Parents beaming after FedEx home run

Bookmark and Share

OMAHA, Neb. — Joe Federowicz fielded at least a dozen calls and watched SportsCenter at least a four times in the 12 hours immediately after his son, North Carolina catcher Tim, smashed a ninth inning grand slam Friday night that kept the Tar Heels from being eliminated from the College World Series.

"Tim has hit home runs before, but not in this position — bases loaded, two outs, at the College World Series,'' Joe Federowicz said in a phone interview from Apex this morning. "As a dad, you know he can do it, but I was just thinking, 'get a base hit.'"

While Joe watched — then re-watched — the dramatic hit into the left field grandstands on TV in Apex (he has a plane ticket to Omaha for Monday, if the Tar Heels advance to the championship series), Tim's mom, Karen Ananea, watched from the stands in Omaha. She said she never saw where the ball landed, or her son round the bases, because she was immediately enveloped with hugs by fellow UNC families.

"I remember watching him hit his first home run when he was 10 years old,'' said Ananea, also from Apex, whose voice was still hoarse Saturday morning from all of her cheering. "Ten years later, he hit his first grand slam."

Ananea said that after all of the late night interviews, Tim was still being modest about his accomplishment, focusing on the team and thinking about beating Fresno State tonight. But he was particularly excited by one thing: UNC basketball coach Roy Williams, who attended the game, congratulated him afterwards.
