MIAMI — Cameron Sexton hadn't taken a snap for North Carolina in over a year.

No problem. The redshirt junior led the Tar Heels on a game-winning drive, hooking up with Brooks Foster for a 14-yard touchdown to give the Tar Heels a 27-24 win. Couple with Trimane Goddard's game-saving interception, and the Tar Heels suddenly have two wins on the road.

The Hurricanes blitzed constantly on the final drive, but Sexton calmly handled the pressure. He rolled out of the pocket, evaded the Hurricanes and found Foster in the end zone.

The touchdown gave Carolina its first lead of the game.

With starting quarterback T.J. Yates sidelined for six weeks with a fractured left ankle, North Carolina turned to Sexton, Mike Paulus and even Brandon Tate. Paulus got the start, but by the second half, Sexton was the one making the offense move.

In the fourth, Sexton threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks, cutting Miami's lead 24-21.

With 6:21 left, safety Trimane Goddard grabbed an interception, giving the Tar Heels the ball just 43 yards from their own end zone. But on a third-and-9, Sexton was sacked, and Jay Wooten’s 53-yard field goal try went wide left.

Redshirt freshman Mike Paulus started the game, but on UNC’s third offensive possession, Sexton came in behind center. The 58-yard scoring drive included several completed passes by Sexton, another by wide receiver Brandon Tate, and a 6-yard touchdown score by running back Greg Little that cut UNC’s deficit to 14-7.

The momentum seemed to carry over to UNC’s defense until, on a fourth-and-5, a Tar Heel ran into Miami’s punter, giving the Hurricanes an automatic first down. UNC still held UM to a 35-yard field goal on the drive, but it was symptomatic of the bobbles the team had during the entire first half.

For example: on UNC’s second offense possession, a holding penalty turned a roughly-40-yard run by Shaun Draughn into a 7-yard gain, two consecutive false start penalties backed it up 10 more yards, and Paulus had to recover his own fumble.

Then, on a 4th-and-16, punter Terrence Brown couldn’t handle a snap that was slightly to his left, falling on the ball at the 11.

Three plays later, a Cooper catch gave Miami a 14-0 lead.

But with Sexton behind center, Carolina came out strong to start the second half. He completed a 38-yard pass to Tate to help set up Ryan Houston’s second career touchdown run; that cut UNC’s deficit to 17-14.

With 9:59 left in the fourth, Miami quarterback Robert Marve found Aldarius Johnson in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass. That gave Miami a 24-14 cushion.

But 59 yards later, on a third-and-10 from the 26, Sexton found Nicks for the longest passing play on Sexton’s career.

BRIEFLY: Tate has also broken the NCAA record for combined kickoff return (punts and kickoff) yardage, previously held by California’s Deltha O’Neal (3,455).

Sexton: Looks to best QBack

Sexton: Looks to be best QBack of the three to me. Also offensive line really needs to go up a notch and protect runners and qbacks. Also Sexton was recruited hard by more big time football programs like Va Tech; Usc; Fl. State ; NC State: ECU: Clemson etc. than Paulus and TJ put together. thanks

Beamerballl and Anon

was UNC's defense better than Nebraskas? that was my question. you guys love to steer whatever I say into a direction I never took it. Nebraska was prolly the worse defense you guys have seen all year. proof is in the scoring and yardage. good victory as I had you guys straight up.

and, yes, I had been drinking and no, I dont think UNC will go undefeated for the rest of the year.

Gville you are still confused!

No, I dont think UNC has a better defense than Nebraska.  The  reason for the added yardage is because this is the first game that Tech has focused on passing the football.  One game this year there was not one pass.  The scoring was due to our defense putting us in good situations and short fields.  Proof is in the tape.......

from pick six: week 5

VT -- yall will see UNC's defense is better than the Black Shirts.

I dont know where VT will lose in conference but it needs to happen twice cause the Heels may not lose a nother game.

still upset about loss last week gville????????????????

Haha, are you still sulking about UNC snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?  and by the way, your subject and question are silly.  First off, Nebraska is way better than UNC in all phases and the UNC defense is decent but nothing special.  Come on man, do you want UNC ranked just so the world can see them fall ( like the overrated pirates). Come down to Earth, your big baby blue head is getting too big!

Are you drunk gatr?

The only thing to be seen is that "the black shirts"  and "the baby blue shirts"  both went down!  UNC has a good defense but come on man, let them play more games before you bow down to them!  A good defense isnt penalized for 100 yards!  Hey, your right UNC might not lose another game but they might not win another one either! Cheering for whoever beats the holes!

TOUCHDOWN CAROLINA!!! GO heels!

The U maybe back!! But Butch and the HEELS are on the verge of having something special! CAM SEXTON!! WHO would have thought! And for all u doubters in the media and the wolfpack and pirate fans etc. who love to talk smack!! WOOOOOO!! It aint even bball season yet! Butch and those gridiron heels are comin! GO HEELS!!!!!!!!

Good Game Heels

A deserved win......

Hot Dog!!!!!

The Heels are growing up in crunch..money....big time. Win or lose..they've made mistakes, errors, had bad kicks, not tackled. They haven't quit. They've kept pushing. Win or lose (looking like win) I'm proud of this team.

Had to take kid for some new jeans

But listened on radio. Sounds like Sexton may be more stable. UNC needs to learn not to hurt themselves. Also, punt and kick teams need to buckle down. Kick those kickoffs in bounds, please. Otherwise, I was guessing it would be close, turns out it'll come down to the wire. Go Heels!

beeeep. beeeep. beeeep.

beeeep. beeeep. beeeep. beeeep.

win or lose. Cameron Sexton appears to be the answer and the QB situation is not in shambles which I feared, admitedly.

well, they scored! we'll

well, they scored! we'll see ...

romper stomper as I

romper stomper as I suggested earlier in the week. back to square 1 for UNC football. its early, and I guess they can turn it around, but they'll need to start on this next possession. 0-14.
