxI'm not shocked that OSU came back and made it so close. I watched the first half and the Buckeyes killed themselves. I know plenty of people will credit UNC's defense for OSU's low shooting percentage, but c'mon, they were missing wide open shots over and over again in the first half. Carolina didn't really look that impressive to me. They have some good things going for them, but let's be honest, if OSU could have made their wide open shots or even made a free throw, this game would have been much different. I get the feeling that Syracuse won't come out so flat like OSU did, so UNC is gonna have a much bigger test in front of them.
huh
Fri, 11/20/2009 - 13:43 — gvillegatrosu WAS NOT getting wide open looks from 3 pt land. there was a hand in there face on almost every shot if not a body in front of them. in the last minute or so, they were not getting any hands in the face. also, each team missed 7 FT's ... UNC shooting ONLY three more than OSU.
the game was close b/c UNC ALLOWED it to be close at the end. thx for watching, though!
I don't know what game you
Sat, 11/21/2009 - 14:11 — mad_maxI don't know what game you were watching, but OSU missed many, many uncontested shots in the first half of that game. Oh, and I guess Syracuse only spanked Carolina last night because UNC ALLOWED them to, right?
I'm sorry..
Fri, 11/20/2009 - 09:09 — UNC1998call me what you like. It's still football season, and I'm having a hard time paying solid attention to bball. I watched the end of the first half, and start of the 2nd. Then I saw the very end when OSU was fouling. To me the bottom line is this team must learn the killer instinct. When you have a team down just keep going. Obviously they let up on defense and let OSU back. With another game Friday let's hope the coaches can give them reason to improve.
too tired
Thu, 11/19/2009 - 23:48 — gvillegatrto read the article, but UNC quit playing defense after UNC was up 10 with one minute to play. So I hope the story is not told differently up above.
also, as well as I thought Drew II played this evening, minus the first couple of mins of the game, he was atrocious from the FT line. get on it, son!
