State CB Smith out for the season

GREENSBORO N.C. State cornerback Rashard Smith will miss the entire season because of a knee injury, coach Tom O’Brien said.

“Rashard had surgery last week,’’ O’Brien said Monday afternoon at the ACC Kickoff. “He had, basically, the Toney Baker surgery, and he’ll be out for the year.”

Smith played in five games as a true freshman last season, and was expected to compete for a starting slot this year.

Asked how much of an impact the Georgia native’s absence would make, O’Brien said: “Certainly it is [a blow] to the secondary when you think of all the young kids back there, and you already know that Jarvis Byrd is out until at least November because of his injury…you played five freshmen back there last year, and you’ve already lost two of them, that’s a tough thing for us.

"But once again, it’s something that we know about now. But we’re still way ahead of where we were last year [as far as injuries], so we’re looking for a normal year, maybe?”

And so it begins...

you'd think

there'd be some depth at ncsu by now regardless of injuries.

there is

But they are awful young. On the first two-deep, every starter in the secondary was a sophomore. The preseason prediction of 4th place in the division is very reasonable, because there is too much uncertainty over how well these guys have progressed.

Hate to hear this

This is definitely a blow to the secondary, but if I remember correctly, he also carried some of the duties on special teams.  I'm not even sure who is replacement is at this point.  State fans might be seeing some more of Monk this year.

Here we go

Too bad for Rashard, who showed some promise last year. Hopefully, he can fully recover this year and be 100% in the future.

Also notice that R.J. Mattes is not on the two-deep organization chart. I don't recall if any announcement has been made about his recovery, but hopefully he is not lost for the season as well.

J.R. Sweezy is not on the two-deep either. No shock there.

Where did you see the Orgazational chart at on this site or another one?
