Raleigh ranked No. 18 in 'sports obsession'

Bookmark and Share

All those packed houses at Carter-Finley Stadium and the RBC Center apparently haven’t gone unnoticed.

Men’s Health Magazine ranked Raleigh as the No. 18 sports-obsessed city in the United States. The ranking of 100 major U.S. cities appears in the July/August issue of the magazine.

The magazine counted how many people in a given city attend college and professional baseball, basketball and football games in a given city. NASCAR attendance, the number of people vying for sports tickets and team apparel and the number of fans calling themselves foam-finger-waving fanatics also was taken into account, according to a news release from Men’s Health.

Arlington, Texas, was rated No. 1, followed by Aurora, Colo.; Colorado Springs; Indianapolis, and Columbus, Ohio. Miami was ranked last in the survey.

In the Carolinas, Charlotte (No. 9) was the only city rated ahead of Raleigh. Durham (33), Greensboro (35) and Columbia (83) also were included in the rankings.

Raleigh’s passion for college sports and the Carolina Hurricanes couldn’t have hurt. But civic leaders in the state capital shouldn’t boast too much about the ranking.

Such thriving sports fantasy destinations as Anchorage, Alaska (10), Manchester, N.H. (11), and Sioux Falls, S.D. (17), were ranked ahead of Raleigh.

Douchebaggery at the sheer daring of Hardy's career, like his oversight that it's impossible not to show it.

What about the game in the

What about the game in the rain last year against UCF? How many fans were there? 1000?

Actually...

there were 57583 there.  People just went under the bleachers when the monsoon showed up.  As for baskettball...

-NC State fans have ranked #7, #17, #20, #19, #16, #13, #17, #18, #16 in basketball attendance since the 2000 season. In 2008, NC State fans averaged 15,043 which was the 2nd highest total in the history of the program despite the team not making the post-season.

In short, think before you speak.

joke

Kenan is half empty at any game. Why do you think they painted the bleachers powder blue? Now go back to making burgers before the lunch crowd comes in.

The whole poll is bogus anyway. If Anchorage is in the top ten, it's a stupid poll at best.

Precisley

"The whole poll is bogus anyway."

That is EXACTLY what I wanted to say but didnt want to hear all the whine coming from Raleigh.

Packed house at RBC Center?

You must not have made it to many NC State basketball games this past year.

just maybe...

they were talking about hockey?

we certainly know that there was no packed house at Kenan last year with 10 minutes left to go, 41-10.

what does ...

one game (in Kenan) have to do with an entire home slate (ncsu b-ball)???
