Jordan Steffy will start at quarterback for Maryland, coach Ralph Friedgen said Monday. Steffy, who started the first five games in 2007 before suffering a concussion, beat out Chris Turner and Josh Portis for the No. 1 slot.
Friedgen said Portis would be the backup and got some game reps. That leaves Turner, who started the second half of the season in Steffy's stead, fall to three on the depth chart. Steffy threw two touchdowns and four picks in five starts.
Turner connected on seven TDs, with seven INTs, in eight starts. Portis, a transfer from Florida, was academically ineligible after he was caught cheating on a test.
The Terps, 6-7 a year ago, open with Division I-AA runner-up Delaware on Aug. 30
