Josh Czajkowski doesn’t seem worried about making his first start as N.C. State's place-kicker.
Czajkowski, a sophomore, has yet to kick in a game and will make his debut Aug. 28 at South Carolina.
“I’m really confident,” Czajkowski said. “Our specialists are looking really good, consistently. We’ve been working together for a long time.”
Wolfpack coach Tom O’Brien also sounds optimistic about the kicking game. Czajkowski didn’t miss a field goal from inside 40 yards during the spring.
Punter Bradley Pierson returns after averaging 37.2 yards per kick last season. Both have looked good in the first few practices, though they will be tested more this week as N.C. State begins working out in full pads.
“We kicked field goals [Sunday], and Josh kicked the ball fine,” O’Brien said. “Solid, high, long, true. So that’s positive. And Pierson’s punted the ball well most of the time. So I think they’re on track.”
• O’Brien also has been impressed with the early work of his five quarterbacks. Daniel Evans, Russell Wilson, Harrison Beck, Justin Burke and Mike Glennon are competing for the starting job. O’Brien said all five seem to understand what’s expected of them.
“We’re much more advanced at that position than we were [a year ago] from a knowledge standpoint, getting out of the huddle, getting everybody headed the right direction, getting the ball where it’s supposed to go,” O’Brien said. “Now it’s a matter of decision making and execution.”
• Senior Antoine Holmes, who moved from defensive end to defensive tackle last season, still is getting used to playing at a heavier weight. He said he played at 275 pounds last season but is up to 285.
"At first it was a load to pull, but I’m feeling better right now,” Holmes said. The biggest tactical adjustment at tackle is getting accustomed to the idea that extra blockers can come from different directions. At end, double teams usually came from only one side. “You’ve got to keep your head on a swivel [at tackle],” Holmes said.

Dude, anytime you want to get liquored up in the future and rail against State basketball in a football story's comment section (or vice-versa), go right ahead. Just makes the rest of your Heel brethren look that much more stupid.
Jerry Smith is one of yours

Mon, 08/04/2008 - 17:13 — gvillegatrwake up and realize you are not going to get enough great players needed to compete with UNC and DUIke every single game. its never going to happen. sure you might get one player from time to time, but not enough consistently. i'm not syaing give up, but please quit calling for Lowe's head. you and the rest of the fans who think NCSU will ever compete again are delirious and you will be calling for every coaches head. you're simply not playing on a level field in bball. just hope every few years the stars align and you guys are competitive.
now football is a different matter and it is anyones conference to win at this moment. put your passion into football and you will prolly feel better in the long run!
having permanently locked
Wed, 08/06/2008 - 14:58 — NCSUmugatu (not verified)having permanently locked down the top spot in bball its nice to hear you're atleast giving State (and the rest of the acc) a chance against you in football
Never compete again?
Tue, 08/05/2008 - 12:48 — JPDOhioI think it is a stretch to say the Pack will never compete with Duke and UNC again. As long as Roy and Coach K are still around, that is probably a fair statement. But we have seen glimpses in the past of what happens when less than stellar coaches take over those programs, and the results aren't always pretty. Both programs will be at risk when their current coaches decide to retire.
However, I do agree whole-heartedly that Sid needs to be given time. His most recent commitments look good, at least on paper. Only time will tell if they all pan out, but that is the point. It is way to early to be deciding his fate. Patience, Pack fans.
Basketball Comment
Mon, 08/04/2008 - 16:39 — Pack Fan (not verified)In regards to the comment from Jerry Smith on NC State's basketball program...
I think you're misinformed. NC State sent coaches to Argentina to watch Ryan Kelly play. We wanted him bad. Just didn't work out. Not because of lack of effort.
Sid is putting together very solid 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes.
I'm very excited about the direction of our programs.
^ NC State recruited the
Mon, 08/04/2008 - 15:49 — Anonymous (not verified)^ NC State recruited the heck out of Kelly. John Wall is from NC and he is being recruited heavily. Howell and Brown are both Top 50 players - who cares that they are not from NC.
CJ Leslie, 2010 recruit, is from NC. Ryan Harrow, 2010 recruit is also from NC but recently moved to Georgia.
Lowe
Mon, 08/04/2008 - 14:38 — Chris Adams (not verified)Coach Lowe must have told you that personally about Howell, since he is not allowed to comment publicly about recruits until they are signed. Howell has only verbally committed at this point. And, if you were knowledgable about recruiting you would realize that Lowe and staff are doing a great job of recruiting the 2009 class.
what are you talking about jerrysmith
Mon, 08/04/2008 - 14:06 — Anonymous (not verified)Lowe and company were the first on Ryan Kelly before any other big program even acknowledge the big white hype from Ravenscroft. NC State was one of the first, if not the first, Division 1 program to give Ryan a scholarship. Dont make stupid ASSumptions jerrysmith.
football & basketball
Mon, 08/04/2008 - 13:26 — jerrysmithI like what I hear about the progress football is making at NC State but I am disapointed at their basketball recruitment. Lowe said Howell will make you forget Hickson of last year. Well it wouldn't take much to forget him and Howell is not going to be the answer. He just will not recruit good North Carolina basketball players, only the so so players. I'm talking about Rhyn Kelly whom they didn't seem to be interested in at all because he is a good tall white player. That's the impression I get. Enough said and I don't think Lowe is the coach needed at State.
Lowe doesn't like white
Mon, 08/04/2008 - 14:10 — Anonymous (not verified)Lowe doesn't like white people? Or tall players?
