Bookmark and Share

According to the Florida Times-Union's live signing day blog, Raines High in Jacksonville, Fla., has news for North Carolina and N.C. State fans.

Sam Smiley, a 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback at Raines, has committed to North Carolina. He's rated a two-star prospect by scout.com. North Carolina's official web site reported at 11:01 a.m. that Smiley's letter of intent had arrived.

Chris Jones, a defensive tackle who committed to N.C. State last week, will not sign with the Wolfpack, according to the Times-Union. He will sign with Illinois.

Jones is a three-star prospect.

Winning In February

Winning In February, it's "The Carolina Way"!

See you in the  Fall!!!

Agree

Nicely put. It is why we have owned you guys for so many years and so many more to come. Enjoy.

recruiting

Butch has done a very good job and is beating Coach "Who Licked The Red Off My Candy" face pretty badly. Go Butch!

Don't Forget

Please don't forget what you just said.  Next season when the #3 national-ranked long-snapper send a perfect spiral snap to the 2 time all-state & #3 nationally-ranked punter and he consistently delivers punts inside the Heel 20 or when the #3 nationally-ranked kicker sends the kick-offs constantly over the heads of Tarheel return men, please don't forget your comments.  If you do, I'll remind you with a "I told you so!"  TOB recruits for team needs not for South Beach parties.

butch vs tob

I usually stay away from the whole recruiting routine, because I don't follow it and it's a crap shoot anyway. RW is the poster child for the argument that star ratings are meaningless. Sure, the odds are that a 5-star is more likely to succeed than a 3-star, but so what. TOB has made a living coaching up 3-stars and Butch has made a living out of recruiting 4- and 5-stars. When it comes to recruiting the bluechips, Butch's success is impressive and undeniable.

Fortunately for us Pack fans, Butch remains as one of the worst game-day coaches in major college football. He has no equal when it comes to clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. There is a story in the Canton, Ohio newspaper that quotes Bruce Ariens, who is the Steelers' current offensive coordinator, blaming Butch Davis for losing the Browns only playoff game since they returned to the NFL in 1999. Ariens was an assistant on Davis' staff when the Browns built up a 17 point lead at Pittsburgh. Cleveland's DC had a great game plan that had the Steelers on their heels. According to Ariens, Butch called off the dogs and the Steelers came back and scored the game winner in the last minute.

This should sound familiar to UNC fans, who have watched Butch carry on this tradition in Chapel Hill. As long as Butch is there, he will outrecruit TOB on paper and get outcoached in the fall. Bank on it.

Agree to a point

But only if Butch has been losing in Chapel Hill, which he hasn't. The fact that Barth stuck his foot in the ground in 09 on that field goal attempt and that Searcy tipped the out of play ball back in play (okay add in the punt return for a TD) this year, were not coaching decisions, per se., but could be tied to coaching is certainly frustrating. But what Coach Davis is building, is somthing that is getting better (8 win seasons and 3 consecutive Bowls) than it was. So perhaps his game day coaching will improve as well.

Getting better

Calling off the dogs has happened in the past with Butch, but it has happened with every team at every level at some point. Also, I do not recall it happening once this past season. I believe Butch got that message.

Maybe

Except on the field where it really counts.

Jones signed with Illinois, huh? That's funny considering there was a big article about Illinois being one of the schools that is prone to over-sign recruits.

On the field

True if you are only looking at one game a year. Otherwise Coach Davis is way out ahead of TOB 3-1.

Pfft

You can only judge those teams in head-to-head matchups. The transitive property doesn't work in sports.

Whatever

I am just talking about the number of winning seasons.

Wrong

We were better this year and their first year.  Its 2-2.

Better team?

I will agree with 2-2, but will give you 07 and 08 (what was that score?), but we will take 09 and this year. The fact remains though, BD has had 3 winning seasons out of 4 and TOB has had 1 out of 4.

Nope.

There is no way to argue you had a better team this year.  We had a better record, better bowl win and won the head to head.  Both teams sucked in 07 but we sucked less.  We beat you in 08 and 09 too but you definitely had a better season.  Was 08 the savage beating?  I am tempted to call it 3-1 in our favor just because of that.

Apparently, there were some

Apparently, there were some character questions that led to State pulling his offer. I'll trust the coaches' decision on this...
