Boston College, Maryland, Miami and Virginia Tech have a funny way of showing they want to be in the NCAA Tournament. All four ACC teams lost this week, and in the case of Miami and Virginia Tech, a pair of must-win games, albeit to different quality of opponents.
Miami's 78-68 loss at Georgia Tech on Wednesday night is the most puzzling. At 1-13, Georgia Tech had put a stamp on its season months ago. At 6-8, Miami was charging to .500 in the league and putting itself in position for an at-large bid. Instead, Lewis Clinch goes for 30 for GT and the dream of a 15-loss ACC team ends.
At least Virginia Tech (to UNC) and Maryland (Wake Forest) lost to good teams. Over in the Big East, Georgetown dropped an overtime game to St. John's on Tuesday and Cincinnati lost to South Florida on the same day.
Boston College has wins over UNC and Duke in its back-pocket (we know what that means), plus an 8-7 conference mark. The Eagles have a margin of error to fumble a winnable game like they did on Wednesday at N.C. State. Miami, Virginia Tech certainly don't while Maryland would be wise to ignore Miami's example and take care of business against the bottom of the league at Virginia on Saturday.

Thu, 03/05/2009 - 20:50 — gvillegatrthey will not look at how well ncsu is or is not playing. they will see they are the 10th best team in the ACC and BC lost to them when it matters most.
these mid level teams are limping home when they should be sprinting. it is ashame.
