Second look at the ACC in 2009-10

• The State's SEC preview

Now that we know who's coming back, and Virginia's coach, let's take a second look (here's the first) at ACC hoops in 2009-10.

Robbi Pickeral and I will do this for the record in July, with the Summer Hoops Preview, but just for the sake of newness of the draft impact, the quick-and-dirty predicted order of finish:

1. Duke: Kyle Singler, finally in his natural position, will be the best player in the league. (Previous: 1)

2. UNC: New talent that hasn't played together yet. That's the only reason the Heels are behind Duke. (2)

3. Boston College: Guard Tyrese Rice was such a big part of that team, but the way Al Skinner's offense works, the remaining parts — with four starters back from an NCAA team — will function without Rice. (4)

4. Georgia Tech: Talent on top of talent. Memo to Paul Hewitt: Coach the team, not the refs. (5)

5. Florida State: Another huge loss (guard Toney Douglas) but bigs Solomon Alabi and Chris Singleton and combo guard Derwin Kitchen give the Noles a great core. (6)

6. Maryland: Gary's tweeting about his new big men. They have to be an improvement from the burlap sack and Swiffer WetJet that manned the post last year — and still made the tourney. (7)

7. Clemson: Who's going to shoot without K.C. Rivers and Terrence Oglesby? (3)

8. Virginia Tech: A three-man team has been reduced to a two-man team without A.D. Vassallo. (8)

9. Virginia: New Coach Syndrome gives the Hoos hope. (10)

10. N.C. State: The Sidney Lowe Era hits Phase 2 with his own players. (9)

11. Wake Forest: Maybe they'll have more structure on offense with Ish Smith at the point. Maybe Al-Farouq Aminu will develop into an All-ACC player. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. With Wake you never know. (11)

12. Miami: Not budging on this. Unlike FSU and BC, the Canes do not have the means to replace their superstar guard. And stop with the Villanova transfer (Malcolm Grant), he's not Jack McClinton. (12)

JPG I usually enjoy your articles but you are way off base in so many ways on this one Duke: Duke struggled last year when Henderson was not on the floor or when he was having an off night.This year they do not have a single athlete on the squad. Not one player can put the ball on the floor and create. Singler will not be enough to save this team. Wake Forest: Wake will not finish 11th they still have loads of talent and their freshmen are coming back with more experience. GT: Will be better than last year, but will not be a 4th place team, gaurds are still not good, Hewitt still not a good coach. NCSU: I am partial to this one being a State fan, but this will be a better than 10th place team. Fresh start with newly dedicated players. This squad has the talent to beat any team in the middle tier. 6th -8th place finish.

This is just another schmoozer K-wannabe article. A couple of things are certain, Duke will not be the last team standing when the really important nets are trimmed. When is the last time that the Blue Dabbles advanced to The Final Four, much less won a national championship?

Let K collect all of the the ACC Tournament trophies around, because Roy has his teams focused on a bigger and more important prize. It is interesting that Dean Smith, Special K and Roy-boy all have winning records at Cameron!

Dook number 1?

While everyone is pointing out multiple (and clear) flaws in your predictions, I'm just going to point out the most obvious one. Dook at number 1? Really? We beat Dook twice this year while playing average basketball in each game. They lost Henderson, are moving Singler to the perimeter and now have absolutely no threat in the post. With Ginyard back, we have what we need to keep Dook from beating us with the 3 ball.

I guess I understand if you assume Dook will have a better conference record. I believe in Drew II, but I could see a couple losses coming from a young team with some hiccups at the point. JP honestly I am with you unfortunately on a drop off of Wake...I think the loss of JJ hurts the most way more than Teague! I don't think it will be as bad as #12 in ACC, but I don't feel great about the prospects on offense! Hopefully there will be some surprises. Chas needs to step up and Aminu I know will! Looking forward to seeing CJ Harris play and hopes he will be a spark after Teague's departure! LD needs to know his place and play smarter...his gunning/missing 3's hurt us at times...Dunk the ball (alley-oops) not shooting 3's! Maybe Gary Clark can hit some 3's consistently...I sound like you maybe, maybe, maybe! I see what you mean....but I don't think Wake will be as low as a #12...hopefully in the top half of ACC! Go Deacs!
