A knee injury cost UNC receiver Brandon Tate a spot in the first round of the NFL Draft but not with one of the best teams in the NFL.
The New England Patriots took Tate in the third round, 93rd overall, teaming him up with all-pro receiver Randy Moss and all-everything quarterback Tom Brady.
Tate tore his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee in the sixth game and missed the final seven games of his senior season. He posted big numbers when he was healthy with five total touchdowns and 23.5 yards per catch.
Tate had been able to do light running in the pre-draft workouts but wasn't able to show off his best asset, his speed. Pre-draft speculation had Tate going anywhere from the fourth round to the sixth. A failed drug test for marijuana -- according to unnamed sources cited by FoxSports.com -- further complicated his status, but it didn't scare away the Patriots, who are renowned for drafting off the beaten path.
“It was a big relief,” Tate said. “I didn’t know what to expect but the team I went to says it all."
The Patriots are also known to take versatile players and Tate finished his career as the NCAA's career leader in combined kick return yards (3,523 yards).
Tate was hopeful he would be ready for training camp in August. He joked he could trade rehab tips with his new quarterback Tom Brady, who tore the ACL in his left knee in the 2008 opener.
“They’ll bring me up there and I’ll rehab with them,” Tate said. “Whatever happens, happens.”

Tate is on the way
Mon, 04/27/2009 - 01:25 — jeromfitzto a Super Bowl real soon. This is a properly the best choice for wideout in the NFL by the Patroits. New England seem to trade down and get some smart key players to keep things in a systematic scheme. I'm not a New England fan at times but if they ride out I might take the ride also if my other teams get knock off in the playoffs. Tate is a quality player that got speed when healthy.
He never said
Sun, 04/26/2009 - 20:13 — gvillegatr... Butch brought in Tate. He was saying Butch had talent when he came to UNC. now can he bring in even more talent on his own and win the title ...
the answer: YES HE CAN! book us for the title game in three years.
sure
Mon, 04/27/2009 - 08:05 — AlleyOopsjust as soon as he stops losing those big games
41-10
sad and pathetic

True
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 12:54 — SurferRight on G'ville, but I guess these State fans need some kind of break, some minuscule little nugget to grasp on to. Now that spring practice is over, you could always respond with 52-20.
?
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 14:47 — AlleyOopsAgain, 41-10 is relevant no matter how much you try to make it not so. Miniscule? Then I guess all of last season is miniscule, and so is your bowl game, our bowl game, and let's throw our basketball seasons in there too since they're over.
See surfer, 41-10 is still what happened last time these two teams met. Kinda pathetic you would think responding with a final score from a game 13 years prior does any good. Unless Mack Brown and Leon Johnson are coming back, you'll just have to grit your teeth and pray there's no repeat during your re-match with Russell Wilson, Nate Irving and the gang.
Misunderstood
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 15:52 — SurferAgree 41-10 is relevant, I am not saying that it is not, but in the grand scheme of things, 6-7, it is small, but well remembered, yes I stayed until the end. It was a great victory by State and it is good that you have that to hang on to. That is all I am saying. Regarding basketball, understandably you can through yours out. We will, however, keep ours for a while.
glad you can see the light
Wed, 04/29/2009 - 05:42 — AlleyOopsI'll hold onto basketball. it is what it is and we'll have to live with it for the next year.
I just wonder if your premise is the same with basketball. Is wiping out Duke twice just small in the grand scheme of things or is it the 2nd and 3rd sweetest victories behind the national championship (and congrats on that near-inevitable feat)?
If so, I'm not sure how a 31-point waxing of your arch-rival can be "small" in the "grand scheme" of a 6-7 season that was largely uneventful all those games we didn't have Wilson and/or Irving.
While I'd be fine with 8-4 (5-3 ACC) this year and am not expecting something like a 10-win year as some are doing, you have to take off your blue-tinted glasses if you don't think last year's record is misleading. With RW and NI starting and finishing a game state was 5-1. Without, 1-6.
Excellent
Wed, 04/29/2009 - 12:49 — SurferYes, beating Duke is nice, but I would rather have the NC. I always considered Dook as UNC's arch-rival, not NCSU, but I understand that State sees it otherwise. Don't even bring up injuries, we had our share as well.
actually, it's quite relevant
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 06:44 — AlleyOopsI mean, you talk about how Butch is going to take your team to championships within the next 3 years (you really think he'll stay that long?), but how is that supposed to happen when you can't win in the big games?
Butch coulda had ya'll in the ACC title game but then he loses 41-10 to a 4-6 NCSU team.
Maybe for "championships" you can turn your eyes to your alma mater EZU. I mean winning Conference USA is quite a feat considering the competition. It's like beating Duke each and every week.
talent
Sun, 04/26/2009 - 19:17 — fbeachI hate to tell you that butch davis didn't bring in tate this is the start of his 3 year.
Wow!!!
Sun, 04/26/2009 - 18:39 — uBniceSo, UNC had three receivers, 2 WRs and a TE, that were taken in the draft? If Tate hadn't gotten hurt, he probably would have been first round also. Ok then, Butch Davis had some talent. Will Butch Davis take UNC to the next level? A football championship (don't laugh!) would match well with that basketball championship. Bring the rain!
delusional much?
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 06:44 — AlleyOopsI hope you're talking about an ACC Championship, because your sentence makes it seem like you mean national, in which case Butch would have to win multiple big games during the year and lose at max 1.
41-10 (I only remind you because you probably left/stopped watching right around 28-10)
National Championship
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 12:24 — uBniceNo, I correctly meant National Championship as I was relating it to the basketball National Championship. UNC is a place that wins National Championships (over 34 NCAA team championships). Hey, for football, it could happen. BTW, I wish NCSU the best. I think Russell is awesome!
