Pack Power
Tue, 05/11/2010 - 16:47 — charles2I respectfully disagree that Howell will start for the Pack this season. My projected line-up will consist of Smith, Leslie, Wood, Brown and Gonzales. I fully expect the Pack to be a run and gun team this year because of its athleticism and depth. Also, if you put Smith and Howell at center and PF respectively, you run the risk of them getting into serious foul trouble. If Howell is a sub, then he would come in and replace Smith and or Leslie. Also, by starting Wood, it gives the Pack a great inside-outside game and because Brown can also knocked down the 3s along with Wood, they can’t double team Smith anymore. In addition, Leslie has a nice 15-18 foot jumper.
Howell has shown flashes of being an excellent rebounder and he already is an adept passer. In my humble opinion, I think he is best coming off the bench. He adds size, strength and a really good shooting touch for a big man. He is more polished that either Painter or Vandenberg. Also, if the Pack is going to run a lot this year, it would be difficult to do so with Smith, Howell and Leslie on the court at the same time. Smith, Leslie, Wood and Brown who is an excellent rebounder, should give the Pack the versatility and enough rebounding strength to persevere. In additional, Gonzales is also a very feisty rebounder. Speaking of Gonzales, if he doesn’t improve his turnover to assist ratio in the early part of the season, expect Harrow to assume the controls. Harrow is a dynamic and electrifying dare devil who should keep the Pack fans on their toes. My gut feeling is that by mid-season, Harrow will have supplanted Gonzales in the starting lineup. I think that Lowe would be unwise not to try to have both Harrow and Brown play a lot together because they are the future of the Pack—at least for the next 3 years. I expect the Pack to get to the line a lot this year because Brown is a slasher and along with Leslie and with Smith taking up the middle and getting his usually number of fouls, I expect the Pack to rock and roll. I am very excited about watching Brown and Harrow grow up together because those two remind me so much of Fire & Ice (Rodney Monroe and Chris Corchionni), the last great guards the Pack has had. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
Losses
Wed, 05/12/2010 - 11:22 — SurferGosh,
Pretty good on paper. How will they lose any games? Defense?
Let us count the ways.
Wed, 05/12/2010 - 12:53 — JPDOhio1. Forget about playing defense and just try to outscore the opponent.
2. Let egos get in the way of team play if and when freshmen win jobs over returning veterans.
3. Freshmen don't live up to there hype.
There is much reason for optimism about the Pack. But until they deliver on the court, that optimism must be tempered. I am eternally (some would say obsessively) optimistic and therefore believe the Pack will finish in the top four of the ACC this upcoming year. There are no guarantees though.
Well stated
Wed, 05/12/2010 - 08:39 — JPDOhioWell thought out scenario that could be the most likely way that the season pans out.
However it turns out, it is nice to see the excitement that Sid's recruiting class has generated. Should be a ton of fun following Pack hoops next season.
agreed!!!
Wed, 05/12/2010 - 07:46 — kevmcd86excellent post, and agree 100%.
GO WOLFPACK!!!!!!
I agree it's early, but it's fun I guess.
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 17:52 — UNC1998I know nothing about anyone but UNC. I think the team will actually be better without the Wear's twins. Drew II or Marshall will be able to push the ball up the floor more to Williams' liking. The big guys can run (for sure they ain't carrying any extra weight). I'm not saying top of the world good, but they'll be much improved. Defense will be key. I'm confident Bullock and Barnes will score. Henson showed signs of being a very good post player. Zeller is a very agile 7' guy with a nice little hook shot. Anyway, they all better study their practice notes this summer, and improve where they need to. A lot of improvement will be expected by the fans, I'm sure.
More Realistic Duke Lineup
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 10:31 — tbkalmbachPG Nolan Smith
SG Seth Curry
SF Kyle Singler
PF Miles Plumlee
C Mason Plumlee
Coach K probably won't start Irving (freshman) right away, plus Singler fits better as a SF so he can drive to the lane and slip off picks for open threes (this role fit him better last season). Also, Mason and Miles need to be in there together for rebounding and post up play. Irving, Hairston and Andre Dawkins will be rotated in regularly.

NJ point guards and Duke
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 19:42 — jpg (author)The last two (Hurley and Williams) started from the jump. Irving isn't going to be sitting anywhere, let alone Duke which just lost its point guard.
There's a real chance Irving's the best rookie in college basketball next year (yes, better than Barnes).
There's also a real chance Duke won't lose an ACC game.

Conflict?
Tue, 05/11/2010 - 11:11 — SurferHm, if Irving is that good (best rookie in the NCAA) (and on an undefeated team), why is he not on your first or second All-ACC team?
Not sure about that
Tue, 05/11/2010 - 10:08 — Heels20I can see Irving making more of a rookie impact than Barnes because of all the weapons around him, but it's very doubtful Dook will go 16-0 in conference. They are the undisputed preseason #1 team in the ACC, and maybe even the country, but they still have holes to fill. The Plumlees are good, but not great. No one on this team can make up for the loss of Jon Scheyer's brains at the PG position. A chance? Yes. A real chance? Not really.
Undefeated in the ACC?
Tue, 05/11/2010 - 08:28 — JPDOhioThat's just crazy talk. Duke will be good, but not that good.
I am not sure they will be as good as they were last year, when even NC State beat them.
Nolan Smith
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 11:19 — Heels20Is a great scorer, but not a great point guard. Keep in mind that as a sophomore, Smith had an assist:turnover ratio of 58:55 when he was getting much more time at hte point. Even though he's a freshman, Irving will probably be the better option.
Random points on a pointless article
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 08:59 — JPDOhioUNC- If Zeller can stay healthy all year and Drew II can consistently avoid mental errors and turnovers, UNC can finish 4th. Those are two big ifs though.
NC State- I like State higher than 5th, just because of the depth and flexibility they have at every position. Still, their youth and experience make a 5th place prediction realistic. Plus, with all the potential firepower they now have, will anyone still play defense? This is why I think Scott Wood may start and, even if he doesn't, he will play a lot.
Va Tech- For no good reason, I have a hard time seeing them as a potential ACC champ. But Delaney's return gives them a legit shot.
Duke- I think Duke is going to miss Jon Scheyer more than some may believe. With only two returning starters and a freshman at point, could Duke be overrated? Is Seth Curry as good as Stephon or will he have trouble lighting it up when he has to face ACC defenders night after night?
No matter what, if you thought last year was whacky, wait til next year.
Perfect analysis on Dook
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 10:00 — Heels20Two biggest questions:
How will a Curry do in the ACC? There is no doubt Stephen was unbelievable at Davidson, and was a threat when facing any team in the nation. The word is that Seth should be just as good. However, we're talking about two totally different systems. Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler are going to get their buckets. Seth will not be able to take as many shots as Stephen. The question is: Can he be as effective of a scorer when he's not the star of the team? This should be an interesting experiment.
Can Kyrie Irving make up for the loss of Scheyer? Let's be honest, everybody. Jon Scheyer was the glue of this Dook team. Smith's improvement after the departure of Henderson made a national title possible, but Jon Scheyer was what made this team a consistent power every time they stepped on the floor. When he wasn't scoring from the field, he found ways to get to the line. When defenders focused on him, he found ways to get the ball in the hands of the teammate with the best shot. I know Vasquez made a lot happen with much less talent around him, but I still thought Scheyer should have been the league MVP. Irving offers blazing speed and excellent ball-handling ability, but will his skill allow Dook to produce as much as it did with Scheyer's brains? That is TBD. Can't wait to see how this year turns out.
Pointless
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 07:51 — pammy1What an irrelevant article. They usually get things wrong in the MIDDLE of the season.....let alone 5 mos from it starting. They have no idea who will be good enough to start once the season gets going. The coaches themselves probably don't know for sure yet who'll be starting.......especially on a regular basis. Team chemistry cannot be predicted before the players even start practicing together.....give me a break.
nothing pointless
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 19:46 — gvillegatrits fodder and banter for the dogs days of summer coming shortly.
besides, if you would have agreed with JPG, you wouldn't have complained.
Pointless?
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 08:35 — JPDOhioThen why waste time replying?
Besides, how can you say something is pointless when it gives us a chance to argue with JP now and point out how wrong he is later?

how bad is the ACC
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 18:24 — gvillegatrwhen Seth Curry is a projected second team ALL ACC???
I just don't see it.
Curry
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 20:30 — JPDOhioOne guys opinion, not a referendum on the ACC. I too think 2nd Team is a stretch. 20 points a game at Liberty is not the same as doing it for Duke in the ACC.
The kid will likely be good. That good his first year? Not so sure.
Typical Duke hater
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 19:26 — weslorocksGvillegatr,
Instead of believing everything you read in the N+O, why not try thinking for yourself? Every year the ACC is reportedly terrible, but in the past decade the ACC has brought home 5 out of 10 championships. No other conference comes close to that.
Sincerely,
THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS-DUKE BLUE DEVILS!
huh?
Mon, 05/10/2010 - 19:42 — gvillegatrwhat does all that have to do with someone who hasn't played one minute in the ACC or for DUIke? last time I checked his name was SETH not STEPHON.
learn how the game is played before you enter this room.
Really?
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 19:19 — weslorocksDid you see Duke winning the National Championship?
State and Carolina
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 11:59 — Heels20I haven't paid enough attention to teams outside the triangle in the ACC this off-season (Didn't know Sylven Landesberg was leaving early), so I don't feel like digging into those.
What surprised me most about this list was Richard Howell was in and Scott Wood was out. I understand it because Howell is a better post player than Leslie, but it seems as though Leslie would open up so many more open opportunities for Wood from 3-point range. At the same time, this line-up is favorable for Tracy Smith, as there is pretty much no way opposing teams would be able to double team him.
I'm kind of surprised to see Bullock as a projected starter, but I guess it makes sense. It gives the starting line-up some more height, which is something we desperately need. If Zeller or Henson goes down for a long period of time, it will be a miracle if we make the tournament. I hope Barnes and Bullock will be talented enough to start right away. It doesn't look like that will be a problem for Barnes, but the jury is still out on Bullock.
As far as Duke is concerned
Wed, 05/12/2010 - 09:22 — unc098As far as Duke is concerned I see Dawkins starting over Kyrie at least intially.
or even Curry. I have predicted that Curry would bust into the line up mid season. Everyone has underestimated these kids. He will be the sleeper surprise for the Devils this season
Heels:
Humm. I agree about Bullock. We need some outside shooting desperately. I also agree that with our lack of inside players we will be lucky to make the tourney this coming year unless Roy can pull a rabbit out a hat and bring in some unseen talent. Good luck.
It will be interesting to see how Leslie fits into the State team concept.
UNC and State
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 13:36 — jpg (author)UNC will go as far as Barnes and Bullock take them. I aslo expect Henson to have a big year. (I know, fool me once ...)
Wood will play the 2 and 3 (like last year) and will get plenty of time, but neither Brown or Leslie are sitting and if Leslie's not a 4, then that means you need Big Rich to get rebounds and defend.

Wow
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 11:49 — Heels20Dook will be good enough to win with just 4 starters?
Can crapolina get into the
Sun, 05/09/2010 - 14:01 — weslorocksCan crapolina get into the real tournament with two unproven freshmen, the returning miscreants from last year's team, and more sorry "coaching" from ol roy? Probably not.
