Former North Carolina coach Dean Smith didn’t make the trip to Detroit, but he liked what he saw the Tar Heels do from afar Monday night.
“That was sensational, a good start and a good ending,’’ said an excited Smith, who watched the national championship game on television from his home in Chapel Hill.
“It was the national championship. Tyler [Hansbrough], he was jumping up and down. That’s why they [several key players] came back.”
In a post-game interview on CBS, Tar Heel coach Roy Williams sent a message to Smith, who also won two national titles before retiring.
“I hope you are watching, hope you are enjoying this moment,’’ Williams said to his legendry mentor and former boss.
Smith might not have joined the celebrating crowd on Frankilin Street, but he enjoyed seeing the Tar Heels claim its fifth NCAA title.

2 GREAT COACHES
Tue, 04/07/2009 - 14:54 — pammy1I don't know what I appreciate Coach Smith more for.......35 great years as a teacher, mentor, and a class coach with integrity or the fact that it was he who brought Roy Williams back "home" where he is so obviously the perfect fit to continue the tradition where Coach Smith left off......we are eternally indebted to you both...........real class acts!
Understatement
Tue, 04/07/2009 - 14:42 — tar4heel2"Sensational"? Coach Smith is as reserved as ever. What an understatement. The NCAA tourney records set by UNC are too many to count. The dominance of this team in the tourney is unprecedented; they could have beaten the Bobcats last night. We all know coach Smith is predictably happy, but "sensational" only begins to describe it.
"Unprecedented"?
Tue, 04/07/2009 - 15:41 — JPDOhioAs good as UNC was in the tourney (and they were very good), to say that their performance was "unprecedented" is a little over the top. Take for example, UCLA in 64-65, 66-67, and 72-73. They played less games in the tourney for sure, but they were at least as dominant as UNC was this year.
I am not trying to demean UNC's performance. I am just trying to temper the exuberance before someone decides to sacrifice a virgin in homage to the exalted champions.
many similarities
Tue, 04/07/2009 - 09:34 — hat_in_handThere will always be a bond between these two greats. They are very alike in handling recruits and players. Their coaching philosophy is a little different, but they expect the a hard-nose toughness(Smith through his pressing d and Roy through a relentless attack on the basket) and an attitude of we will make the win happen.
10 players leaving this year. UNC may need both Smith and Williams next year.

Coach Smith is Special
Tue, 04/07/2009 - 01:17 — topping241John Kilgo said for years that UNC fans should savor ALL the many wonderful things that Coach Smith has done for UNC basketball over the years! He set the standards and Coach Williams has picked-up the challenge left by Coach Smith. Recruit good players, graduate the players and have fun along the way! Coaches Smith and Williams are special! Thanks to both of you from the Carolina nation! Go Heels!
