ACC Now

Spring football crowds vary

Bookmark and Share

Virginia Tech closed out spring football practice on Saturday with 41,000 showing up for a scrimmage. The Hokies topped Florida State's turnout of 36,000 for its spring game.

Attendance at a spring game indicates devotion, or a lack of alternatives. Either way, here's how the ACC schools fared in the spring:

Virginia Tech    40,000
Florida State    36,000
Clemson    24,000
N.C. State    21,075
Maryland    10,323
Georgia Tech    8,500
Virginia    8,000
Duke    4,162
UNC    2,000

Miami, Wake Forest and Boston College did not give attendance figures for their respective spring games. Safe to say if it was near Virginia Tech's neighborhood, we would have heard about it.

Kinda like Ohio State's preposterous turnout. 95,722? Really? Imagine what would happen if the Buckeyes actually won a game of consequence.

Farmasi

Thank you

from 40000 to 2000, there is a big discrepancy, lol.. People decide which ones are interesting and which ones are not.

Just the Facts

In general, I like NC State athletics and in particular, I enjoy the tailgating atmosphere for football in Raleigh. It is a longstanding and special rivalry. State blasted UNC last Nov 22 in the same fashion that they whipped Wake Forest the week before. Russell Wilson is a truly gifted player, and Coach O'Brien appears to have his program on track. Congratulations to State on a couple of solid wins and a strong second half of the 2008 football season.

With that said, it is annoying to hear some of the Wolfpack fans assert this mistaken notion of pigskin superiority over the Tar Heels. According to James Howell's database, here are the all-time results in the State/Carolina football rivalry:

Of the 89 football games played, there have been 5 ties. Regarding the other 84 contests, UNC won 55 and lost 29 (including the 2008 blowout). That is a winning percentage of 65% for the Tar Heels!

I really could care less about how many fans show up for any scrimmage, but it is a real blast watching the Heels top NC State 2 out of every 3 times that they play each other in football.

Just the Facts III

Since 2002 the Pack has a 4-3 record vs UNC so I do see it getting closer than what it is espically if BD keeps downplaying this rivalry game and TOB keeps getting the players that he wants.

Just the facts II

Both programs have terrific coaches and are on the rise. A State-UNC ACC Championship game is not out of the question, as soon as this fall perhaps. That may be pushing it a bit, but if both teams stay relatively healthy, they will be factors.

So, by all means, keep the carping coming. It makes this site worth coming to. The banter will likely get better, because these programs will be going after it for years to come.

Right On

Well said, heels!

Yeah!

Guess state fans like to see their team playing with themselves because that's one game they can't lose. They last had a winning season when?

Last season

That would be last season...oh wait, mmm.. they were 6-7, but they beat ECU, Duke, WF and UNC so they are the "State Champs", a "dominating program on the rise". Where was the parade? "Walk of Champions" Give me a break.

Yay!

What a beautiful Wednesday!

Game of importance?

I don't understand why people think Ohio State fans shouldn't be proud of their program. Look at what Tressel and Ohio State has accomplished since 2002

1 National Championship
3 National Championship games
5 Big 10 Championships
1 Heisman
Most individual awards of any program
#1 in NFL draft picks
#1 in NFL 1st round draft picks
6-1 vs Michigan
3-3 BCS games (T1st for most appearances)
#4 in win % (#3 for BCS teams)
#4 in games won (#3 for BCS teams)
5 top 5 finishes
6 top 10 finishes

So, to say that Ohio State hasn't won anything of importance is beyond retarded.

Yawn

You beat Michigan. Congratulations.

Do these scores ring any bells — 41-14, 38-24 and 35-3?

Seriously, go back into hiding.

Yawn?

I assume you're tired because your career has never progressed beyond watching ACC football games for 11 years.

In Big Ten country, defeating your arch-rival and winning the conference is considered to be "of consequence." Please stick to commenting on the irrelevant football games you devote your life to every weekend in the fall and keep the uninformed commentary about Big Ten football to yourself.

Irrelevant football games??

your entire conference is irrelevant, my man.  imagine if osu was not in the big televen ...

If OSU was in the ACC...

The Buckeyes would be in or close to the championship game every year. Yes, the Big Ten is not that strong top to bottom, but like it or not, OSU has enough talent to compete anywhere. And you can snicker all you want about their failures in the last two BCS Championships they were in, but they did what they needed to do to get there, which is no small feat.

I don't worship at the Church of Tressel (although I have met and like the guy), but most programs would love to have the consistent success that the Buckeyes have. The rest is sour grapes.

good lawyer?

u'd make a good one!

but they (osu) are only as good as their conference.  all their fans do is grand stand and all they (osu football team) ever do is lose important football games one after another.

Tack on the gift the refs gave osu vs Miami, Fla and you get no love from anyone outside of your fans.

Sour grapes, Gatr

1. Not the first time someone has compared me to a lawyer. For the record, I am not one and haven't taken that for the insult that it is in a long time. ;-)

2. I don't know a single OSU fan who is looking for love from anyone outside of the fan base. And if I was looking for love, you know this is the last place I would come. LOL

3. Fact is that you can't make the case that the ACC is any better than the Big Ten in football. (No challenge here like basketball, which is a no brainer). So, until the Tar Heels get to the point in football to even have a chance to lose important games like the Buckeyes do, it still all comes down to sour grapes.

And that, my relevant Blue friend, is the truth.

contraire mon fraire

I never said anything about the ACC in football.  I was just talking about ohio state college.

I know the ACC is below par in football although it is most def on the rise.  how high this yeast (conference) will rise, I dunno ...

2000, really?

I find it funny that the attendance figure released from the tarhole PR machine is 2000. Obviously, I didn't go to it, but I have yet to see a picture that shows more than a dozen fans sitting in a sea of aluminum. Kind of reminded me of the second half of the beat down from last year. Anyone care to prove me wrong?

THE LOYAL 2000

These 2000 were probably the same 2000 dressed in blue and sitting in the stands to watch the clock tick down to zero and read the final tally 41-10.  Reckon?

Timing

Let's remember that UNC's game was on March 28 and Carolina still had some basketball to play. Had the game been later, say April 11, I would expect that the numbers would have been higher.

I call B.S.!!!

Carolina's spring game was on SUNDAY during the Final Four weekend. They played basketball on Saturday and then on Monday. Sunday was an open day. Unless all the Carolina fans were in Detroit (quite a few were), there's no excuse for such a poor turnout. Little do they remember how their fans made Mack Brown feel by leaving a game (that was still undecided) to go to a Blue-White basketball game. I've heard Mack never got over that.

Football is second to basketball at Carolina and probably always will be. But to only bring out 2,000 fans is ridiculous!

Sorry

Call yourself whatever you want, but you are wrong on the date. The UNC Spring game was Saturday, March 28, 2009, which was the weekend, BEFORE the final four. The point being that there was still bb to play, unlike other places where the season was long over.

I agree

If it wasn't for basketball then it would have doubled and been about 4,000!! You know, still shy of Duke's attendance.

UNC fans have never cared about football, which is why they'll be mired in suck as coaches like Brown & Davis move on to another job the minute they decide they want to.

Ohio State

As an ACC football writer, you're obviously an authority on games of consequence. In the last 8 years, Ohio State is 7-1 against its arch-rival, won a national championship, made two other national championship appearances, and appeared in three other BCS bowl games (winning two). In the future, please stick to commenting on subjects on which you're at least somewhat informed.

injury report

hurt feelings on isle 9

Decent effort...

...but I'm assuming you mean "aisle" 9. Nice try, buffoon.

hey jerk

ever heard of a typo? Maybe you should check yourself in on a deserted "isle" and leave the ACC fans here alone.

Who lashes out at somebody over a missed letter 'a'? Oh that's right, someone who just had their self=esteem shaken.

Huh?

What is "self=esteem"? I can't possibly have a rational discussion with someone who can barely communicate.

I kind of wanted to go to UNC's...

but daughter's b-day was on that day. UNC was having a very festive day, and I'm surprised it didn't bring more people out. I recently read in a booster magazine for UNC that last year 7,178 Rams Club members bought 29,385 of the 36,262 season tickets sold. I hope both the Rams Club and the public buy more this coming season. I know the economy is a burden, but sports is a wonderful outlet.

Great turnout by State can't

Great turnout by State can't wait for the season to start!
