N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien’s decision to start Russell Wilson over Harrison Beck at quarterback on Saturday in Clemson likely will be debated by many Wolfpack fans right up to game time and possibly after the closing bell.
It should be, too. Based on Beck’s performance in last weekend’s win over William & Mary, there’s a legitimate argument for sticking with him. And if there’s ever been a fan base deserving of a voice, it’s the Wolfpackers. Their loyalty — in football and basketball — is far beyond the call of duty.
But from O’Brien’s perspective, going back to Wilson is the percentage play now that we understand what really took place in the team’s practice sessions last spring and during preseason camp.
Amid serious secrecy, State’s offensive staff made radical schematic changes from its previous tactics by installing a full-blown option package that obviously revolved around the speedy Wilson’s ability to make defensive reads while on his feet and in the fact of defensive pressure.
The move, no doubt, reflected great reservation about the offensive line’s chances to adequately protect a traditional passing game and execute basic I-formation rushing plays.
Due to Wilson’s early-game head injury at South Carolina and running back Jamille Eugene’s ongoing injury problems, there’s still no way to actually determine whether the offense is functional. That still could be the case after the Clemson game, too.
But O’Brien invested a lot of time in developing the strategy, and he simply has to know if the system will work. The longer he waits, the less likely the chance that the season can be salvaged. Up next are games against East Carolina and South Florida, both of which have defenses good enough to victimize an offense in flux.
The upside for the Pack is that there’s a reasonably viable Plan-B with Beck and Daniel Evans should Wilson sustain another injury and the option series has to be ditched. While neither is the ideal alternative, both at least have experience in the offense of ‘07.
All of this amounts to one of the biggest gambles in recent State history. From the day Bo Rein left to take the LSU job after the 1979 season, the Pack basically operated in an I-formation design.
At times and with good quarterbacking, the “I” worked fine. It’s the formation that O’Brien probably will go back to next season when Mike Glennon serves out his redshirt sentence.
But for now, the coach and his staff have little choice except to play out the schedule as far as possible with their original intent.
What O’Brien really had in mind for ‘08 was buying time with an offense that few of his opponents were expecting. It may not work. Odds are, it won’t. Clemson is favored by 18 points either way. But O’Brien made the decision to go optional last spring, and you can’t blame him for trying to find out if the 180 was worth it.

NCSU and DUIke will be called something less than the mediocrity bowl. mediocrity would be .500
ACC Mediocrity Bowl
Thu, 09/11/2008 - 16:02 — JPDOhioChange NC State/DUIke to NC State/UNC and I will agree with you.
Another Loss...
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 18:38 — Anonymous (not verified)Does not matter...The next chance at a win will be Maryland on Oct 25th...By then no one will be watching. The QB decision is merely a stall in the "Wait 'til next season" athletics program at NC State. I really do not see any more than 3 wins and that assumes that Cutcliffe does not out coach O'Brien on Nov 8th...Talk about the Mediocrity Bowl!
Cheap Shots
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 16:08 — Anonymous (not verified)Let's also remember that Wilson was the victim of 2, maybe 3 late hits that should have been 15 yard penalties. Those, no doubt, set him up for the knee to the head that knocked him out. Where were the refs on those hits?! Aren't they supposed to be protecting the OB's?!
Tudor take on NCSU Offense
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 14:53 — Sam (not verified)I think we are giving Tudor to much credit for his BFO(Blinding Flash of the Obvious), I would add that the commitment to Russell has a lot more to do with TOB's integrity and a crappy Offensive line than in does his selfish desire to assess whether or not his scheme change will work. It's really pretty simple, TOB knows we do not have a good OL with the ability to sustain blocks and provide time in the pocket, thus the scheme change... he is doing what good leaders and coaches do -making the best of what he has and right now that is a QB that has a proven ability to change bad plays to good ones with his feet...
I've alerted the police
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 13:41 — MikeB (not verified)What have you done with the real Caulton Tudor!?
In all seriousness, the positive nod to the Wolfpack faithful in paragraph two is much appreciated, especially given the recent tension between us. It will be interesting to see how the new offense takes shape given it will be missing or will have lost significant time at the starting (and backup) RB, QB, WR, and TE positions.
I'd prefer to see Beck play,
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 13:33 — wolfpack2013 (not verified)I'd prefer to see Beck play, but Wilson more adept with the offense we have. Because of the problems on the OL, a scrambler is almost necessary to have.
nice article
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 13:24 — izzykareemActually alot of State fans have been complaining that TOB/Bible are "stuck". How asanine! As soon as i saw Russell make that first option read i realized the gravity of what i was seeing, i can't believe no one else saw this and kudos mr. tudor for recognizing the tremendous sea-change that took place.
Just Win Pack!

System
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 09:41 — charles77Well the facts are we don't even know if this will work. We lost Wilson in the 1st game, and we have been depleted at the RB position. I believe O'Brien already knew this was going to be a tough season, so he thought he would just get through it with a new system, and next season bring in Glennon, and go back to his traditional offense. But, when Russell Wilson went down in Columbia, everything was kinda thrown out the window. I do like the fact that TOB is sticking with his original choice as the starter, remember it was 0-0 when he went down, and from what I saw, the 'Pack was starting to move the ball. So we will see, either way I think Daniel Evans saw his last action on the field. Beck is the clear cut #2 QB on this team.
Go 'Pack!!!
the Buckeye (JPDOhio) taking

Busted
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 14:34 — JPDOhioIt's not often you get a chance to kill two birds with one stone. I mainly wanted to complement O'Brien, but I have to admit enjoying Richie from Michie's troubles in the big house. My Saturday will be a success if the Buckeyes play USC tough, the Pack does the same at Clemson and ND beats Michigan in the Mediocrity Bowl.
Good sign
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 09:29 — JPDOhioAt least Coach O'Brien is working with what he has. Too many coaches stick with a system they are comfortable with, whether they have the personnel for it or not. O'Brien's plan may or may not work, but it is definitely worth sticking with until we know for sure.
you've got to remember
Wed, 09/10/2008 - 08:19 — trust TOB (not verified)you've got to remember in the USC game the pack had just run the ball 7 straight times and was at the USC 36 yard line. We all know what happened after that. If Wilson hadn't got hurt it looked like they were going to score. My point is that it was working and if they had scored on that series it could have been a different outcome.
