There are plenty of seats left for N.C. State fans who haven’t yet bought tickets to the Papajohns.com Bowl.
N.C. State has sold just under 3,000 of its allotment of 10,000 tickets for the bowl, assistant athletics director for ticket operations Brian Kelly said early Wednesday evening.
Kelly said traffic on the ticket office’s telephone lines and web site has been steady since the bowl announcement was made Sunday. The Wolfpack (6-6) will meet Rutgers (7-5) in the bowl on Dec. 29 in Birmingham, Ala.
School officials are offering an opportunity for N.C. State fans who can’t make the trip to support the school by purchasing tickets to be donated to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters charity in Birmingham.
Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at 919-865-1510 or gopack.com.

State-Carolina
Sat, 12/13/2008 - 17:13 — rbl1944JPMajor,
My guess is you are speaking from the vantage point of recent history when Duke has been pathetic. There was a day when Duke was a powerhouse, although that has been decades ago. I believe (and hope) Cutcliffe will restore some respectability to Duke football, and thus make the Carolina-Duke football game more meaningful that it has been in recent years.
When my Dad was in school, UVA was the primary rival, albeit Duke replaced them along the way. State is a parvenu, and doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Duke, although admittedly the Wolfpack has been much better than the Blue Devils in the past 20 years.
When I was at Carolina, we opened the season against State, so maybe we should reinstate this. They are an in-state school and conference member, so I suppose the game deserves a special place on the schedule. Unfortunately, we seldom play Wake Forest, one of the unfavorable by-products of the expansion that Johnny Swofford imposed upon us, so there isn't much we can do about placing the Deacons in a preferred scheduling spot.
Chapel Hill College's Football Rivals
Mon, 12/15/2008 - 13:58 — wolfpackcaniac1. Duke (obvious reasons)
2. UVA (because rbl's granddad's classmates used to play them)
3. South Carolina (have the word "Carolina" in their name)
4. Mississippi State (ever since they lost by 2 in the '74 Sun Bowl, just hate their guts!)
5. Duke (again) (wished they played them twice)
6. North Dakota (have the word "North" in their name)
7. Lenoir-Rhyne (sells more car flags than unc-ch, players upset thats all they see driving around chapel hill)
--- So no room for N. C. State. To be rivals with NC's best football program could be getting yourself up for a let down every year possibly?

Fri, 12/12/2008 - 17:59 — rbl1944Mad_Max,
You need to get real, man. We Carolina fans do not care what State fans think of us, although one doesn't see much evidence of thinking exhibited by the State fans on this blog. Regarding storming the field, you might want to check your sports page. State won, so there was no storming of the field. If we stormed the field in the past, it was to celebrate one of the team's few victories, not to express joy over defeating a big rival. As I posted earlier, Duke is our primary rival, as you should know unless you live in a cave, and one could make the argument that Virginia is #2.
I was at the recent-Carolina-State game, and commend the Wolfpack for a great game. You won soundly, and deserve to be congratulated. While losing always hurts, we atoned for it the following week by defeating Duke, thereby retaining the Victory Bell. If State is such a big rival for us, why don't we play them last and have something akin to the Victory Bell to award to the winner? I believe the answer to the two points raised in my question puts to rest the rivalry issue.
as a carolina fan, i would
Fri, 12/12/2008 - 19:52 — JPMajoras a carolina fan, i would have to disagree on the rivalry issue. in "football" NC State is our biggest rival no doubt. Though we play duke last and for the victory bell doesnt mean their our biggest rival. Never have i thought of Duke being more of a rivalry. Hands down do i give it to NC State.. we should be playing them last and for some type of prize..

Thu, 12/11/2008 - 19:56 — rbl1944I have never seen the statistic (1/3 of Carolina's med/dental students are State grads), but would like to congratulate them for finally going to a real college. How many Rhodes Scholars did State have this year?
State Tickets
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 19:30 — rbl1944Congratulations to State for their resounding victory over us on that cold November day. Frankly, we have no rage at all, since we defeated our true rival (Duke) the following week. Wolfpack Nation, you are not in our class, academically, socially, or athletically, so you don't count at all. Good luck against the Scarlet Knights. I hope the 3,000 State fans in attendance enjoy the game.
this is the difference
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 23:00 — gvillegatrb/tn me and the guy who went to UNC! LOL!! I even made a face while reading this post!

Thu, 12/11/2008 - 20:23 — mad_maxtypical unc fan. it's usually not the coaches and players that we hate, it's the fans like you! you will never have any credibility with real fans because we see right through your hypocritical nonsense. unc fan cannot say state isn't their rival when unc fans storm the freaking field after a win over us! get real idiot
and UNC fans wonder
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 19:47 — statefan2010Why state fans really don't care for yall.............this post pretty well sums it up. If we are so academically inferior to UNC then how does it happen that roughly a 1/3 of UNC's med/op/dental students are NCSU grads?
I'm not sure that statistic is true....
Fri, 12/12/2008 - 21:17 — UNC1998Is there a source for your claim?
It might not be exactly 1/3
Fri, 12/12/2008 - 22:40 — statefan2010It might not be exactly 1/3 but I do know that a good part of the applicaints from NCSU that do want to go to UNC for any of those 3 programs do get in. I think that out of the 173 incoming Med students there were like 15(?) former NCSU students.
So what you're saying is that UNC has a desireable med school
Sat, 12/13/2008 - 15:09 — UNC1998Am I getting that right? Not to argue, but it would seem redundant for all UNC campuses to offer the same programs. What is nice is that a student can go from one to the other with very little difference in the bachlor degree education. Professional programs in turn can take students from any of those campuses.
BTW, I attended pharmacy school at UNC. When I enrolled in the school in 1995 there were 150 incoming students. A total of 8 were from other universities. At that time a bachelors degree was not required for enrollment. To that point, I do not think it important where a student gets the first two college out of the way. Typically the same courses are required at all schools, regardless of major.
?
Sat, 12/13/2008 - 15:23 — statefan2010Pharm school I don't know alot about, but yes I am saying that UNC does have a great Med school. I'm just a little confused as to what your taking issue with in that post
I'm taking no issue at all.
Sat, 12/13/2008 - 16:51 — UNC1998My original question was regarding your statement of 1/3 of the students. My last post was just a first person perspective on your statement of students from different NC colleges going to UNC for professional training.
I personally think NCSU is a highly regarded school in the disciplines of study it offers.
Ok

gvillegatr, are you going to
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 14:30 — jmnorrisgvillegatr,
are you going to the UNC and/or ECU bowl game(s)? you seem to be focused on how ncsu fans have all their excuses. why dont you try and take their comments as what they are - very valid REASONS. you talk SO much trash about how pack fans make excuses. When your team (greenville = ECU but you seem more UNC...which one do you root for?) goes to a bowl thats 8+ hours of driving away and costs you a bundle of money around xmas time, ill do my best to remember to email you and see what kind of EXCUSES you give as to why you won't go. I don't think ncsu will have a great fan showing down there, but I also personally believe that you and your teams fans wouldn't do any better. next time, ask yourself if you would really go see your team play under the same conditions.
here are my excuses! lol.
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 22:53 — gvillegatrI'll be in my brothers wedding, in Pinehurst, on the 27th so that obviously rules out the UNC game.
Wife cant make it to Memphis for the ECU game b/c shes on call on the 1st at the hospital. i know the games on the 2nd, but i'm not flying in on gameday and leaving the next. we've gone round and round about me possibly going (solo) with my college buddys (some married, some not), but thats not happening at this moment. she knows too much if you know what I mean! I have the money to go, so dont worry about that.
and if you dont think ECU will sell out Memphis (their allotment), you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I was there in 94 and 95 and it was sold out as far as ECU tickets went.
We used to think we'd be back in Memphis about every third year at worse ... obviously that has not been the case. The fans are ready to get back to Silky O' Sullivans and BB Kings and all the great restaurants on Beale St.
And I grew up a UNC fan. Will ALWAYS be a UNC fan. admittedly, alot of my friends (and a lot of you guys) used to root for UNC ... didnt get in there, went to NCSU or ECU or wherever and act like UNC is the devil now. everyone of you know a guy like this. I'm not that guy. I root for both and always will. sue me.

Thu, 12/11/2008 - 10:07 — gvillegatrNCSU was never a play for Charlotte. I t was never reported here anyways. you guys were reported to the DC bowl if allowed to go. not to mention most of your fans have been down grading the Meinke Bowl over the last few days??
This is just another post with excuses. Quit your whining and be glad you are playing somewhere. all you guys ever do is talk about how NCSU supports their football team to no end. go support it.
1. Something must be said
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 12:58 — wolfpackcaniac1. Something must be said for the clear consensus among bowl officials that the pack is considered the best 4-4 team in the ACC (Caro-whine-a also managed to get to 4-4 despite best efforts).
2. The only bowl game in the state wanted to choose the best football program in the state but was told they had to settle for their 2nd (3rd?) choice.
To summarize: 1. Pack team is better. (CH team got the better bowl because of technicalities) 2. Pack fans are better. (CH fans can accidently go to Charlotte for their bowl game, Pack fans would have to drive 9~10 hrs for theirs - hardly an argument for selling more tickets)
""At the end of the season,
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 11:32 — talligood""At the end of the season, I think they are playing as well as anybody in the conference," Meineke Car Care Bowl executive director Will Webb said of the surging Wolfpack, which has won four straight.
Charlotte, which picks sixth in the ACC bowl order, might have its choice of Clemson (7-5) or the Wolfpack, two teams with large fan bases and proven track record of selling bowl tickets.
"We'd be excited to have either one of them," Webb said, without committing to either team." -N&O "Wolfpack now waits for bowl" 11/30/08
At least get your facts straight before you start making uneducated comments like that.
And I absolutely cannot understand why you can not let go and stop posting degrading comments on an NCSU article. Perhaps you should spend your time posting stuff on UNCs articles to get people hyped up to make some noise for the game because god knows y'all are going to need all the help you can get against Curry and the rest of the WVU offense!
fishing ...
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 12:15 — gvillegatrwhat is the guy supposed to say. (but first i'd like to point out he never said he wanted NCSU in Charlotte.) this guy is not in the business of pissing schools off. NCSU may be a viable option next year. Webb knew NCSU couldnt go to the Meinke Bowl. he also knew ClemPson would not fall to them. everyone lives in a PC worlld but me! book it!
and to answer your last question I am guilty when it comes to not letting things go (in sports) and when I see a post that is full of crap, I feel the need to call them out.
I'd love to go. Can you
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 11:08 — JamesinWillowSpringsI'd love to go. Can you spot me the $500 (tickets, plane fare for four, hotel accomodations)?

you dont want to go.
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 11:38 — gvillegatreconomy or no economy. if you want to go bad enough, you will go. you could put it on a CC and pay it back when you get your tax money back in 2.5 months. If you dont get any money back, then you make too much money and can afford to pay for it right now.
fact of the matter is, you dont want to go b/c it is a crappy bowl in a crappy town with nothing to do.

Thu, 12/11/2008 - 11:47 — JamesinWillowSpringsSo you see no reason why a $500+ expenditure might keep some fans from buying tickets to one bowl game, or why paying 1/5 of that to attend the Car Care bowl might make it easier for other fans to do so?
"Man, I'm so glad you're a mouthpiece for the Tar Heel fanbase and not State."

3 guesses
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 22:32 — gvillegatrI give this place (you specifically) perfectly good rationalization as to how you can afford to go. you choose to ignore it b/c you live outside of your means or you have a credit card limit of a college student (not much).
but my honest guess would be you have absolutely no desire to go to Birmingham and watch your beloved Pack play in a crappy bowl. no one does ... except 3,000 fans. those are your real fans. not the ones who would travel to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl, or the ones who would travel to Miami for the Orange Bowl. we all know that would sell out.
thats all I have to say, believe it or not, on this subject. i feel like i write the same thing over and over and over.

Different bowl situations
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 09:56 — SuperStuffUNC-CH plays on Saturday, can drive a few hours to the game, and drive home afterwards negating having to stay in a hotel or miss any time from work.
NCSU plays on Monday, can drive nine hours to the game, and have to get a hotel for the night before driving back. Or if your not driving spend more money on plane tickets. Plus the fact that you'll have to burn two days vacation.
Which do you think is the easier decision to make for a fan when it comes to economics of attending a bowl game? It's a no brainer. That's why NC State fans wished the NCAA hadn't prevented Charlotte from asking them to that bowl.

Wed, 12/10/2008 - 22:23 — JPMajorWhy do wolfpack fans continue to bring up the score of the UNC vs NC State game? I'm pretty sure every UNC fan know's the score by now. Time to move on. It really doesn't bother us anymore. We got out played and thats all their is to it. But give NC State fans some time, they'll sell plenty of tickets. I'm sure they will sell more than the Rutgers faithful. But in saying that, all ive heard is NC State fans say how well they travel very well. < 3,000 tickets isnt showing much as of right now....
also, i checked tarheelblue.com, and saw that the womans soccer team won yet another national championship and the men are in the final four. Congrats to those ladies and good luck to the men! GO HEELS!
I gotta agree
Thu, 12/11/2008 - 14:39 — jmnorrisAlthough Im a NCSU fan for life, I kinda agree that we pack fans bring up the UNC score way too much and we bring it up in the worst arguements. Don't get me wrong, that win was the probably the most dominant football win vs UNC that i'll see from the pack for plenty of years, but I like acting like we've "been there before." give credit where credit is due (which has happened somewhat...the ones that havent are the idiot unc fans) but also don't get your head too big for your helmet! yes we beat unc. yes it was AWESOME. yes we all loved it. yes unc fans hated it. now lets go try and make intellectual arguements and have some constructive and insightful debates with the unc fans - not just use the scoredboard! oh ya GO STATE!

Not a true number IMO
Wed, 12/10/2008 - 19:49 — nitronicNot all NC State fans are going to buy tickets from the NC State allotment. Their allotment is in the endzone! You could go through the papajohnsbowl.com website and purchase them for $45 right in the middle of the field. I would expect that most fans who have a choice will purchase their tickets in the middle of the field. I know I did! I believe the true number is well over 3,000.
RE: Not a true number
Fri, 12/12/2008 - 11:42 — timbobwyattYou're exactly right -- people are buying tickets directly from the bowl:
http://tennessean.com/article/20081212/SPORTS0602/812120389/1002/SPORTS
"Officials at the Dec. 29 PapaJohns.com Bowl (North Carolina State vs. Rutgers) in Birmingham, Ala., say tickets are going fast. 'Our sales across the board are up fairly significantly,' said Bo Kerr, sales and marketing manager. 'Our game may be a little bit unique just because this is our third year, so we only have two years of data to compare it to.'"
Of course, that stadium is so huge that there's no reason to buy tickets beforehand. I'm just going to buy tickets at the game, like I did the last time they played in Birmingham.
RE: Not a true number
Sun, 12/14/2008 - 11:13 — timbobwyattEven more evidence that NCSU fans are buying tickets directly from the bowl:
http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/sports/122915974169330.xml&coll=2
"Local ticket sales for the Papajohns.com Bowl are ahead of pace from the
game's first two years, bowl officials said. As of Friday afternoon, the bowl had directly sold more than double the amount sold in the first week a year ago."
"The majority of fans who have purchased from the Papajohns.com Bowl directly since Sunday are N.C. State supporters."
The article also presents a number of reasons why attendance would be expected to be down this year, had the bowl not found a team like NCSU that travels well:
Ticket prices for locals are about double what they have been in previous years. Therefore corporate sponsors of the game will only get about half as many tickets as in previous years to "hand out." Also, the game is on a Monday afternoon for the first time.
I swear ...
Wed, 12/10/2008 - 21:15 — gvillegatrI am going to petition the school or even the state to rename NCSU the "Excuses."

I was merely stating my opinion and was providing something to think about. I'll state it in a slightly different way. I believe that merely looking at how many tickets were sold through the NC State ticket office does not give an accurate representation of how many true Wolfpack fans have bought tickets for the game. I believe many fans will buy or have bought their tickets directly from the Papa Johns Bowl ticket office.
On a personal note, I think you need to let go of some of your rage or disappointment from that cold afternoon in November. :-p
