Overnight, NC State went from 0-8 vs. the top 50 in RPI to 3-8 thanks to wins by Texas and Miami. That's a big jump.

Luke, sorry I could join you guys in Atlanta this year. What do you think of my decision to not create a distraction at this year's tournament and what are the odds I work an ACC game of any kind next season?

Karl, thanks for stopping by. I know you're busy with your new job at the Big East tournament, but your presence has been felt here. As for next year, who has any idea at this point????

It is, but these numbers are fluid at this time of year. Not sure what effect a Miami loss today would have.

Hey Luke How bad is the ACC this year?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:03 Bobby LOOOZ
11:04
Luke DeCock:

I'm not sure it's historically bad, but it's certainly top- and bottom-heavy. The top three teams are pretty good. Virginia's not bad. NC State and Miami can play with anyone, but don't always. And the other six are varying degrees of brutal.

[Comment From GregGreg: ]

I don't think a Miami loss to FSU would hurt too badly. A number of the bubble teams hurt their chances yesterday (Northwestern, etc), so I think if NCSU can knock off UVA, they should be in.

Friday March 9, 2012 11:04 Greg
11:06
Luke DeCock:

It was without question a great day for NC State elsewhere. But if Miami loses and falls out of the top 50, State falls back to 1-9 or 2-8 depending on what happens against Virginia. If State and Miami win, NC State would be 4-8 vs. the top 50. That's a solid bubble number.

[Comment From GregGreg: ]

Who do you peg for upsets today? I like NC State over Virginia and Miami over FSU. Those two teams have the most to play for and have winnable games.

Friday March 9, 2012 11:06 Greg
11:09
Luke DeCock:

Sorry -- wireless crash here in Atlanta. The ACC tournament, even in Greensboro, is famous for unreliable wireless.

Friday March 9, 2012 11:09 Luke DeCock
11:10
Luke DeCock:

Anyway, NC State should have beaten Virginia at home, so that's a logical pick. Miami certainly capable of beating FSU. I think there's a potential shocker out there if Terrell Stoglin gets hot and UNC isn't ready to play, which has happened to the Tar Heels on occasion this year. Unlikely, but possible.

Luke - You wrote Bzdelick needs time. How much time? When should Wake consider shifting directions? And how important is charisma in a college hoops coach?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:10 Sam
11:11
Luke DeCock:

I think you need to give Bzdelik one year with a class of recruits he recruited as underclassmen. It's unfair to judge ANY college coach until his third year and he gets those kids in. If there's no signs of hope next fall, and I'm talking about visible signs of progress, I'd have no problem with Wake changing directions.

Friday March 9, 2012 11:11 Luke DeCock
11:12
Luke DeCock:

There's still tremendous pressure on Ron Wellman to fire Bzdelik now. The donors aren't happy. And Bzdelik's lack of charm, charisma, whatever isn't helping. He's an Xs and Os guy, not a salesman or politician. He makes Herb Sendek look like Jay Leno. But it's always the same: If you win, none of that matters. Jim Calhoun has the charisma of a pit bull.

Are we seeing justification that Atlanta's just a terrible sports city this weekend with the tournament attendance, and it's not just the Thrashers that couldn't draw fleas to a flame?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:12 Ken
11:13
Luke DeCock:

The 2001 tournament at the Georgia Dome shattered attendance records. 2009 was pretty dismal and thank God they moved it to Philips Arena this year. So what's the difference since 2001? The economy. Expansion. GT being a nonfactor. Even Greensboro hasn't been as well attended lately. But yes, Atlanta at this point offers no justification for bringing the tournament back here again. Ever.

A true point guard would help, to free up Michael Snaer and Ian Miller as scorers. Bernard James won't be easy to replace inside. And a lot more depth than the Seminoles have right now.

Like you mentioned above about UNC and MD, I think Duke needs to jump out on VT early. They can't let them hang around this time.

Friday March 9, 2012 11:16 Greg
11:17
Luke DeCock:

A good point, and VT appears to be playing with some confidence right now, based on the way the Hokies played against Clemson. Duke without Ryan Kelly is an easier team to defend, especially for a team like VT that's not especially big. But I would expect Duke to handle the Hokies rather easily today. It'd be a bigger problem against FSU/Miami.

How did Coach K get any votes for COY? He has as many McD's All-Americans as Roy has, and he has done much less than he should have with them. Is his talent reading ability getting worse, or are the big time recruits no longer interested in Durham?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:17 Wake backer

Luke DeCock:

I voted for Krzyzewski, because he took a team that just wasn't working, despite the talent assembled, and rebuilt it on the fly into a title contender. It's a subtle thing, but it's a coaching job that deserves appreciation. Thought Hamilton and Gottfried deserved consideration as well. As for the top recruits, they've pulled in Kyrie Irving and Austin Rivers in back-to-back years. I think they're doing OK.

[Comment From D. MerrittD. Merritt: ]

How many games will Duke win from here on in? I say Duke loses today, and is out in the 2nd round next week. They can't stop anyone from dribble penetration, the 3's hae not been falling, and they quit playing defense sometime mid last season.

Friday March 9, 2012 11:19 D. Merritt
11:20
Luke DeCock:

Duke's defense has actually improved substantially over the course of the season, one reason why Krzyzewski received COY votes. But yes, the guards are weak defensively, they're EXTREMELY reliant on 3-point shooting and there's an overall defensive intensity that's just not quite there. I think Duke is capable of winning the ACC title, but may or may not; my guess right now on the NCAA tournament is a loss in the first game of the regional. Kind of like 2009.

[Comment From KevinKevin: ]

I know they've moved the location around going back to when they played a few tournaments at the Cap Centre in the '70s, but the last three that haven't been in NC have been poorly attended. Is it time for the ACC to make Greensboro the conference's version of Madison Square Garden and build up the base again before they take the show on the road? How would the non-NC schools react to that, if it were to happen?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:21 Kevin
11:22
Luke DeCock:

Tampa, too. There's political pressure to move it around, no question about it. But the next three are in Greensboro and there's no question it works better there than anywhere else. I think they'll still have to move it around, but less often than the past few years. More likely, they'll stick with Greensboro and maybe an occasional trip to Charlotte in the future.

Saw you comment and article that Wake needs a year. I would've never thought Wake could've possibly gotten this bad, all signs point to a horrific choice being made at coach there, they could have done so much better.......I think the AD and Coach are history in a 1-2 yrs. I hate it for Wake though, senseless mistakes made there.

Luke DeCock:

Agree that Bzdelik has done very little to generate any confidence in his performance so far. But as I noted earlier, you can't judge a coach entirely on someone else's recruits, particularly when he's spent two years cleaning out the program of bad apples.

[Comment From Slippery WeaselSlippery Weasel: ]

the attendance looks very poor. I was flipping between the ACC and SEC and the SEC had several KY wildcat fans there, they really travel, no matter where the team is. Why doesn't UNC pack the stadium regardless? Are they too accustomed to having it in their backyard every year? Or do the fans lack the passion of teams like KY and Kansas that travel anywhere anytime?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:23 Slippery Weasel
11:24
Luke DeCock:

UNC and NC State fans typically do a good job of filling the arena. UNC didn't play yesterday, and it's easier to get to Atlanta from NC than it is to get to New Orleans from Kentucky. (And if you were going to go a day early, would you rather go to New Orleans or Atlanta?) I would expect a heavy UNC contingent today.

Don't you think that Leonard Hamilton looks a lot like Bunny Colvin from The Wire? Also -- it can't be coincidence that Colvin called his legalization-of-drugs project "Hamsterdam," can it? Colvin was probably just giving some love to his alter ego, no?

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why the student section at Florida State doesn't call itself Hamsterdam. That just seems so obvious to me.

Thoughts on Turgeon at Maryland? What do think of his first year and where is that program headed? I think he is a great hire, one of the best hires in recent yrs by any team. I doubt they win today, but the future looks good in turtle-ville!

11:28
Luke DeCock:

Impressed with Turgeon so far -- his unflinching honesty, if nothing else. Clearly has a plan, and the players are (for the most part) buying into it. If he can recruit DC/MD/VA, he's clearly got the Xs and Os down. Like the hire.

[Comment From State FanState Fan: ]

Isn't State helped by the fact that the bubble is so awful this year? The Pac-12 would probably place zero teams if not for the automatic bid, yet State is still on the outside looking in? What would need to happen for State to make it if they lose to Virginia today?

Friday March 9, 2012 11:28 State Fan
11:29
Luke DeCock:

Very much so. It's a brutal bubble. Teams like BYU and Iona have been done for days, but their prospects are improving as the competition implodes. I don't think State can make it in without beating Virginia. They need one big win.

Luke, as a Wake Forest alum, I am so frustrated about the current state of the program. Do you see Bzdelic getting another year? I for the life of me cant figure out what Wellman saw in him. The whole thing is embarrassing!

11:30
Luke DeCock:

As noted earlier, I think you have to give Bzdelik another year, having gone down this road. But I totally understand your frustration. There's been very little that's happened on the court to justify the hire or his continuing employment.
