There is so much hate between schools and fans in the community. If you had any sense at all you would know what the rivalry is all about. But from reading your past posts I believe that your a NC State fan. (excuse me if im wrong). Maybe your just a little upset because your an ABC'er and your a little ticked that Carolina is at the top.. NC State will always be 3rd.. you should know that by now..
so back when Carolina was horrible and went 8-20, that kept Duke from burning their benches?? noo!

I've lived here in the state of North Carolina my entire life. I grew up in the 80s and early 90s, when Duke was just getting geared up. At the time, THE rivalry in North Carolina was State/Carolina. Duke was what State is now -- third rung on the ladder, fighting Wake for the scraps of whatever college basketball fans were leftover after those two fanbases were accounted for.
"Duke is puke, Wake is fake...the one I hate is N.C. State!"
If you'd grown up in this state, you'd know that was the rallying call of Carolina fans in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.
Duke had some success in the 60s with Vic Bubas (one of Everette Case's understudies), and no doubt the close proximity had something to do with keeping the rivalry alive during Duke's down days.
But don't try and pretend that Duke/Carolina has ALWAYS been THE rivalry in this state, because that's an outright fallacy.
And all it will take for Duke/Carolina to fall off the radar as THE ZOMG GREATEST THING EVARRRRRRR is for one of the two teams to experience what Carolina went through under Doherty. Ever wondered why Maryland has a guaranteed home-and-home in the ACC? It's because they filled the rivalry void created by Carolina when they went in the sh*tter. Sure, Duke hated Carolina to a degree, too, but it was more the way y'all hate State now...fun, but not GREAT if the other team isn't competitive. Maryland was peaking at the time the ACC expanded and thusly they were tabbed as Duke's other guaranteed "rival."
I could give two craps about Duke. They're a private school filled with out-of-staters who get their over-valued diplomas (if you think Carolina has issues with grade inflation, take a look at Duke!) and high tail it back to where they came from. I can't wait for K to break the wins record, hang it up and pass it off to Johnny D and watch him fail as nearly every one of his coaching tree has at other schools. Call me crazy, but I think if Sidney can keep recruiting like he has for the classes of 2009 and 2010, then he may be poised to return State to the rightful place as Carolina primary -- and most hated -- rival.
NC State will always be 3rd.. you should know that by now..
You think I lack perspective...I've given you some prespective as how things used to be in this state, and how they can return to that in the future.
