UNC coach Butch Davis raised the possibility that redshirt freshman Bryn Renner could start in the opener vs. LSU or that both incumbent T.J. Yates and Renner could play in a quarterback rotation.
Davis said Yates and Renner have both run the first-team offense in practice.
"We might want to try to play two quarterbacks," Davis said but added he was "adamantly against" using a series-by-series rotation.
Yates, who has 31 career starts in three seasons, said alternating reps in practice is not new. He and Cam Sexton used to do the same thing when Sexton was with the team in 2007 and 2008.
Yates said he was confident he would still be the starter for the opener. He said he wouldn't be crazy about sharing game reps with Renner, whose only college experience was the spring game.
"I wouldn't like it but whatever Coach Davis feels is right, I've got to go with it," Yates said.
Davis praised Yates' experience and Renner's athletic ability, particularly his arm strength and the competitive spirit of both.
"I love the way they are pushing each other and the way they are encouraging each other," Davis said.

Silver lining
Sat, 08/14/2010 - 11:16 — SurferJust an optimistic thought, with all of the discussion regarding the review or the investigation, whatever you want to call it, there has hardly been any talk about the actual FB program, players, etc... Now while all opponents will have film and scouting reports, there has not been much in the way of new schemes being developed or UNC weaknesses being discussed, other than the offense of course. Could this bode well for the team early on? Who knows, but I always look on the positive side of everything I can.
Hunch
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 13:06 — unc098Or maybe wishful thinking. I think we will see a different TJ out there this year. He has nothing to lose and has shown the ability to be productive. He has Renner biting his ankles and its his senior year. I know that some of his interceptions last year had to do with inexperienced WRs. His decision making was his undoing and maybe he has learned to not force plays that aren't there. The Spring game did not make a believer out of me however.
Yates the clueless.

Fri, 08/13/2010 - 12:32 — SurferGranted, Yates has made his share of mistakes, but he does have potential. Renner is the future. How those two things are handled will be interesting to watch.
Regarding Yates comment; I would not expect him to say, "Yes, I would like Renner to start". On the other hand, with JP asking the questions, it could have gone like this:
JP: "What do think about the first pregame meal being only vegetarian?"
TJ: "'I wouldn't like it, but whatever Coach Davis feels is right, I've got to go with it."
bETTER ANSWER
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 13:25 — JPDOhioTJ would have been better to make a comment similar to what Russell Wilson said when a reporter asked him about TOB's comment that Mike Glennon was competing with Russell for the starting job. (Set aside the fact that TOB's comment was coach-speak that is ridiculous on its face.)
Russell's response (and I am paraphrasing), "Competition makes everyone better. I can only worry about improving myself. If I do that, everything else takes care of itself."
Agree
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 13:56 — SurferA much better answer, but I am considering the source of information, regarding Yates comments. That was my only point.
Nice
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 10:38 — Heels20"Experience only matters when you get better because of it."
I like that.
Indeed
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 10:41 — YAR8packThe names Jay Davis, Daniel Evans, Harrison Beck, and Marcus Stone(d) come to mind for ample examples of said principle.
Daniel Evans
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 10:48 — Heels20It's a little off topic, but I feel like Evans was actually a decent QB who simply lacked the physicality to fit the position. He would have been okay with a good offensive line. He had a few 300+ yard games and led State to a few unexpected wins.
But I do agree, his experience was not nearly enough to earn him a starting spot over Russell Wilson (most obvious statement of all time).
Yeah and unrelated
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 11:25 — YAR8packI guess I just can't get over D. Evans throwing two TD passes for the other team in State's last bowl game.
What's your take on Stephen Rivers, Philip's lil bro, choosing to attend LSU? I guess State offered him. Kinda weird Stephen would go somewhere that doesn't air it out all the time.
I've heard Stephen's a bit more athletic than Philip and has a better delivery. I guess the delivery isn't that big of an issue since it worked out okay for Philip.
I hadn't heard about that
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 11:44 — Heels20Last I'd heard was that State and Tennessee had offered him, but I didn't know he already committed somewhere. I know he wanted to stay south and I feel like I remember hearing him say he wanted to go to an SEC school. I'll definitely have to check out his videos and see if he's like his brother.
Probably already seen this

The kid has a gun and rathe solid footwork to be in high school. Though I'm sure we know where that came from.
Still can't understand why he chose LSU. Oh well. Les can pull off some strange things sometimes.
It's crazy
Sat, 08/14/2010 - 11:23 — Heels20I thought Philip was one-of-a-kind when it came to that throwing motion and all the ambitious throws he makes. His brother seems to be the exact same player with a little less meat on him, but more mobility. I'm shocked Stephen hasn't gotten more love from the scouts.
Not sure why he picked LSU. I guess they were the best team to offer him, and I think he saw an opportunity at playing time. He's the only QB they've taken in his class and there was only one QB taken in the class ahead of him (a guy who isn't ranked too high). That's all I can come up with.
Two quarterbacks?
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 09:00 — PuddentainYou mentioned Renner. That's one. Who's the other one?
As the days keep going by
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 00:02 — GoHeels1984As the days keep going by and one keeps reading these stories and comments (80 % of posters being State College fans), it amuses me!
It only confirms the obsession of State fan of the University of North Carolina. Seems they don't even care about their own team as they never talk about it. They only want to talk about Carolina.
Take a step back Packer fans and look at you! As the ole saying goes.... "wherever you go.... there you are...."
State fan will never change. Jealous, obsessed, inferiority complex of the Univ of North Carolina.
Once this all blows over, the season starts, and the season comes to an end, I can't wait to see where UNC is and where Moo U is coming into the State College vs Carolina game. Can't wait to see the UNC fans comment on the stories when UNC wins big over the Packers sending State to another losing season and UNC to another winning season.
Perhaps by that point, the stories will all be about the State College coaching search?
Keep on obsessing Packer fans... Keep on obsessing.....
Misperception
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 07:48 — YAR8packDude, get over yourself. There are TWO NC State fans that have commented on this post, one of those is this reply.
Sure, others not drinking the blewberry kool aid have posted on other stories, but the majority of posts are by unc fans. Learn to count.
Sounds like someone's obsessed with Moo U, and that would be YOU.
Perhaps you should temper your rampant prognostication. You do realize every team in the ACC is 0-0? I know that's asking a lot of you, since you're always typing in some unchecked manner.
OK GO STATE!!!
Side note for anyone interested
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 21:13 — Heels20Anyone who hasn't had a chance to keep up, Carolina is up by about 30 right now in the 4th quarter of their second game in the Bahamas. Barnes, Bullock and Graves have all had to contribute in the post, with Barnes even running the 5 spot at times. Offense sounds great and we're converting more on offensive boards, but we've struggled defensively and gotten in some foul trouble. Zeller has played really well. Overall, sounds like an improved team.

Thu, 08/12/2010 - 21:44 — gvillegatrwhere are you getting this information?

Thu, 08/12/2010 - 20:52 — heelsno1Thank you for alerting JPG (...a.k.a. Geraldo...) to the QB race at UNC. He is mesmerized with the notion of kicking someone when they are down.
Geraldo and Toots (...a.k.a. CT) are so enthralled with the NCAA probe that they seem to have overlooked that the kick-off for college football will occur soon. Those two richly deserve each other. The only reason I read their articles is for sheer entertainment...it is weirdly amusing when someone can be so lame at "scoop journalism". But then again, where is Bob Woodward when you need him?
Ha, happy call out JPG whenever necessary
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 21:07 — Heels20In all honesty, I thought he was doing a good job of covering the investigation in the first couple days. Now it's just repetitive stories including one every now and then that leads the readers to premature conclusions. With the defense we have, this team is capable of winning a conference title, but that won't matter if we don't have QB play. That's why this story is important, and that's why Carolina fans want to know what's happening on the field. Just like State fans would like to hear about how the running game is going with new RBs and OLs, or if there is an unforeseen talent emerging in the secondary.
silverspoon
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 11:07 — izzykareemyea we actually already have been getting stories of just these very developments. our players haven't had improper contact with agents or even the "appearance of impropriety" so the media only has to focus on football when it comes to them
Yeah
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 11:15 — Heels20Your players haven't had improper contact with agents because there's no reason for an agent to talk to any of them.
hmm
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 11:27 — izzykareemWillie Young was drafted
Toney Baker signed a FA contract
Andre Brown was drafted
None of them had improper contact, hmmmmmmmmm.
However, your response was so predictable i left out that caveat, just to see if one of the little tarhole baby lambs would bite. don't get PWNT so easily next time.
And...
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 11:40 — Heels20None of those guys go to State. Furthermore, none of them were no where near first round status. It's not exactly like agents have crawled around NC State since 2005.
one in the same? ....
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 21:43 — gvillegatr"repetitive stories including one every now and then that leads the readers to premature conclusions."
sounds alot like tditty to me. excpet tditty prolly exaggerates a little more.
Davis said repeatedly...
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 20:08 — heelsno1the best players will be on the field. That being said, Yates will be a solid, experienced reserve this season.
How does a 3-year starter at QB generate a "goose egg" (...that is correct...zero points) for his offense in a Spring scrimmage?
Yates has had his chance...hand the reins over to someone who may produce. The evidence is in on TJ!
I agree
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 20:16 — Heels20However, there is one potential negative that could come by starting Renner. If he came out and had a rough start, losing all of his confidence, suddenly we have 2 QBs with no confidence. I'm not disagreeing with the people who have a mindset of "don't save for tomorrow what you can win with today," but you also don't want to ruin what could be a favorable situation.
Disagree
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 20:32 — heelsno1Every time, I will choose the superior talent at QB (...even with the risk of some damaged confidence) over a well-proven, inferior QB (...who repeatedly shows signs of arrogant and unjustified over-confidence).
Spot on. Remember Curry and
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 20:23 — unc098Spot on. Remember Curry and Durant. That was as potent an offensive as Carolina has put on the field in recent memory. Both TJ and Renner have different attributes. Renner can scramble and make plays happen as well as having a good arm. TJ is a deep ball threat. I hope that the coaching staff can take advantage of this situation to jump start this offense.
Sounds like TJ is being a little territorial but that is natural. If it can sharpen up his game so be it.
Damn
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 20:04 — mad_maxCarolina might have a QB this year. Hopefully, both will play throughout the season resulting in an inconsistent, messy offense.
This is great for TJ
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 19:23 — unc098We will see if he rises to the competition or folds. It won't take long. Renner will make mistakes but in the long run is a more talented QB.
Renner
Thu, 08/12/2010 - 18:27 — gvillegatrlooks like he may be closer to starting than most had envisioned this early in the campaign.
