Butch Davis promised it would work out.
With Angelo Hadley's exit from the UNC football program before he got there, the Tar Heels coach was right. His over-recruiting strategy balanced out in the end.
What was once a 17-scholarship discrepancy is likely to work out to an even 24 signees to 24 available scholarships.
Rewind to December — UNC had 29 commitments with 12 seniors departing the program.
Then receiver Hakeem Nicks left early for the NFL (13 departures).
Four more players, including quarterback Cam Sexton, graduated and left the program (17). Three players received a medical hardship (20). Four players were dismissed from the team (24).
Hadley's effective departure (released from his letter of intent on Thursday) means there are 28 signees for 24 scholarships. Freshmen Joshua Adams and Kevin Reddick have already enrolled which means it's really 26 players for 22 spots.
Miller Safrit, Scout.com's national editor, said the final four spots will likely be resolved before August.
Ray-Ray Davis, a receiver from Monroe, is prepared to go to junior college in Hutchinson, Kan., Safrit said.
Justin Dixon, a linebacker from Smithfield-Selma, and Jheranie Boyd, a receiver from Gastonia Ashbrook, have to "improve their academic standing," Safrit said, or they will have to enroll in a prep school.
Donovan Tate, a quarterback from Cartersville, Ga., is considered one of the best high school prospects in baseball and is likely to be a first-round pick in the MLB Draft in June.
That's how 29-for-12 turns into 24-for-24.

Mon, 11/02/2009 - 07:15 — hollisbxk271Shouldn't this scout analyst be busy scouting instead of paying so much attention to one program. Oh I forgot, Miller must be on butch's payroll to give his recruits more staaaaars. Maybe if you had more honest reporting and less biased reporting your company wouldn't be getting flushed down the toilet.

Wed, 09/09/2009 - 09:48 — jonny8775Giving good scholarships is very good. Because these days lot of people try to having fake diplomas with out having any knowledge of particular fields. Giving good scholarships and diplomas is big deal in these days because there are lot of ways to having these kind of things.

Sat, 05/02/2009 - 10:53 — awdracerWolfpack03, without the personal attacks you could simply mention that UNC has a LOT of advocates within the existing recruiting services that push stars for UNC recruits. Often these efforts result in extra stars for some of their recruits. This was going on back when "Prep-Atlantic" was covering recruiting long before Scout and Rivals got going.
Miller is pretty sure that
Sat, 05/02/2009 - 10:50 — awdracerMiller is pretty sure that the four recruits that he mentioned won't get in. He didn't mention that there are at least four others who are HIGHLY unlikely to qualify. Those recruiting rankings may not look so shiny in August.
Of course with Butch and UNC using on-line correspondence courses to get recruits qualified, anything is possible.
on-line correspondence courses
Sat, 05/02/2009 - 15:15 — gvillegatrhhhmmm. reminds me of the basketball coach at ncsu who took those same courses at a no name school in WVa. that is prolly equvalent to an elementary school graduation around these parts!

Fri, 05/01/2009 - 21:54 — wolfpack03JP this was a terrible attempt to justify for Butch Davis' recruiting tactics. Your scholarship equation never passed 26-22. Your explanation for the remaining 4 recruits is Miller Safrit says it will likely be resolved by August. Who is Miller Safrit and how the hell is he suppose to know so much about UNC's football program. Shouldn't this scout analyst be busy scouting instead of paying so much attention to one program. Oh I forgot, Miller must be on butch's payroll to give his recruits more staaaaars. That is a false assertion....
Sat, 05/02/2009 - 11:18 — UNC1998None of us know the reason behind any of the medical hardships or dismissals save one. the fact that this issue is being so public speaks to a lack of other topics about the coach or program which to discuss at this time. I, for one, am excited about actual football games being played.

Fri, 05/01/2009 - 15:38 — awdracerDid you just call the UNC players that butch kicked off the team to make room for new recruits "dead weight"?

Fri, 05/01/2009 - 12:52 — googleA dark cloud is hovering over Chapel Hill's football team:
1. Large numbers of dismissed or "not coming" players.
2. Yates' injury. Backup quarterback transfers to Catawba.
3. Assistant coaches revolving door.
4. Economic crunch has stopped stadium upgrades (except for the new toilets).
Good for him

The Waiver Wire is alive and well at UNC.

Just get them in.
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 11:32 — ezuncRemember if Davis can just get them in UNC, over 80% of all grades GIVEN are A's & B's. No concern for any players funking out once they get in. Davis has the opportunity to bring any thug because the education is so easy. Also, Cow U's old coach couldn't keep assistant coaches and you see where he is now.
EZUNC, you just don't know
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 11:46 — awdracerEZUNC, you just don't know how funny that is coming from an ECU fan. If you're going to try an argue a point with an ACC fan, stay away from academics. What is ECU good in? Stick to that. Yes, partying, drinking, and ultimate frisbee. That's your home base. Keep your foot on it.
interesting
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 10:01 — awdracerAnother cause for concern is the "type" of players that Butch is recruiting. When some of the kids like Hadley manage to stay out of jail long enough to actually MAKE it to UNC and start committing crimes there it'll be interesting to see how the bluebloods that pay the bills react.
Interesting...
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 09:44 — googleDidn't three of Butch Davis' assistant coaches leave for better opportunities this spring? The lack of coaching staff continuity alone is reason for concern at UNC-CH.
goheels: "Be worried"????
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 09:29 — awdracergoheels: "Be worried"???? About what? Butch is 0-2 against O'Brien. That's just how it is and that's just how it's going to be. Hang on tight to your recruiting rankings. That's all you'll have after visiting Raleigh at the end of the season. Maybe I should tell you to hold on to your "adjusted" recruiting rankings after about 8 of them don't make it to campus. (four are confirmed, I imagine that the rest are trying to squeeze in by taking the "online correspondence courses" that Butch seems to favor. Welcome to the "NEW U".
Online Correspondence Course
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 12:52 — rtarnowskiDid he ask the Kool Aide man about for his opinion on online classes? Where did Sidney graduate from anyway? HomeDepot.com U?
Ummm, Blues, In the middle
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 09:19 — awdracerUmmm, Blues, In the middle of last season after having unprecedented injuries, we NC State was down to 46 scholarship players (excluding redshirts). Are you saying that NC State had to unethically remove players from our team to make room like Butch has been doing? Does that make sense to you? We haven't been anywhere near the 85 limit since TOB got to Raleigh. We haven't even consider waiving players like Butch has. The numbers are clear. Despite having bad luck and having many more injuries than UNC, NC State has had to put ONE player on "medical hardship". UNC has done it FIFTEEN times since the 2002 class. That's just a fact. Also, I understand that Sexton and Rich along with some others did not leave willingly. I also understand that you guys are going to have trouble getting about 8 of your precious recruiting class in because of grades. It looks like Butch is trying to turn UNC into the "NEW U". Good luck with that.
ironic
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 13:01 — gvillegatryou have the skinny on what UNC does inside their program (kids leaving unwillingly) but nothing about your own team?
Buthc turned Miami around and out of trouble. such a tired act.
Funny how the Staters whine
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 09:01 — GoHeels1984Funny how the Staters whine about UNC's processes. They have to be the most whiny fans I know of... including the Merryland fans. Perhaps they are the ones who should be coined the wine and cheese crowd.... that is "Whine and Cheesy" crowd because that is what they are. What does it matter? I know, you will mention 88 to 3 or whatever that score was that Kow Kollege beat UNC this past fall in football. Be worried! The Heels will continue to get all of the national coverage and will continue to be the better team over the peckers for years to come under Butch! Go Heels!
Whiny State Fans
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 08:32 — jblues1969Please also make sure if you go into medical hardships, that you cite the kid from BC who was put on hardship after being granted a medical redshirt during O'Brien's tenure that claimed he was never injured at all and was told to fake his injury.
Also list all the transfers and dismissals from NC State in the last 3 seasons. These are the ones that State fans don't seem to remember ever happening when they whine about Davis.
You can also mention that athletic scholarships are renewed each year at the discretion of the head coach and any coach is perfectly within their rights to not renew if a player isn't doing the right things.
Also, JP, you missed out on the fact that Reddick and Adams, by enrolling in January, can count against LAST year's scholarship numbers. This fact has been missed on every article about UNC's signing class in every publication since February.

Nice soft article
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 08:07 — vandrewsI guess no one is going to go after Butchie for chasing these players off the team. JP, if you want to do some investigative journalism, I'm sure the public would like to see several points so they can make their own opinions into what is going on here:
1. There have been quite a few 'medical hardships' since BD arrived. Some think he's kicking kids off the team to make room for others. Is UNC's number of medical hardships under BD higher than other programs both locally and nationally?
2. Of the dismissed players, how highly were they ranked?
Just doing the math
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 08:16 — jpg (author)We'll revisit medical hardships and the rest as we learn more. Just providing the numbers, which in of itself is newsworthy, or at least interesting since it was such a big topic at the end of football season.
— JPG
Newsworthy?
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 12:55 — gvillegatrIt was ONLY newsworthy to jealous ncsu fans who cant seem to understand how their team cant do away with dead weight!
Joe, I appreciate you
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 08:27 — awdracerJoe, I appreciate you following up on this. It was indeed a big story and worthy of coverage. Butch was right. He was able to get it done. It's too bad that we don't know the real story behind a lot of the departures. I'm hearing that a lot of the players that left under the guise of "graduated" didn't leave happy.
BTW, if you want to look into whether or not UNC has been using "medical hardships" as a way to open up scholarships while avoiding bad publicity then I have some numbers for you.
Since the 2002 recruiting class, UNC has put FIFTEEN players on medical hardship. NCSU has done it ONE time. The numbers of medical hardships that UNC is claiming is amazing compared to most programs.
FYI.
