Players speak about altercation

Here are quotes from the players involved in an altercation Saturday with 1.9 seconds remaining in North Carolina’s 93-76 win at N.C. State.

With 1.9 seconds remaining, North Carolina reserve forward Michael Copeland was driving for a layup after a long pass from Bobby Frasor when N.C. State center Ben McCauley knocked Copeland to the floor with an intentional foul.

Copeland got back up and shoved McCauley before referee Les Jones separated them.

The referees called double technical fouls on the play, and North Carolina coach Roy Williams sent Copeland to the locker room early.

There was no flagrant foul and no ejection, so neither player should face disciplinary action for the next game.

Here’s what the players had to say about it:

MICHAEL COPELAND

"He hit me in my head. It was a hard foul, Bobby gave me a pass and I wanted to score – just like anybody, I hadn’t played and I wanted to score. And I went up; I guess he was frustrated, too, and he fouled me hard.”

"I was just trying to score, and he took me out.”

Q: Do you regret doing it?

A: Definitely, I regret doing it. It was a bad mistake on my part, and I should have just let it go and shot my free throws.

Q: What did Roy say as he came across the court?

A: I can’t tell you that (laughing).

Q: Did McCauley say anything to you?

A: I heard McCauley, and he was saying “Come on!’ He wanted to fight, but nobody was going to fight; the referees weren’t going to let us fight. . . .It was frustration on my part, I wanted to score. … Bobby, he probably shouldn’t have made the pass; he probably should have just taken the ball out and let time run out. But he wanted me to score. I shouldn’t have did that; it wasn’t a big foul. But I was frustrated.

BEN MCCAULEY

Q: Can you take us through what happened at the end?

A: I was a little disappointed that he was even going up for it. I thought that was a little disrespectful at that point. The game was over. I wish it didn’t happen the way it did, but I didn’t want him to get an easy dunk. To me, I thought it just was a little unnecessary. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone about it as physical as I did, but like I said, I didn’t want him to do that in front of our crowd and go off the floor with a dunk like that?

Q: Did he make any kind of threat to you?

A: He came up in my face, and went chest to chest with me. I didn’t really hear what he said, but as soon as he got off the ground, he came right at me. Somebody came in between us, and nothing was going to happen at that point. You’d be an idiot to take a swing.

Q: Did you make a peace offering when the dust settled?

A: I did. And I told Coach Williams afterward, I’m sorry. He said he was sorry, too, he didn’t mean for that to happen. No one really wants stuff like that to happen. It’s unfortunate, but it happened and we have to move on from there.

Q: You did look like you were saying, “Not in my house.” Were you defending your turf?

A: Absolutely. He can do that on his own floor or whatever, but don’t come into our home building with the game over pretty much and try to dunk like that. It’s kind of disrespectful.

Q: (Copeland) said that you said, “Come on,” and he felt like you wanted to fight.

A: No. What I did say, to be completely honest with you, when he came up to my face is, “What are you going to do? What are you going to do?” Don’t take a shot at me, because that’s going to get you ejected. You’re not going to be able to play in the next game, and that’s not smart on your part. I had no intention to entice him to do anything.

BOBBY FRASOR

Q: In retrospect, would you have thrown the pass to Copeland there at the end?

A: Probably not. I probably should have taken the high road and just dribbled the ball out, but I came in with him, I wanted him to score, I wanted him to get some memories. But if I had known that was going to happen, I probably would have thought twice about it.

Q: How much was it a symptom of rivalry?

A: It’s unfortunate that that happened, but we don’t really like State, and State doesn’t really like us. It’s known. Fans, they know it to. My guess is that if we had been playing some small school, he wouldn’t have done that, but since it’s State …

regretful

My assessment of how it went down is this:
-Frasor's an experienced player who gets his share of minutes (if not more than he deserves) and should have known that the tasteful thing was to just stop and let the clock run out
-Copeland caught the ball 5 ft from the basket, and while it was a little tacky to go for the extra 2 pts in a convincing win with <2 sec left, it's understandable that he wants to get the points.
-McCauley hard foul was tasteless and he made only a nominal effort to go for the ball, but I can understand that he was frustrated at a tough loss and was ticked at Copeland for running it up.
-After the foul however, Copeland was in position to take the high ground, his team had won the game, and he was going to get 2 ft's, he just didn't need to amplify things

I wish Frasor would have just pulled back and let the clock run out, so this whole incident could have been avoided.

Couple of observations

1. McCauley said, "You’d be an idiot to take a swing". He did (with the foul), so he is. Granted, Copeland reacted inappropriately. They were both in the wrong.
2. It is a sad state of affairs, with this providing the only excitement during the game.

To all UNC Fans...

Your Coach your players and even Copeland said he was wrong in doing what he did. Roy even told Ben not to apologize for the "hard foul" because there is nothing to apologize for. The game was over run out the clock and move on to Maryland its as simple as that. So it seems that the only one with some class at UNC is Roy Williams. Take a page from your Coach admit you are wrong and move on.

State sucks - What's new?

Ok - let's face it.....State sucks....always has sucked.....and always will suck.  You were totally embarrassed by the arse kicking UNC gave you and you could not take the "!" that Copeland was so ready to give you.  Haha It's going to be a loooong year for the Pack (what's new)....just get over the fact that you will never be able to compete with UNC/Dook and now even Wake Forest.  Sucks to be you! Can't wait to see you guys again on Feb 18th!!

Tar.................

The truth...

McCauley fouled Copeland on a clean play. Copeland overeacted. You can tell where the class is by reading these comments.

lol.

clean play!?  yes, you are right.  we do know where the class is in this post ... and it is no where to be found in your post!@!

1.) Frasor should not have passed the ball.  (blame him if anyone from UNC ... he know better)

2.) Copeland had the ball a couple of feet from the basket ... what do you expect from a guy who doesnt get on the court much?

3.) McCauley decided to take his embrassement of a game out on Copeland for the late FG attempt, intentionally.

4.) Copeland reacted in a way most guys do when they feel like they were intentionally fouled in a vulnerable state AND are actually able to get up from it.

5.) McCauley got the heck out of the area b/c he knew he was wrong and something was going to happen if Copeland was able to get up from it.

6.) Copeland over reacted a little bit, but b/c of how far he had to go to get McCauleys attention, it was blown way more out of proportion than what it really was.

7.) It was UNC and NCSU.  would you expect anything less in a blowout of a game ...

I didn't think so.

MISSING THE POINT

McCauley should transfer to Duke. His lack of class fits well with Paulus and Henderson.

Get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Copeland was hoping to score in a game, any game. His mistake was going after Ben. Ben chose to foul Copeland hard, very hard. Both of these players made bad decisions with 1.9 seconds left in the game ! Get over it!! They are college students, and they are going to make mistakes!

Yep-dunking is only allowed on your home court

I am so glad all the Miss Manners wolfpuke fans (and Mr. Etiquette himself, Ben McCauley,) have let Mike Copeland know that it is disrespectful to dunk at an away game! I forgot that rule in my Basketball-for-Idiots book. Classy state players NEVER dunk in an opponents "house"! How rude! Of course you should slam someone to the floor by the side of their face if they try to dunk - God I'm glad we kicked your pathetic asses - in "your house" and I was there to watch every magical minute of it! Boo Hoo, it sucks to be you.

hey lost-in-walmart...

The phenomenon is called dunking in your opponents building when you're up by almost 20...and to be honest, Ben actually went for the ball.  It was a hard foul, but what makes hard fouls look so bad is when you do them to cry babies like copeland or hansbro or any other tarhole player for the last 50 years...they scream like bloody murder.

Also, we are not your rivals, remember.

huh?

maybe I forgot how to read.  but I see no where in the blog you are referring to that he said anything about NCSU being UNC's rival??

what are you talking about???

I'll repeat myself so you can hear me in Wal-Mart

I LOVED WATCHING YOUR ASS GET STOMPED TODAY!!!!

THE "TARHOLES" SMACKED THE PACK AGAIN!!!!!!!!

WHINEY, WHINEY, WE SPANKED YOUR HINEY

NEED A TISSUE?

How's school going?

How are you enjoying 2nd grade so far? Have you started learning subtraction yet, or is that later on?

Copeland's an idiot. Does he

Copeland's an idiot. Does he really think that McCauley wanted to fight him? Ben had every opportunity to retaliate when Mike charged and took at swing at him, but Ben just held his arms out like, "Dude, are you serious?"

C'mon, Mike...show some class.

thats one way of looking at it.

McCauley knew he was wrong.  thats why he ran away from the play when he made his intentional foul (like an NBA player!).  he was embarassed after he processed it and thats why he didnt throw a punch.  scaredy cat.  he wants to harm someone when he has the advantage, but not when he is on a level playing field.

Oh, wow! It's all become so

Oh, wow! It's all become so clear to me now! Man, I feel like such an ass after all this time.

Let me apologize, first off, for all the nasty things I've said to you in my replies. I assumed you were just an average, garden-vareity Carolina fan, but it's finally dawned on me the situation and I just want to say I'm sorry.

I think it's really great what folks like you have been able to accomplish, despite your special abilities, and I feel really, really badly for all things I've said in the past. I just didn't know.

So keep fightin', Tiger! I'm rooting for you! You can overcome!

??

what does your post have to do with mine?

I'm gonna have a fit if that guy scores

That's pretty much what McCauley did by knocking the you know what out of Copeland just to keep him from scoring.  McCauley had a little fit  like a 2 year old, got mad and wanted to bite (in this case whack) somebody.  The game was over for state and McCauley didn't have to commit such a hard foul.  Next time one of the NC State cheerleaders will run out in front of an advancing player to keep them from scoring.  Copeland should not have acted like he did after it was over but McCauley started the game down that path at the end.

Are you serious? So Ben

Are you serious? So Ben should've just let Copeland have an easy stroll to the basket?

Screw that. If Duke's beating the holy hell out of y'all in the Dean Dome (God I can only hope) and at the end of the game Gerald Henderson's taking the ball up for a punctuation dunk in front of Hansbrah, you don't think Tyler's going to hack the sh*t out of him?

Copeland should've known better. Frasor should've known better than to make the leading pass. But don't fault Ben for preventing Copeland getting an easy basket. That's just asinine.

Honestly, no. Hansbrough

Honestly, no. Hansbrough has more class.

Ahem...

Ben McCauley is not Tyler Hansbrough. Gerald Henderson is not a seldom used player just trying to get in the linescore. I think the two sides just won't agree, so as a Tar Heel fan...I'm moving on to Maryland.
