Sports Illustrated announced this morning that Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt have been named the magazine's Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
The NCAA's all-time winningest coaches in men and women's basketball, Krzyzewski and Summitt join UCLA's John Wooden (1972) and North Carolina's Dean Smith (1997) as college coaches who have received the magazine's award.
“The voices of those who have been inspired by Pat Summitt and Mike Krzyzewski echo from everywhere and will continue for decades," Time Inc. Sports Group editor Terry McDonell said in a statement released by the magazine. "What they have achieved through their coaching and, more importantly, their teaching places them among history’s transcendent figures. It is an honor to now include them in the select group of Sportsmen and Sportswomen.”

Assistant sports editor Lorenzo Perez has bounced back-and-forth between The News & Observer's news and sports department several times since joining the newspaper in 1999. His latest assignment has him working with The N&O's ACC writers and online news. E-mail
