Tracy Smith will play basketball for N.C. State next season, his mother said Thursday.
The Wolfpack junior is among the 103 underclassmen on the NBA's list of early entrants but he's not going anywhere, LaShawn Lester said.
"There's nothing to worry about," Lester said Thursday. "He's going to be at N.C. State next year."
Smith's mother said the junior power forward who led State in scoring (16.5 points per game) and rebounding (7.3 per game) wanted to keep his NBA options open and he did not hire an agent. Lester said her son is on track to graduate next May and is in good academic standing. She has plans to move from Detroit to Raleigh in July to spend Smith's senior season with him.
"He just wanted to test the waters," Lester said. "Everything is good [at N.C. State]."

The Future
Fri, 04/30/2010 - 18:00 — colvenjdWith Smith returning and Leslie, Harrow and other good recruits along with a solid veteran core, NC State basketball will make some noise next season if Sid can gel all the talent to act as one.
We'll see.
Fri, 04/30/2010 - 20:56 — JPDOhioLast year's team appeared to be more together and supportive of each other than any team since Sid has been there. He has consistently stated that the players decide who is going to play-by their performance in practice and in the games. So anyone who is not getting minutes can look in a mirror for the reason.
It also has been reported that current Pack players talked to Leslie and told him they wanted him to come. Will this attitude hold up when the competition starts starts and the playing time is divied up? I hope so and believe that it will. Sid has recruited team oriented players. The head cases he inherited are one year removed.
I like the prospects of this group-short and long term. 8 of the 12 players on the projected roster for next year are freshmen or sophomores. The future is bright and a successful year next year will breed more success.
