Tudor's Take: What we learned Saturday

Bookmark and Share

Does anyone in the audience have Jeff Bowden’s cell phone number?

Wow, that’s exactly what a lot of Florida State fans have to be thinking today. Based on the Seminoles’ offensive performance, as designed by coordinator and head-coaching crown prince Jimbo Fisher in a 12-3 loss to Wake Forest in Doak-Campbell on Saturday, the program is in a bad way.

And this part of it can’t be blamed on Bobby Bowden, who was virtually forced at the end of a flaming spear to fire son Jeff and hire Fisher away from LSU to engineer the offense after the 2006 season. Papa B can advise, but the entire offense is in Fisher’s hands.

Whatever Fisher had in mind should have stayed in mind Saturday, judging from the way Wake’s defense completely blew up quarterbacks Christian Ponder and D’Vontrey Richardson, who combined for five interceptions that could have been seven.

But the Seminoles’ sterile passing game was equalled only by a ground attack that did almost nothing against Wake’s defensive front.

• From the opposite perspective, give Wake defensive assistants Tim Billings, Keith Henry and Brad Lambert (coordinator, linebackers) plenty of black-and-gold stars.

Even in that landmark 30-0 Wake win at Tallahassee in 2006, the Seminoles were able to escape with “only” four turnovers and did manage to muster up a couple of reasonably decent drives.

It’s a wild guess — nothing more, nothing less. But my gut today is telling me that Jim Grobe has just as good a chance of actually becoming FSU’s next head coach as Fisher.

• Frustrated North Carolina fans would be unwise to judge second-string quarterback Mike Paulus entirely on what they saw in his hurried meltdown against Virginia Tech.

Obviously, the Tar Heels would prefer to have T.J. Yates (ankle injury) ready in time for Saturday’s trip to Miami, but Paulus still has a promising upside.

Regardless of talent, it simply takes a while for inexperienced quarterbacks to adjust the quickness and complicated coverage schemes of opposing defensive units. Proof of that is as close as N.C. State’s Russell Wilson.

In the second half of the Wolfpack’s 30-24 win over East Carolina, Wilson no longer looked like the overwhelmed youngster that struggled against South Carolina and Clemson. He resisted the urge to panic by relying on his blockers and secondary receivers to give him a chance to flourish.

If the Tar Heels have to go with Paulus at Miami, he may not be ready enough to produce a win. But he will be better.

• The late Bear Bryant is generally credited with having coined the phrase, “Don’t let the same loss beat us twice.”

ECU coach Skip Holtz will have to deal with that possibility this week against Houston. So will Florida State, which has to face Colorado in Jacksonville.

If you’re trying to dig up a  trap game, keep an eye on Wake, which returns to Winston-Salem to face Navy. The Mids aren’t very good, but they are due and they are catching the Deacons between Florida State on front side and Clemson on the back end.

like ot or not, Chuck built

like ot or not, Chuck built NCSU (physically) into what it is today. I mean, lets remember, the NICE football field IS OFF CAMPUS!!

Lay off Chuck

For all the lack of discipline Chuck brought to the program, he brought enthusiasm, great players... and something that we all want Tom O'Brien to profit from...MUCH improved facilities. Consistently good performance is just a matter of time Pack Fans...

There is a 0% chance........

that Jim Grobe will be the next coach of FSU, so Carlton must not think much of Jimbo's chances.

the unc-state game should be

the unc-state game should be interesting....

bobby bowden

of course florida state's situation cna be blamed on bowden. at what point do you stop "owning" a job at a public university based on once great performance and drawing the 7 figures. he and paterno at penn state should follow the example of dean smith and john wooden (and i am sure there have been others, though football coaches may be more egocentric and egomaniacal by nature) of stepping down at an appropriate age, leaving your program reasonably well stocked for your successor and becoming a fan or just someone enjoying the next, natural stage of life. bowden and paterno seem to be obsessed by the wins record which will inevitably fall anyway as they keep lengthening the regular schedule. even jack welch stepped down at ge and he had created more shareholder value than any ceo in history. even nobel laureate faculty are given emeritus status at some point, generally no older than age 70.

Coach Smith "retired" too

Coach Smith "retired" too soon.  He did more than just leave his team stocked.  course Coach Gut didnt!  but it worked out well.  Coach Williams came home and the Tarheels are as well oiled as ever!  course, i'm worried about football right now!  (no joke!)  Coach Davis will bring supremacy to the Coastal Division next year ... unless Paulus can mature in a week.

We want Chuck

Since Jimbo isn't cutting it and Bobby needs to just go, I nominate Chuck Amato as Fla State's next head coach. He has experience as a head coach, is a fine motivator of young talent and is a flashy dresser as well. And, since discipline of any kind doesn't seem to be valued in Seminole Country, I would say Chucky Chest is a perfect candidate.

Chuck

I liked your comment about Chuck he is a distant cousin of mine and was at a funeral I was, last year in PA.  You cannot miss that man's presence when he walks in a room that is for sure!!!!!!!

Don't worry fans

UNC will be fine. Sure, it takes time for a young qb to get his "sea" legs. Paulus will acclimate himself to the gameday feel. There might be a bump or two, but it will work out in the end. When Yates recovers, the Heels will have the benefit of two first string qb's. That is a good thing. Atleast in the sane world.

i wanna be a guest blogger/prognosticator

Here's why i think ultimately Butch Davis will fail...and you are seeing it in Tallahaasee.

When a program consistently gets 4 and 5 star players in, you don't have to coach them a whole lot, a LB takes a bad angle on a running back but his speed nullifies the gaff and he still might make a tackle for a loss. A WR with 4.3 speed and a 40in vertical or 300 lb defensive tackles who run sub-5 40's etc etc. can simply out-athlete the guy across from them. THIS was the success that BD had in Miami and Bobby Bowden had at FSU.

When the recruits are more 3*'s that need some coaching, this is where the big bucks are earned. You either teach that guy or he is a liability.

Without Brandon Tate, UNC-CH could conceivably be 0-3 or 1-2 right now with a lone win coming against Rutgers who looks like they are back to their pre-Schiano days (Big East Cellar Dwellers). Because what Tate brings you is what you can't teach or coach, speed, world class speed. On that bomb against Rutgers did you see how he actually outran the CB, i.e. he created more separation, the CB never closed on him.

The tell-tale signs were all the stoopid penalites UNC-CH committed against VT, and some awfully boastful pre-season smack from alot of the players, a fake swagger if you will.

I mean if UNC can consistently bring in the 4 and 5* recruits then maybe it will work, but even Mack Brown took 3* players and made them into great teams.  I just like worrying Holes fans, so, its probably nothing.

 9/22/08, izzykareem said it first.

Izzy, Izzy, Izzy

1st I want to say there will be no smart arse comments in this post.

1.) Butch Davis was not privvy to coach any of those 4 and 5 star athletes you are claiming he did.  the biggest misconception about BD is he did.  he took the program over AFTER  the pell grant scandal and no one was coming to UM, that was good enough, till the end of his run.  alot of thiose guys (edgerin James) were products of his coaching rather than being stud athletes who came there like the days of old.

2.) that play Tate hit against Rutgers was a double move.  his speed/stop and go/shoulders was the reason he blew by the defender.

3.)a few of those penalties against UNC were bogus and BS.  call me A WHINE IF YOU LIKE.  the PF called against UNC, at midfield, on 3rd and long was total HS.  and then the "holding call" on 3rd and 10 at the enzone was a bigger load of crap.  the game could have easily been different.  UNC didnt play well at all after that and that was ultimatley what did them in, but still, those crap calls started the snow ball IMO.

i dont mind you playing fortune teller, I just mind when your story is badly misconstrued AND warped.

Sorry Izzy

but I have to disagree on UNC's long term prospects.

I do agree that the preseason hype was over the top for the Tar Heels. Their lack of depth is their achilles heel, as we are seeing now with Yates going down. I see tough times ahead for Paulus unless UNC can get its running game going. And that is questionable at best.

Long term, however, I think Butch Davis will succeed because I believe he will be able to recruit great players to UNC. Times are different now in that the talent is spread a lot more evenly throughout the country. And, although my fellow Pack fans will hate me for saying this, Butch has a university that is not a tough sell.

fsu

they looked like they were playing roller derby half the time and actually, Wake looked pretty sloppy too.

where's tysiac...

...was he out partying with the wolfpack this weekend? Toots (as JPG calls you), do you mind strolling down to Tysiac's cubicle and asking him why there is no injury report on Nate Irving. And give a cookie to Robbi Pickeral while you're at it, it seems she's been camped out holding a vigil over in the Chapel Hill hospital or near their training facility worried to death about T.J and posting status updates on his precious ankle and the mindset of his trusty sidekick Paulus

Just glad to see good ol'

Just glad to see good ol' Chuck on the sidelines getting beaten. Hey, he had a good run at NCSU's expense. Hopefully O'Brien will earn his tenure.

another thing I learned

when Chuck Amato......bless his soul.....came to State, he brought the same style of undisciplined penalty prone play that seems to permeate the FSU program. Nothing new there either,
