ACC Now

Tony Bennett, meet the ACC

Bookmark and Share

Welcome to the ACC, Tony Bennett. We’re not sure if the snail’s pace basketball you used to become one of the nation’s hottest coaches in 2007 and 2008 will work at Virginia.

But you seemed like a decent guy when we met you in Charlotte last year for the NCAA Tournament regional, and after suffering through four seasons of Dave Leitao, Virginia needs a decent guy.

In a little more than a month, you will find yourself seated in a Ritz Carlton conference room on Amelia Island near Jacksonville, Fla., with the rest of the ACC’s coaches. Here’s what you need to know about them as you join the conference:

Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams: They are not as clumsy as they look in their “Guitar Hero” TV commercial guest spot. K likes fine wine and Roy likes to play golf. And though they may seem friendly, Roy will run circles around you in recruiting and K will simply outcoach you during the course of a game.

Sidney Lowe: He’s a really loud whistler. And he's a strong Xs and Os coach. His ability to build a program, though, has yet to be proven.

Oliver Purnell: You don’t want to play his team in early January. You do want to play Clemson in late February or March. It may be because the Tigers’ full-court press wears them out.

Paul Hewitt: Don’t get too close to him, because he might not be around too long. He’s a heck of a recruiter and a highly principled leader in the college basketball world, but his teams are never as good as the sum of their parts.

Gary Williams: If you could put Hewitt in charge of recruiting and Williams in charge of game coaching, you’d have one of the strongest programs in the country. Williams might be the best Xs and Os guy in Division I, and he’s not a maniac away from the court even though he looks like one while he’s coaching.

Al Skinner: Here’s another guy who will flat-out take your lunch. How he beat North Carolina and Duke with a team that consisted of Tyrese Rice and not much else this season is almost impossible to figure.

Seth Greenberg: This is the coach in the ACC you’d most want to have a beer with. Unless you were a referee. For some reason, he always seems like he thinks the officiating tilts against his team.

Leonard Hamilton: If you need a primer on how to coach defense in the ACC, this is your guy. If you’re interested in offense, he wouldn't be at the top of the list.

Frank Haith: He’s still a good coach even though his team underachieved this season. But when you see him, be thankful you landed where you did. Miami is just not a college basketball town.

Dino Gaudio: Don’t worry if he doesn’t have much to say. He’s still trying to figure out how a team with three future first-round NBA draft picks could get hammered by Cleveland State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

One more piece of advice, Tony. Make sure you’re wearing a sweater when you leave your room at the Ritz for the conference room, which is the coldest place in the ACC region other than the Greensboro Coliseum media room.

In the meantime, good luck getting started at Virginia. The new arena there is gorgeous and the fans will be excited to have you around. It won’t be difficult to generate more good will than Leitao did, so you should have a nice grace period as you prepare to build a winner when you start without much talent.

Nice Column

Well although we agree on what team to pull for I must disagree with the other tarheel fan. This is a column, meant to be entertaining and informative. I find this article both. My only disappointment is with the selection of Bennett. I was looking forward to Virginia finally getting a quality coach that was fun to beat like Terry Holland. Even though he is a dookie, I wish they could have gotten Capel. I suspect that Bennett is going to have a hard time recruting on the east coast.

Probably a good pick

Tony Bennett is probably a good pick. With coaching changes at Kentucky and maybe UConn and Arizona, a big chain reaction is about to take place across the country. Getting their guy early was a good move. UVa got a coach who was good enough to get offered the Indiana job before Tom Crean. It's probably a good time for Tony Bennett to make a move as the talent he had returning in Pullman would probably not get them in the postseason next year. Virginia has nice new facilities and Bennett gets a fresh start. He's a likeable guy unlike Dave Leitao so he'll probably have a longer honeymoon period to get this program off the ground. He's not an east coast guy though so I'm wondering how he's going to recruit at UVa. I hope for his sake he makes some good staff choices.

Not exactly a top-notch pick. What a surprise!!

It's interesting how last week, you were talking like coaches from big-time schoools would drop everything to come to the super-wonderful, "We-invented-basketball" ACC. And all you end up getting is another relatively unknown, coach-on-the rise. Not that Bennett's a bad coach. It's just that you reporters promote the ACC like it's several notches above all other leagues, to the point that even a bad job like Virginia's was supposed to attract the best candidates around the land.

I swear, when Coach K eventually retires from Duke, the 2nd paragraph of the N&O's story will be something like this: "First on Duke's list for a replacement is Jesus Christ. He hasn't said publickly if he's interested in the job, but sources tell the N&O that Our Lord and Savior will have a hard time turning down such a great job".

What a surprise!!

You call yourself "ImpartiallyObservant" - my guess is that those who read your comments will not agree.

while not true

I did find it hilarious and it made me laugh out loud!

Good Point

Well, there is that. It was funny.

Tony Bennett, meet the ACC

As "you will find yourself seated in a Ritz Carlton conference room on Amelia Island near Jacksonville, Fla., with the rest of the ACC’s coaches", remember the money that paid for your luxury accomodations should have been used to support your
school's academics.
College sports, the biggest taxpayer and student rip-off around.

igliigli - What??

Yours MIGHT have been a moderately interesting post if you'd made a case for your premise, which you did not.

Rip off?

In the 2006-2007 men's basketball season, the University of North Carolina made a profit of 17 million dollars.  The Duke basketball team earned its school almost 15 million.  NC State generated about 8 million.

This does not even include the extra donations by alumni to the universities that are generated from the excitement that comes with successful athletic programs.  Students enjoy it, alumni enjoy it, and it generates interest in universities.

 Do your research.

Great Reporting

That was in-depth reporting. That must have taken like 5 minutes for you to write that. Where did you find all that detailed information about Bennett? Coming from Washington State I'm sure everyone in NC knows all about the guy. Thanks for telling us Roy likes golf, K likes wine, and you've been to a Ritz Carlton. Impressive sports reporting there.
