Tate at UNC

Bookmark and Share

As scheduled, freshman Donavan Tate arrived at UNC on Saturday and has been attending meetings but is not participating in practice, a school spokesman said.

Tate was the third overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft in June and has until Aug. 17 to negotiate a contract with the San Diego Padres.

His options include signing a deal with the Padres, enrolling at UNC or neither and re-entering the MLB Draft in 2010. If Tate enrolls at UNC, he would not be eligible for the MLB Draft until after his third season (2012).

Tate can practice with UNC (without enrolling) and still negotiate with the Padres without compromising his baseball status with the NCAA.

Tate's listed at quarterback on UNC's roster and media guide. He played both quarterback and safety in high school in Cartersville, Ga.

Dreaming

As much as I would like to see Donavan at UNC, it is just hard to imagine that as the third pick in the draft, that he wouldn't sign with the Padres by the 17th. He certainly would not delay, one year or three, in order to improve his draft status, but not necessarily needing the money and wanting to have a college experience might be enough to see him suit up for UNC...... I know, I know, just wishful thinking on my part.

Hmmm.

Is Tate allowed to practice if he is not enrolled? And if he does enroll, will he be a two sport athlete? If he doesn't play baseball for UNC, I think he will be hurting his chances for a big payday big time.

Case in point- Andrew Brackman is struggling in pro ball. He still was a first round draft pick, but I am convinced he hurt himself by playing basketball. I would hate to see the same thing happen to Tate.

enroll v practice

He can practice but once he enrolls (classes start after the Aug. 17 deadline), he basically signs a three-year deal with UNC.

My guess is the Padres, or Scott Boras, wouldn't be too thrilled if he pulled a hammy in football practice.

When you play hardball...

you assume the risk. The Padres and Mr. Boras would have no one to blame but themselves.

I just hope that, whatever decision the kid makes, it works out for him.

I wish ...

this was how it was in baskets.  don't come to college and if you do, you are here for a minimum of three years.

Agreed

But it won't happen, because:

1. It makes too much sense, and,

2. In spite of their PSA's, the NBA doesn't care.

Glad that he showed up...

but it's a bad sign that he's not practicing. I would love for this guy to play, but it's probably in his best interest financially to take the money and run.
